  3. I was excited to get the 20 Minute puzzle book. I originally wasn't going to buy it because if exchange and shipping rates. Found it at my local bookstore when I was there with my cousin. She purchased it for me as a thank you gift. She was staying for a family wedding. I got some cutting time today and knocked this one out. It did take me longer than 20 minutes to cut. And much longer to finish. This is 3/4"Aspen, cut using #5 mg blade and finished with Osmos finish (1 coat).

  4. Combination of fretwork and intarsia. Oak plywood base, birch ply letters and 4-H symbols, and russian olive trunk. 30x24”. This year the local 4-H club is dedicating the award to it’s namesake. Next year, it will award one 4-Her by adding their name to a leaf. It was an honor to be asked to do this one as I was one of Bobbie’s 4-Hers years ago.

Hi everyone, just wanted to give a shout out too jr42 who did this pattern for me. He did a great job on it. It’s for a special friend of mine who’s turning 40. It measures around 8 x 10 cut on 1/4 inch BB ply, with a 1/8 backer. Thanks again jr.

    Iris Flowers

Adding to my flower themed Art pieces, I was able to convert this illustration of Iris Flowers Into a scroll saw pattern. Due to the proportions of the illustration my pattern became 9” wide by 19” tall. The cut panel is 5/32 solid core Maple Ply mounted on a Hand Painted ¼” x 12” x 22” BB Ply backer. Again, Artist Acrylics were used to do the coloring. Most of the cutting was done with a Pegas #1 MGT R Blade except for a few small cuts that were done with a #0 Spiral. The assembled panel was protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. Because I planned to paint the Frame, I used good grade of ¾” Pine, instead of my usual Poplar, that I ripped down to 1¾” widths. More cost effective. The well sanded frame was primed painted and then finished painted with Glidden rattle can Max-Flex all surface ultra-durable finish, this time a color called Black Elegance (really a dark Grey)/satin. Comments and critique always welcome. FYI, I will post my review of the Glidden product in the TOWN SQUARE/ GENERAL SAW SAWING topic.

  7. Haven't done much in the past couple of years due to circumstances. Broke down and did a Kenny Hopkins owl and Russ Beard eagle. Actually haven't done much fretwork in 5 or 6 years doing intarsia instead. Had to relearn a few things. Still unframed, but will be doing that later when I get a few more birds under my belt. Having a ball again.

  11. While looking for a different color for painting a Frame, I found this Glidden product in HD and tried it on a lark. I’m happy to state that it pretty much does what it states on the can. “Dries withing 5 minutes (to the touch - my words) without drips or streaks.” It also states “Flawless Finish” which could be questionable, but quite close to the truth. It also states it is a Interior/exterior Paint + Primer. I found doing a good sanding job and applying a primer (I use either Krylon or Rustoleum) prior to applying the finish Glidden product makes for even a nicer finish. It should be noted that you must be careful not to apply it in too heavy coats. The paint lays very flat without puddleing, and because it dries quickly it allows multiple coats to be applied rather quickly. However, although it dries quickly to the touch, it takes a day or so to become hard and durable. Very easily marred before then. The available colors were limited at HD and the color names are quite unique, to say the least. I personally like the product better than most other spray can paint brands mainly because of the quick dry time. Makes finishing a frame a lot quicker. Doing a little research, I found that there are more colors and finishes available, that I did not see on the shelf in HD. Herfe is a link to HD Glidden products: https://www.homedepot.com/collection/paint/glidden-max-flex-spray-paint/Family-320730528 Hope some of you find this review useful.

    3D preview for patterns

As many of you already know I and my family left Ukraine and we are safe in Latvia now. We had to make this difficult decision and leave everything to be safe. I spent a lot of time to draw up many documents for different social and government services and finally it is time to return to pattern making. I used to make photos and video to show my customers how finished projects (mostly layered) look like. Unfortunately I cant do it now. But I started learning new for me program - LightWave 3D. Luckly I have experience with programs for 3D modeling and visualisation. I took my recent pattern (C198-fox) and tried to work with it. And here are first results. What do you think about such 3D previews? Fox pattern

    New idea

For a few years, I have made these state quarter magnets/ornaments and have sold a fair number and given away far more as thank yous. I needed something different for a big Indiana University basketball fan and came up with the idea of a framed outline on a fabric backer. True to form, I now own several different types of fabric and have patterns swirling for logos and other projects based on fabric backed upcycled frames. Frame size is 5 x 7.

    Tip and tricks

I intend for this post to be a place where anyone can jot down short tips and tricks, one or two lines. I'll start: When I need to fold a long compound pattern, I use my small sheet metal brake (18" HF)

    Tip and tricks

A beaders reamer makes a great needle file, much smaller than a "regular"needle file and the reamer has a finer grit.

Really nice Frank, I like your choice of color for the frame, the frame color doesn't draw my attention to the frame and allows the flowers to stand out IMHO.

Blame it all on my Roots

thanks Frank and Rodney. I decided to make the frame out of 19 x 19mm (3/4" x 3/4") on these and I must say I was impressed at how they turned out. I usually use 42 x 19mm (Ex 2" x 1") for my frames.

    Peacock for my wife

I do remember the Clock Tower. Some items look so terrifying at first but when one thinks of them as 'one hole at a time' , it becomes easier to do. That was how I felt when I started to cut this one and then as I got part of the way through it, it was not nearly as difficult as I thought it was going to be. Dick heppnerguy

    Scrollsaw Bowl

I encourage you to give it a try. Toughest part of the cutting is following the line, while cutting on an angle. Saws with tilting heads make this task much easier. Sanding the glued up rings smooth can be a bit tedious, especially if you don't have anything other than a random orbit sander. Carole Rothman is the master of these things. Check out one of her books. Lots of great ideas for all skill levels and very good instructions on how to make them.

  44. GAWD...this month is a tough one.......... "I guess, "put the kids in the car and go for a long ride in the country." (another simple "adding color to scrolling" project) Art work was done with felt tip pencils on a sheet of paper. A copy was made of the art work and glued to the wood. A couple of clear coats were added and it was done. It LOOKS like it was hand painted. ( both sides are different). JAN

    Summer Scroll Saw Challenge

Not really scrolling related, but I wanted to share a camping trip my son and I took last week. I think I'll have to make something to commemorate the trip. A great way to recharge the soul and make awesome memories with my boy!

  48. I once had a project that taught me that cobalt alloy drill bits are the stiffest (minimum side flex), longest lasting, highest heat rating (have to heat the drill bit to 1500 degrees to lose the temper) of all the alloys. You can special order to a #80 from Home Depot. Yes, they are more expensive, but in this case you really do get what you pay for.
