Converted a H Donovan illustration to a 11’ x 17” scroll saw pattern. Cut panel is 5/32” solid core Maple mounted on a hand painted ¼” thk BB Ply backer. Hand painting done using Artist Acrylic Paints. Panel cutting done using Pegas #0 spiral blades. Assembled panel is protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. Frame is my typical 1 ¾” wide Poplar stained with Minwax Fruitwood and finished with multiple coats of Minwax Clear Gloss Wipe-on Poly. Tried the Fruitwood stain, a new color for me. I like the way it looks for a light color frame on some nice clear pieces of Poplar that I used. As always, comments and critiques welcome and appreciated.6 points

Fridge Magnets
danny and 5 others reacted to Jim McDonald for a topic
Depends on the size of the wood and the cutting. When I make my state quarter magnets, I use 3/8" hardwood and since the quarter is 15/16", I always make the area where I place the magnet at leas th 1.5" to give me room to seat the quarter. On all but a few states. I am sinking a 1/4" rare earth magnet (from Lee Valley) into the back. I secure the magnet with a small pool of CA glue and it holds well. Some skinny states that become large tring to get the 1.5" require two magnets. I used to mix 5 minute epoxy, but have found CA works just as well.6 points -
Some years ago I made frig. magnets out of the scraps of these tree ornaments. They sold way better than the actual ornaments did, LOL in fact I still have a lot of the tree ornaments but not a single magnet. I used those little magnets Bob talked about. Broke a couple of them just trying to get the magnet off the cookie sheet I displayed them on at the shows, LOL3 points

Neodymium magnets are by far the best. I would not be surprised if a 1/4-inch diameter neodymium magnet would hold a pound. I once hung a 15lb dumbbell from a neodymium magnet recovered from a hard drive. Avoid going too large, or you will have to pry them off. I have some refrigerator magnets that are 4-5 inches long and 3/4-inch thick poplar that are held in place with 3/16-inch neodymium magnets I bought from Harbor Freight.3 points

I'm 79 years old but still crave knowledge. I'm not in the business of selling what I make. I just want a way of personalizing my work with a signature that's readable. If that violates some code, tough!2 points

I've looked at this option from time to time. It is a good option but it is also a custom made item if you want it to include a signature, which I was looking for. The custom irons are not cheap. My other problem with the Iron is I like to date my work, so I would still have to use a burning pen to add the date, Have no idea what a small laser engraver cost is but it may not be too much more than a custom Iron, and it can be used for other supplemental details on a scroll piece. I have also entertained this idea but just have not done any research, so answers to rays question would be welcomed by me and others as well, I'm sure. Update Edit: I watched Steves Video and did some research. And yes, a small engraver is less expensive than a custom Branding Iron. KKmoon makes a small engraver that lists for around $113 that has great reviews but, unfortunately, it is so popular that it is Out Of Stock and there is no indication when if will be available. It appeared to be the perfect choice for my wants. So the next choice is the unit Steve reviewed, but no longer avaialble on Amazon. Howwver, I did find it available at Walmart: KKmoon 7000mw Desktop Engraver Portable Engraving Carving Machine Mini Carver DIY Mark Printer for Metal Engraving and Deep Wood Engraving and Cutting $219.99 +tax. There are a ton of laser engraving products, but I kind of liked the fact this unit works with Inkscape. And the unit can be position on any size board. I want the engraver to predominently add my Logo,Signature and Date to the back of my panels. I've been using a burning pen in the past, but would like to have something more professional looking. So, I decided to jump in and order it. There is a 30 day return policy if I don't like it.2 points

ADDING COLOR TO SCROLLING
angela2 reacted to john nelson for a topic
I hope I am doing this right......I am computer challenged. For the past few years I have been developing a method of adding details and color to scroll-saw projects. The method is not new as Fisher-Price Toy Company used this method to add detail and color to their toys in the 40"s and 50"s before plastic. I would like to find 5 or 6 scrollers (of any level) that would interested in trying this method and tell us your opinion. I would like to know, what you think, if you liked the process and the results or not, if you would do other projects using this method and if you had any suggestions or ideas how to improve it. If you are interested, I would be happy to send the first 5 or 6 scrollers free, full size patterns, required art work and instructions to complete one add color to scrolling project. Just choose one of the project below and send me your mailing address. You are not under any obligation what so ever. If you do try it, please let us all know what you think. Thank you. My Daughter is heading to college in a couple of months, so I figured I'd make her some fridge magnets for her apartment. My question is what kind of magnet would be best for that application? And would epoxy be enough to attach them? Chris1 point

Outstanding!!! I'm always impressed with your work, Frank.1 point

Another outstanding work of art. Your color choices always impress me-I always have trouble using colors that compliment each other-wife says I am color blind but I argue I just see colors differently! Did you use a pre stain before staining your frame-it looks really good with no blotchiness, I tend to have trouble with that.1 point

I have a Neje - it works very well and is very easy to use Tips: 1. Mount your Neje to a board 2. Get yourself a grid mat and mount it below the neje - much easier to align engravings that way 3. Use painters tape to hold the item when lasering so it doesn't move. Also good if you have to double laser an item1 point -

Congrats on the new toy, I'll be interested in seeing what you think of it once you get your feet wet. I love my laser as it's just another tool to play around with in the shop and it does things my scroll saw or no other tool can do. Post your progress and updates in the Laser groups.. many die hard scroll sawers will slap your hand for getting a new tool like that and posting it here, LOL1 point

The higher the humidity, the slower mineral spirits evaporates. The drying time also depends on exactly what chemicals are in the mix. From reading about mineral spirits, I understood that it is a petroleum by-product, not a particular mix of chemicals. Other factors are the type of adhesive, paper, and material you are using. I have tried wiping it on with a damp towel, and this removed the pattern but left adhesive that had to be removed. One of the crosses in my photo is made of hardboard, and it was coated entirely with paper with a plastic film on top. I put it on a baking sheet and soaked it with mineral sprits to get it off.1 point

As an alternative (and maybe less costly?), a "branding iron" could be fashioned, small enough to attach to an electic wood burning pen. Heat it up - press against the back of the backer - and [Bob's your uncle"] done.1 point -

H. Botas eagle
frankorona reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Had to take a week off work (use it or lose it...apparently I don't take enough vacation time), so I finally got this one finished up. 3/8 bb ply, used a number of Pegas #1mg blades (maybe some 0/2's as well?). Minwax "Natural" for the eagle, "Honey" for backer and frame. Not sure why, but I didn't stack-cut this one, so just the one version. Frame is scrap from Lowes....your hardware store may vary, but Lowes won't sell any scrap or cut ends of lumber, they just give them away (even if someone needs a 7" piece off the end of a 2x4x6, they can't sell the remaining 2x4x5). I have discovered that their fence slats come on a pallet, and in between various layers of slats, there are these nasty, greenish, ratty-looking little strips about 2" wide and maybe 1/2" thick. Sanded up, they make EXCELLENT frame materials. Rough, scarred up, live-edge, great grain patterns. Usually the greenish tint is only on the surface, so sanding brings out some nice wood. They don't tend to be straight, though, but to me that makes for some nifty rustic frames.1 point -
Removing patterns attached with 3M77 spray adhesive, and in this case, because the material is flooring samples, there are labels on the back side that I want to remove.1 point

There are a lot of these style patterns judging from the number of photo I have been able to find. I spent a lot of time looking for them. I'm good at searching the internet, but I could not find the source. They may be on a non-English website, or the files have some decipherable name. (14egw^!ZyGx2PQArmPg.jpg, for example) Another possibility is that they are in a book out of print and did not sell a lot.1 point
