  1. I just received a newly published puzzle book. It is titled, 20 MINUTE SCROLL SAW PUZZLES by Jaeheon Yun and published by Fox Chapel. Jaeheon is from South Korea. If you make puzzles and toys, I think you will really like this book. The puzzles are unique, different, they are simple, sweet and stackable. The puzzle designs are amazing and, the thing I really like about this book is these puzzles will make you smile. (How many woodworking books out there make you smile? ) Have a great day, JAN

Had to take a week off work (use it or lose it...apparently I don't take enough vacation time), so I finally got this one finished up. 3/8 bb ply, used a number of Pegas #1mg blades (maybe some 0/2's as well?). Minwax "Natural" for the eagle, "Honey" for backer and frame. Not sure why, but I didn't stack-cut this one, so just the one version. Frame is scrap from Lowes....your hardware store may vary, but Lowes won't sell any scrap or cut ends of lumber, they just give them away (even if someone needs a 7" piece off the end of a 2x4x6, they can't sell the remaining 2x4x5). I have discovered that their fence slats come on a pallet, and in between various layers of slats, there are these nasty, greenish, ratty-looking little strips about 2" wide and maybe 1/2" thick. Sanded up, they make EXCELLENT frame materials. Rough, scarred up, live-edge, great grain patterns. Usually the greenish tint is only on the surface, so sanding brings out some nice wood. They don't tend to be straight, though, but to me that makes for some nifty rustic frames.

    Another one done!

I took the pattern from the last one and shrunk it down so I could use one of the short candles that came in the set. This one is 4 inches but I have a 2 & 3 also. Not sure yet which one will look better. Gotta wait for dark.

  6. Sounds like you're going to have to buy a welder and start welding two blade together to get the length blade you need.. Okay so seriously here is what you need to do. First take a tape measure and with the upper arm in the down as low as it'll go position measure the distance between the arm and the table top at the back of the saw and then at the front of the saw.. They're supposed to be parallel so you need to turn the knob at the back of the saw and bring that upper arm down until it's the same distance and both ends of the arm. This is a common issue with these as they get older as the threads get worn in the threaded shaft and in the threaded block that it threads into. My saw started doing this and then got real bad.. just cutting for one small cutout the blade tension would change during the cut and I'd have to adjust it so I took the saw apart and added blue colored loc-tite to the threads and I haven't had any issues since then. A lot of folks just wrap a rubber band around it in some way to hold the thing enough. There is a few topics out there on this issue.. one of which I did on taking it apart and doing the loc-tite fix and then there are some on how to wrap the rubber band around it to hold it from moving.

  8. Three Miniature Birdhouse Ornaments finished. The patterns by Diana Thompson. The birdhouses are Ash, and the first 3 little birds are Purpleheart and the fourth one is Eastern Red Cedar. Cut on the Pegas scroll saw using Pegas #6 Skip blades. The finish is dipped in diluted Shellac. Comments welcome.

    Another one done!

Danny, I've got 3 patterns and chose this one to try out. I made the first one full size, the second one is the shortest and the 3rd one will be mid-size. My wife wanted a full set to sit on our kitchen counter. Anyway, to my point. I'm going to make them in sets of 3 and see what the market will bear. Knowing what folks are willing to pay for things that are home-made does give me the incentive to try more. It's coming to mind that people are starting to want quality instead of the Chinese crap that is everywhere and are will to pay for it. So, with that in mind, I'm going to start these out at $149.95 for a set including the battery operated candles. Plus shipping of course. I'm not going to use Etsy either. Why give them a share of the profits? Just my 2 cents.

  10. Thanks for sharing about Jaeheon’s new book published by Fox Chapel. I know many here are familiar with Jaehon as he has been a participating member here in the village for a a few years now. He has shared several of his fun puzzles here in the past. @namunolie Is his user name. I had seen where Fox Chapel had published him in the magazine, glad he is also publishing a book of his puzzles. Congratulations Jaehon on both. He also has an Etsy shop where he sells patterns as well. https://www.etsy.com/shop/Namunolie

  11. I'm not 100% familiar with the Excelsior brand, but does it have the knob on the top/back like most of today's saws? Adjusting that knob should change the distance between the blade clamps for you.

