    New idea

For a few years, I have made these state quarter magnets/ornaments and have sold a fair number and given away far more as thank yous. I needed something different for a big Indiana University basketball fan and came up with the idea of a framed outline on a fabric backer. True to form, I now own several different types of fabric and have patterns swirling for logos and other projects based on fabric backed upcycled frames. Frame size is 5 x 7.

    3D preview for patterns

As many of you already know I and my family left Ukraine and we are safe in Latvia now. We had to make this difficult decision and leave everything to be safe. I spent a lot of time to draw up many documents for different social and government services and finally it is time to return to pattern making. I used to make photos and video to show my customers how finished projects (mostly layered) look like. Unfortunately I cant do it now. But I started learning new for me program - LightWave 3D. Luckly I have experience with programs for 3D modeling and visualisation. I took my recent pattern (C198-fox) and tried to work with it. And here are first results. What do you think about such 3D previews? Fox pattern

Ben Stiller as Derek Zoolander. The man of many looks. Sorry, inside humor.

  6. I was excited to get the 20 Minute puzzle book. I originally wasn't going to buy it because if exchange and shipping rates. Found it at my local bookstore when I was there with my cousin. She purchased it for me as a thank you gift. She was staying for a family wedding. I got some cutting time today and knocked this one out. It did take me longer than 20 minutes to cut. And much longer to finish. This is 3/4"Aspen, cut using #5 mg blade and finished with Osmos finish (1 coat).

  8. I don't see that particular design but there is a whole bunch of these very similar to this design in the pattern section here on the village.. Steve Good also has a couple nice sets of military ornaments similar but has some decoration to it too.

    Zoolander

I completely understand. This was one strange movie. My attraction to it was both of my teenage kids at the time it came out liked it so it was a good way to share something with them I suppose. My favorite movie with Ben Stiller is The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty.

    My setup

I have the same saw.. that saw was the start of my journey. My father bought the saw brand new around 1988. That started his retirement hobby and he sold at crafts fairs around the area. He wore the saw out and rebuilt it two times.. then the third time he had a hard time finding parts so he upgraded to a Delta 40-540? I think was the model.. basically the same saw but variable speed. The old 2 speed sat under his work bench for several years. One day while visiting him I seen the saw sitting there and asked if I could borrow it and try to make something from it. He said you can have it, but it's pretty worn out.. works but needs new bearing sleeves and pins etc. I ended up using it as is for a few projects and then completely rebuilt it sourcing my parts online finding OEM parts from various sources. That was back in about 2006.. I still have the saw but don't really use it.. Good saws and the quickset blade clamps are the best.. too bad other manufactures can't come up with something like that..

What a great pattern. It looks so fierce. I love cutting the ones with a lot of fret holes. They are so were the effort and time as you have proven once more in your beautifully cut project here. I have it on my list but not sure if I will ever get to it. So many to cut. Dick heppnerguy

I am so glad we were able to get together about 7 years ago and become good friends. You keep up the great work. I have been enjoying your posts for some time now. Ornament Patterns?

I may have to customize a laser design into a scroll saw design.. seems to be a few of them for laser works but scroll sawing them would have some of the items in the scene as floaters and they'd fall out of the scene, LOL.. Just thought I'd ask as maybe someone already customized one.. or had something. I'll have to take a look both here and Steve's patterns.. Thanks for the searching efforts.

    Scrollsaw Bowl

I encourage you to give it a try. Toughest part of the cutting is following the line, while cutting on an angle. Saws with tilting heads make this task much easier. Sanding the glued up rings smooth can be a bit tedious, especially if you don't have anything other than a random orbit sander. Carole Rothman is the master of these things. Check out one of her books. Lots of great ideas for all skill levels and very good instructions on how to make them.

  41. Thank you! I use a free site called Cute Cutter. It takes a lot of experimenting to learn to use it but I’ve had fun with it. Some pictures work pretty well with it and some don’t at all. It usually takes me a few hours to do one so I just work on it while we’re watching a ballgame or something.

  43. Thanks John. The first one, from Good Will Hunting is my pattern I did from a photo. The one from Good Morning Vietnam however was from a black and white drawing I found on Pinterest or some site like that that only needed a little tweaking to make cuttable so I can't take any credit for that one. Charles is truly amazing. I cut his Gandalf the Gray and I can't imaging having the patience to do a pattern with that kind of detail. I usually do mine while watching television with the fam. I made this one of Ben Stiller from the movie Zoolander (One me and my son quote a lot) while watching several episodes of The Office tonight with my wife. Fun stuff.

  45. GAWD...this month is a tough one.......... "I guess, "put the kids in the car and go for a long ride in the country." (another simple "adding color to scrolling" project) Art work was done with felt tip pencils on a sheet of paper. A copy was made of the art work and glued to the wood. A couple of clear coats were added and it was done. It LOOKS like it was hand painted. ( both sides are different). JAN

  50. Another way to reproduce this project would be to just make a paper copy of the photo (full size) and glue it to the wood and cut out. Quick and no painting...no mess. Cute project. What is DecoArt® Snow Writer Paint? JAN
