    H. Botas eagle

Had to take a week off work (use it or lose it...apparently I don't take enough vacation time), so I finally got this one finished up. 3/8 bb ply, used a number of Pegas #1mg blades (maybe some 0/2's as well?). Minwax "Natural" for the eagle, "Honey" for backer and frame. Not sure why, but I didn't stack-cut this one, so just the one version. Frame is scrap from Lowes....your hardware store may vary, but Lowes won't sell any scrap or cut ends of lumber, they just give them away (even if someone needs a 7" piece off the end of a 2x4x6, they can't sell the remaining 2x4x5). I have discovered that their fence slats come on a pallet, and in between various layers of slats, there are these nasty, greenish, ratty-looking little strips about 2" wide and maybe 1/2" thick. Sanded up, they make EXCELLENT frame materials. Rough, scarred up, live-edge, great grain patterns. Usually the greenish tint is only on the surface, so sanding brings out some nice wood. They don't tend to be straight, though, but to me that makes for some nifty rustic frames.

  5. I always finish all my projects including ornaments. I always use hardwoods for my ornaments. My finish schedule starts with soaking in a 50/50 mixture of mineral spirits and linseed oil. The linseed oil brings out the color and grain of the woods and the mineral spirits thins the oil so it flows easily around the project and allows the oil to dry within 24 hours. Then I topcoat with spray semi gloss lacquer. After the lacquer dries, if there are any dust nibs on the finish, I sand them off with a piece of brown paper bag. It’s like using 2000 grit sandpaper without scratching the finish. It’s a little more work but it’s worth the outcome. I sell hundreds of ornaments a year!

  9. I like a gloss finish on mine. I want the ornament to reflect the tree lights. For special ornaments, family, I will use a glitter paint before the gloss finish.

    Miter saw ?

Ok I got it narrowed down to 2 different saws, Ridgid 7 1/4 inch double bevel, cordless 24 lbs and craftsman 7 1/4 inch single bevel cordless 21.5 lbs, both saw features are about the same except for the double bevel on the Ridgid saw. Any opinions of which one would be appreciated, Thx RJ

  21. Really depends on the ornament design and how I made it, LOL.. I use both Danish oil and or the water base poly.. I like lacquer too as it dries very fast.. But I do have issues with the strong smell from lacquer so I don't use that very often.. If I need fast dry and having to spray inside the shop then it's water base poly. If it's a nice day and I can take my spraying outside then it's lacquer. LOL

Different stores have different policies, I guess...I've had a lumber guy tell me he needed to take them up front and initial them so everyone knew I wasn't stealing them (used a Sharpie, sanded off easily enough), and another guy on another trip kinda chuckled and said "you want to help take out our trash? Pull your truck up, how many ya need?" Taken some busted pallets of their hands that way, too.

  36. Sounds like you're going to have to buy a welder and start welding two blade together to get the length blade you need.. Okay so seriously here is what you need to do. First take a tape measure and with the upper arm in the down as low as it'll go position measure the distance between the arm and the table top at the back of the saw and then at the front of the saw.. They're supposed to be parallel so you need to turn the knob at the back of the saw and bring that upper arm down until it's the same distance and both ends of the arm. This is a common issue with these as they get older as the threads get worn in the threaded shaft and in the threaded block that it threads into. My saw started doing this and then got real bad.. just cutting for one small cutout the blade tension would change during the cut and I'd have to adjust it so I took the saw apart and added blue colored loc-tite to the threads and I haven't had any issues since then. A lot of folks just wrap a rubber band around it in some way to hold the thing enough. There is a few topics out there on this issue.. one of which I did on taking it apart and doing the loc-tite fix and then there are some on how to wrap the rubber band around it to hold it from moving.

Coming out of the pandemic many have fallen into Human Inertia. I think many of us suffer from it in various degrees. I find myself in that mold as well. For me the solution has been set a small goals. "A body at rest tends to say at rest." If I change that on a small level by setting small goals and accept the smallest improvement as a victory I am able do gain momentum. For me it is the process of seeing myself as active and then take that first step. Whether from discouragement or from depression - forcing myself to take on a small step and then building on that works wonders for me. God bless you, Kevin.