    Sailing Ship

I've always wanted to scroll a sailing ship but never could find a pattern I liked. Searched the web and found a drawing and modified it to be scrolled. All the lines are double cut. The rigging and some of the sails and ship plank were a little complicated. The stem is also a peninsular and I was glad when I finally glued it down to the backer. The bridges were very small but luckily I didn't have any break throughs.

  16. I always finish all my projects including ornaments. I always use hardwoods for my ornaments. My finish schedule starts with soaking in a 50/50 mixture of mineral spirits and linseed oil. The linseed oil brings out the color and grain of the woods and the mineral spirits thins the oil so it flows easily around the project and allows the oil to dry within 24 hours. Then I topcoat with spray semi gloss lacquer. After the lacquer dries, if there are any dust nibs on the finish, I sand them off with a piece of brown paper bag. It’s like using 2000 grit sandpaper without scratching the finish. It’s a little more work but it’s worth the outcome. I sell hundreds of ornaments a year!

    Finishing Ornaments

I like a gloss finish on mine. I want the ornament to reflect the tree lights. For special ornaments, family, I will use a glitter paint before the gloss finish.

Different stores have different policies, I guess...I've had a lumber guy tell me he needed to take them up front and initial them so everyone knew I wasn't stealing them (used a Sharpie, sanded off easily enough), and another guy on another trip kinda chuckled and said "you want to help take out our trash? Pull your truck up, how many ya need?" Taken some busted pallets of their hands that way, too.

  20. That was it, exactly!!! Many thanks folks, many thanks indeed. I think I was grabbing the knob when I occasionally had to move the saw around, not remembering what it did, Again, many thanks.

  22. I cant find any wood slabs in my area that aren't cracked or broken, so I made my own out of 1/2 plywood and a torch. I needed something quick and easy I could sell inexpensively at craft shows. I think they turned out okay. All 4 are Sue Mey patterns

  23. Just finished this .. it took a few days .. but - only because I am soooo NOT a painter. I had to figure out how to make it look like a SUNSET or SUNRISE (depending on which coast you're on) .. I looked at all sorts of pictures - my favorite being one with these clouds in it and all - but - then figured ... I'm having enough trouble just figuring out how to make a sky, what the heck am I thinking wanting to try to make a freaken CLOUD ???? So .. no clouds. Also - looked for the GIBSON headstock font. Only one guy offers it and wants $30 bucks to down load it. So - I took a picture of the headstock of one of my Gibsons - Let's see .. G I B S O N .. G U S T I N .. I only needed I only needed to make a U and a T .. the rest was there. Came out pretty cool. It's 3/16" acrylic - with a 5/8" baltic birch backer .. Kelly Moore paint on the bottom and top .. then .. acrylic paints to light up the sky. The only thing about this that I don't like - You can see EVERYWHERE I put glue .. I tried just the edges on the SUN .. in spots. You can see 'em. Then on the reflection - I was going to coat the entire back - but - it was drying way to fast to spread it around .. Any and all ideas .. would be welcome on this .. I'm going to cut another one .. with DIFFERENT TREES .. but - I have to go and draw it first. A friend of mine made this off a picture he found with no rights or anything on google - made from metal. So I made the pattern from that .. Now I think I'll try to draw a mountain scene with pines or redwoods .. or maybe just another one with Sycamores or something .. we'll see .. where I go on the next one .. but .. first .. H BOTAS sent me a plaque to cut for my grandson .. who just joined the navy .. so .. that's next up on the saw. One pic is before gluing and before the sunset/sunrise painting ..

  27. I bought some nice parchment type paper and made up some stationary with my name and added "Esq" to my name. It gives the impression that I'm an attorney. When I write a letter, it seems to be taken seriously. Luckily I don't have many opportunities to use them.

  28. It seems that a lot of businesses are always willing to help when we are in the market for a machine. However, once the purchase is made and they have our money and something goes wrong with the machine, we are on our own. Thank you for sharing and I am sorry about your experience. I thought I was the only one that was a victim of poor customer service, LOL. I am very sensitive about customer service because I have been burned a few times. Reading the forums and doing research have helped me to weed out some poor customer service businesses, but then again...

  46. My dog smiles a lot.......I don't have to feed him, I don't have to take him for a walk and I do not have to follow him around with a pooper-scooper. This is another example of ADDING COLOR TO SCROLLING. The only painting required was to paint the edges yellow. Art work was simply glued on. The finished results LOOKS like it was painted.
