  1. I needed something for my office desk. So I made different-sized Post-It holders. That reminded me of bowl making on the scroll saw. So I made two shallow maple platters - can be used for jewelry or paperclips or...

Converted a H Donovan illustration to a 11’ x 17” scroll saw pattern. Cut panel is 5/32” solid core Maple mounted on a hand painted ¼” thk BB Ply backer. Hand painting done using Artist Acrylic Paints. Panel cutting done using Pegas #0 spiral blades. Assembled panel is protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. Frame is my typical 1 ¾” wide Poplar stained with Minwax Fruitwood and finished with multiple coats of Minwax Clear Gloss Wipe-on Poly. Tried the Fruitwood stain, a new color for me. I like the way it looks for a light color frame on some nice clear pieces of Poplar that I used. As always, comments and critiques welcome and appreciated.

I learning about colors. However, I try to use something to go by to select my colors. In this case the Illustration is in color and I basically did what the original artist did. In other cases I will look at photos of the real subjects. The hardest part is blending the paints to get the colors correct. Not alwasys easy. Yes I do use Minwax pre-stain wood conditioner before staining. It is supposed to reduce blochyness, but does not always work. That is one reason I keep trying new stain colors. This Fruitwood color worked well with the Poplar. First coat brushed on and then wiped off in about two minutes, let dry well. Second was a thin coat, applied uniformaly with a foam brush and allowed to dry throughly. No bloches or streaks. It was the first time I used a throw-a-way foam brush to apply stain...It may be the trick to uniform application. Gonna have to try with some of the dark stains that tennd to be blochy and streak.

  6. I joined here back in Nov-2018 with the "anticipation" of getting a scroll saw some day . . . . well, it took awhile, but, it finally came about. I'm 74, retired from the commercial dimensional advertising world. (carved and routed signs). I've always used the Roto-Zip, band saw, or other tools to make my projects. (wishing many times I had a good scroll saw). Well, I finally found an old DW-788 that the original owner said "it finally gave up the ghost" and advertised it on FaceBook. (Needing much repair). After a lot of research on the Ole Tube, I see that the major components that go bad aren't all that expensive so I picked the saw up for cheap (real cheap). So now, with a very modest investment, I think I have a pretty reliable machine. I'll cruise through the forums to see what's going on around here. Thanks for having me !! John

These are in my kitchen. The largest is 4.5-inches long and they are all 3/4-inch thick. There is one magnet on each one that are less than 1/4-inch diameter. Magnets are mounted in a hole flush with the surface and as close to the balance point as I could get.

  12. Did you do the delicate patterns on the platters using an engraver or a wood burning pen?

  13. thanks for the kind words - I'm not really a scroller "enthusiast", per se. I like to make dimensional signs and have always used the band saw, routers, or Roto-Zip to cut the elements out then do some handcarving to perk them up a bit. I'll put some of my projects in my folder later on. I work mostly with HDU (High Density Urethane). I very rarely clear-coat anything. (I'm a painter. That's what I do. I like to paint things).

I treasure my magnets from my late father. He had fun adding stuff around the house to make them more artsy.

Just bit of humor and critic... It is fresh cut in Florida, beautiful pedals, and leaves. Not China. The wood is from baltics I think, not China. So the only complaint is the name. Florida roses look great. The brain adds branches to the existing branches. So the artwork does not get too detailed trying add more branches. Elegant.

  21. All well and good , but it feels like a mom and pop business situation that goes aray - sometimes going fancy can hurt you more than help - we just use a sharpie on the back - with the copyright date and our names . I feel that when i get fancy i will loose myself trying to be fancy . Thou we know someone who makes alot of train whistles and has to do this ( he sells to stores as well ) That laser engraver is neat - but ill keep my money in the bank.
