  1. I had an idea for a Christmas pattern that I didn't get to do last year. I don't know what will happen tomorrow, let alone what will happen in six months, so I made it now. It is simple Christmas tree puzzle which consists of 9 smaller ones. Also you can use them as separate Christmas ornaments or home decoration (pattern includes variant with loop for hanging) Video of making project Christmas treee puzzle pattern

  2. Not even close to the same. I had one of those ball from HF. Didn't use it long. Didn't care for it a bit. The one I use has sandpaper and scotch bright pad and sandpaper. They come in 60, 100 and 150 grit. This is my assortment currently.

  3. I ran across this pattern on a European scroll saw page and asked where I could buy the pattern. I was drawn into it at first sight. I never received an answer but posted that I was looking for it. Luckily someone responded and I was able to get the pattern. It was in a format that I have never seen and I was unable to use it. I have a good friend who was able to change it into a format that I could use. After I got it printed, I decided I was not skilled enough to make it. I was kidded a lot about when i was going to make the project. So I finally decided I would at least give it a try. This is the end results and fortunately for me, my wife really liked it and it is now hanging on our front room wall. Each feather has 50 holes and there are about 36 feathers in the project. That meany each feather was going to take in the neighborhood of an hour to cut. Well long story shortened, I finally got through the project. I was not happy with the painting on the body of the bird, but other than that, I am happy with the overall results. Dick heppnerguy

  5. One of my neighbors threw out a large pile of 2x2 foot flooring samples. I took some home to try. The vinyl samples were horrible to cut. The problem was with the glued-on padding. The glue was soft and gooey and mixed in with sawdust, and smeared all over the edges. However, some laminated (plywood) hardwood samples were lightly glued onto a 1/4-inch hardboard backing. I cut this cross from one of the panels. The backing came off while I was cutting, and I used tape to keep it together. I wound up with two crosses: one plywood and one hardboard. You can see the seams where I glued the tongue and groove panels together. After gluing, I put the cross on a nonstick surface and put two five-pound weights on top to hold it together and flat. I used two Pegas #3 MGT blades to cut this. It cuts much as I would expect from baltic birch plywood. The photo is not very good. I had never photographed a cross before.

    Miter saw ?

I have been checking around, I like the Ridgid 7 1/4 blade battery miter saw, it’s lite, 24 lbs, and would have a lifetime warranty, batteries included in warranty, thx for all your help will let you know what I end up with, RJ

  8. I don't use the brush very much either. Now and then when there are fuzzies in veining left by a spiral blade it comes in handy.

  9. This is the second of Americana 12 by Jim Blume. This is pretty much the same as the first cut, Oak ply stained natural, black backer, except the truck was tinted with Minwax Expresso stain rather than watercolor paint. Again, the frame is actual framing material with gray wash and a little natural stain to darken it up just a touch.

  10. That is a good idea. From what I see the Pegas blades are 931/2" long, same size as my Grizzly band saw. I think I'll give them a try and see how it works after I order the stabilizer.

  11. I also have pretty much the same, The supported flap disks, I find are not supple enough for my type of work and the brush type, I have and use them very ocasionally. I dont think they do anything that the Mac Mop and sanding mops can't do better. JMHO

    Sailing Ship

I've always wanted to scroll a sailing ship but never could find a pattern I liked. Searched the web and found a drawing and modified it to be scrolled. All the lines are double cut. The rigging and some of the sails and ship plank were a little complicated. The stem is also a peninsular and I was glad when I finally glued it down to the backer. The bridges were very small but luckily I didn't have any break throughs.

    Hi Jack!

Bonjour tout le monde, I'm satisfied (a little) of this first experience for me. I cut this board from a photograph. I made the pattern with an application. I think redo projects like that time to time. You can tell if it's bad Eric

  17. I have a good friend that I met shortly after we moved to Southern Arizona. He has purchased several of my wood projects and he had his 82nd birthday this week. One time while in my shop, he saw a plaque I had made for myself and mentioned how much he liked it. so for his birthday, I made one for him too. He had it hanging on his wall the same day he received it. If you are old enough you may remember these greyhound scenicruisers. Dick heppnerguy

    Miter saw ?

Citing smaller things on any saw can be hazardous. I saw an item by FastCap called the 10 Million Dollar Stick. It looks like a great safety tool for a miter saw. Cutting small pieces on the miter saw is dangerous as your fingers are close and a piece can be thrown at you.

