Cross Cut From Flooring Sample
Phantom Scroller and 5 others reacted to BadBob for a topic
One of my neighbors threw out a large pile of 2x2 foot flooring samples. I took some home to try. The vinyl samples were horrible to cut. The problem was with the glued-on padding. The glue was soft and gooey and mixed in with sawdust, and smeared all over the edges. However, some laminated (plywood) hardwood samples were lightly glued onto a 1/4-inch hardboard backing. I cut this cross from one of the panels. The backing came off while I was cutting, and I used tape to keep it together. I wound up with two crosses: one plywood and one hardboard. You can see the seams where I glued the tongue and groove panels together. After gluing, I put the cross on a nonstick surface and put two five-pound weights on top to hold it together and flat. I used two Pegas #3 MGT blades to cut this. It cuts much as I would expect from baltic birch plywood. The photo is not very good. I had never photographed a cross before.6 points -

Hybrid scrolling
new2woodwrk and 3 others reacted to Millwab for a topic
I was cutting some military plaques to use for scrolling examples for an upcoming demonstration I’ll be doing. Originally cut the veining but wasn’t particularly happy with the way it turned out so I decided to experiment with lasering the veining/inside details and scroll the rest. I liked the results enough to show one of each. The scrolling purist would frown on this I’m sure, but I’m thinking the non-scroller might think it shows up better. Picture shows the difference. Plaque on the left is cut, one on the right is the hybrid.4 points -
55th Anniversary Wall Plaque
GusGustin and 3 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
55th Anniversary wall plaque. A Sue Mey pattern modified for the 55th. I used 1/4" Walnut plywood approximately 10" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1R MGT blades. The finish is one coat spray Shellac and two coats MinWax spray Lacquer Clear Gloss with sanding between coats. Comments welcome.4 points -

I agree with @barb.j.enders . If you really want to use a sticker please make it removable. So the buyer can easily remove it if they don't like it. I don't care for the blank back on the ornament. I would have engraved both sides with the same or another photo. The back of the car comes to mind.3 points -

Kev, I think I would have preferred the hand signing. I think the sticker makes it look "cheap". Not really the word I am looking for but not sure what works better. It just looks "wrong".3 points -
I had an idea for a Christmas pattern that I didn't get to do last year. I don't know what will happen tomorrow, let alone what will happen in six months, so I made it now. It is simple Christmas tree puzzle which consists of 9 smaller ones. Also you can use them as separate Christmas ornaments or home decoration (pattern includes variant with loop for hanging) Video of making project Christmas treee puzzle pattern2 points

Peacock for my wife
TexasDIY reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I ran across this pattern on a European scroll saw page and asked where I could buy the pattern. I was drawn into it at first sight. I never received an answer but posted that I was looking for it. Luckily someone responded and I was able to get the pattern. It was in a format that I have never seen and I was unable to use it. I have a good friend who was able to change it into a format that I could use. After I got it printed, I decided I was not skilled enough to make it. I was kidded a lot about when i was going to make the project. So I finally decided I would at least give it a try. This is the end results and fortunately for me, my wife really liked it and it is now hanging on our front room wall. Each feather has 50 holes and there are about 36 feathers in the project. That meany each feather was going to take in the neighborhood of an hour to cut. Well long story shortened, I finally got through the project. I was not happy with the painting on the body of the bird, but other than that, I am happy with the overall results. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
ADDING COLOR TO SCROLLING
angela2 reacted to john nelson for a topic
I hope I am doing this right......I am computer challenged. For the past few years I have been developing a method of adding details and color to scroll-saw projects. The method is not new as Fisher-Price Toy Company used this method to add detail and color to their toys in the 40"s and 50"s before plastic. I would like to find 5 or 6 scrollers (of any level) that would interested in trying this method and tell us your opinion. I would like to know, what you think, if you liked the process and the results or not, if you would do other projects using this method and if you had any suggestions or ideas how to improve it. If you are interested, I would be happy to send the first 5 or 6 scrollers free, full size patterns, required art work and instructions to complete one add color to scrolling project. Just choose one of the project below and send me your mailing address. You are not under any obligation what so ever. If you do try it, please let us all know what you think. Thank you. barb.j.enders reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
Here's the thing for me... First I agree with the "not a fan of the sticker" but I think for a different reason Reputation is everything IMO, and you do some incredible work. Putting a sticker on it, "cheapens" it in my eyes and is beneath the quality and reputation you have built. Hope that didn't offend1 point -
Yeah, when I first started doing laser work I thought the same thing.. I've tried to engrave both sides but many times end up ruining it because it don't take hardly any movement to get it off center then the back side looks worst because it's not engraved in the correct spot. I now have a method / template or jig that might make that process go better.. the issue is every photo crops differently and isn't always the same size.. so the jig would need to be made for each photo engrave.. I haven't found any super easy way to line everything up perfectly to do both sides yet, still working / thinking on that.. I might figure it out at some point.1 point

Thank you, I sort of felt the same way but only after I clear coated it, LOL.. actually I did try to peel it back off once i put it on but it was trying to rip and not come off so I stuck it back down and cleared over it.1 point

Hybrid scrolling
scrollingforsanity reacted to BadBob for a topic
I have long thought that a laser could be used for engraving a pattern on wood for cutting with a scroll saw. You just gave me yet another reason to want a laser.1 point -
I did a lot of reading posts on cutting flooring. Some flooring will eat blades, but the experiences were mixed. I decided that I would have to try it and see how it worked. If it cost me a few blades to figure this out, so be it.1 point

I see the plaque on the left does not have all the veining completed. The hybrid looks nice but the way I see it if part of the project is laser cut why not the whole plaque? JMHO1 point -

Hybrid scrolling

But it brings up the question; did you actually scroll the words "Semper Fidelis" in the one on the left? This was done by hand, but with a wood burner. Even my 3/0 blades would have been too big for this.1 point -
Hybrid scrolling
scrollingforsanity reacted to TAIrving for a topic
Very nice cutting Bruce. And the hybrid one is very nice also. I am a purist and appreciate the effort and attention to detail required to do a project like this on the scroll saw. When I see something like this I look for the burn marks that are a tell for lasering. They are apparent in the hybrid one on the right, and in fact make the veining stand out better. For that reason, the hybrid one actually looks better. But it brings up the question; did you actually scroll the words "Semper Fidelis" in the one on the left? It looks like it has the laser burn tell. And I am most impressed if you did that small, fine cutting on the scroll saw. Either way, great job!1 point -

Peacock for my wife
danny reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I was rather taken with the pattern when I saw it the first time. I knew I needed to cut it and when I showed it to my wife, she really liked it also. Because of all the wonderful things she has done for me in the over 60 years of our married life, how could I not take the effort and see if I could possibly make it for her? Glad you like it too Dick heppnerguy1 point -

I wouldn't even want to attempt stack cutting this... mess up one, mess up too many.....I rarely stack cut, mainly because I enjoy my hobby and I really do not enjoy cutting ones for no reason than to save time should I decide I might sell one. For me, a long time ago I did a couple of public sales with a booth and a lot of items i cut in hopes to sell them. What I discovered was, for me, cutting in hopes to sell an item, was turning what I enjoyed and had fun doing and I found out it when from a fun hobby to 'work'. Not what I was after in my hobby. I get a lot of pleasure when someone sees something I made and wants to buy one of them from me. Then I am making something because it sold itself and the pleasure of making it, is now the result of a fun hobby, not built on hope to sell.. That is just me and I just did not find it pleasurable to try and make it as an extra income, even though I probably could use the money. Maybe that does not make much sense to you or a lot of other people, but it works for me. Thanks for the question and for taking the time to read my (crazy) answer Dick heppnerguy1 point -

I am like you in that all the work for hopes of selling isn't really my thing. I have another event in November, which is a 2 day event. Did it last year as well and it was quite successful. I will probably just continue as I am - post something on my fb page for friends & family to see. Sold a fair bit that way.1 point -
Thanks Jim. When I'm cutting something with smooth, straight-line cuts, I typically use Pegas MGT which is good for removing fuzzies. On this piece, and most of those I cut using large, difficult patterns, I use Pegas spirals. My saw only has a 16-inch throat so you can imagine how difficult it would be spinning a piece such as this one on that small saw. Especially with the number of cuts it has. Occasionally I will put on a straight blade to make a cut I feel is critical to have a sharp angle. By the way, I started the Western Stagecoach but had to put it aside for some commission work.1 point