  19. Kevin, @kmmcrafts I bought a small, inexpensive laser (about $200) just to do engraving on the back of my projects. As a bonus, I can make my logo larger or smaller to fit the piece I am engraving. This would not tie up your expensive laser from doing other work. Thurman

    Miter saw ?

For me, the weight isn't a problem. The miter saw's shape makes it very awkward to lift and carry. My primary cross-cutting watch is a 12-inch sliding compound miter saw by Hitachi. It is a bear to move and lives in the middle of my workbench. I do all of my cross-cutting and even ripping smaller pieces. I can cut small (less than 1-inch) pieces using proper clamping and a zero clearance insert. I originally bought this saw because I had a large project where I had to cut a lot of 4x4s. I have never regretted buying such a large saw. Ted Baldwin: Cutting Small Things Safely (00h:50m) https://youtu.be/knotpj60bsk

    Miter saw ?

I bought a Cobalt 10" compound and put a diablo blade on it - I am very pleased with it and since I don't use it nearly as much as when I first bought it, it is still a good deal for me. And it very inexpensive and accurate to boot

  25. I ended up ordering the Mac Mop. The Flap Wheel thing Dave mentioned really reminds me of the same thing as those sanding balls from HF.. they do last a long time however for what I use them for they aren't as aggressive as I'd like so that is my reasoning to try the Mac Mop.. will see how I like that I suppose. Thinking when I order again I might try buying the refill kits as Ray mentioned. The sanding ball from HF comes on a mandrel that comes apart so I'll just use a old one and instead of tossing it into my metal recycle bin I'll take it apart and try the refill onto the mandrel. Thanks for all the info everyone

    Father's Day

Happy Father's day to all the dads in our group. I got the inspiration for these pieces while browsing some website and just kinda winged it, so I do not have a pattern source. (P.s. I know there should not be a apostrophe in "dads"....but I had already cut it before I realized I'm an idiot....lol)

Also, you will need to buy a GOOD blade. It makes a huge difference in quality of cut.

  28. On my second look I see the veining is cut but doesn't show well in your picture. The drilled hole is larger than the veining. I quite often use a spiral blade to enhance the veining and allow it to show up better.

  32. Just wanted to say thank you all for your honest opinions on this idea I had brainstormed, I normally don't add a signature of any kind to ornaments.. they normally get put into small jewelry gift boxes with a business card inside the box. Sometimes I use the stickers to sort of seal the box lid onto the box. I ended up sanding off the clear and sticker and re-coating the clear on this project. Sometimes I brainstorm ideas thinking they might be easier or quicker and in the end I really need to just keep doing what I do. Thank you all for talking me out of doing any more of these like this, sometimes I need outside opinions to keep me on track with quality products.

I agree. Whom ever took the photo was really talented in capturing a moment. And that brings us up to you and your scroll project from the photo. The person talented enough to also capture that moment in a pattern and then cut it so that it can be seen by many more, cut into wood, is amazing as well. I am not sure who made the pattern and cut this, but it turned out amazing as your work always continues to be. Dick heppnerguy

    Leopard

Who knows, if you continue to cut the leopards, you just might be able to do a nice job with them. Of course, I am just being silly as this is your usual quality work, which of course means, Top notch. I always look forward to seeing what you have cut next, every time I see you have posted something. I know I will never reach your ability and skill level but you inspire me to always try to do better with each new project I take on. Thanks for the inspiration from everyone of your posts. You are indeed a great scroller. Dick heppnerguy

  36. I have one on a Shopsmith bandsaw. It works, but you can't set it up according to Cater's instructions. Shopsmith bandsaws do not work the same way as most other bandsaws. It takes some practice, and you will not get smooth cuts as a scroll saw. It is not going to turn your bandsaw into a Pegas scrolling bandsaw. With the Carter Stabilizer, you can cut much tighter turns with less risk of damaging your blade. The Carter Stabilizer is for use with narrow blades only. If you resaw, you must change the guides to use your resaw blade or have a second bandsaw. I have two bandsaws. I cut these with it.

    Hybrid scrolling

Both are nicely cut and the lettering on the "Semper Fidelis" is much neater "cleaner" than the one done with the wood burner. (Understand that isn't a snub on you. It's obvious a computer and laser will be much more precise.) I have nothing against using a laser... and maybe one day I'll have one for myself. Concerning the veining, when I first started scrolling I realized cutting veins with the blade I was using to cut the project often left the veins quite small and sometimes hard to see. I started cutting veins with a spiral blade, usually a #2/0, and they were large enough to see the detail the veining projected.
