    Epoxy filled Clover

After I did the epoxy fill clover made of hard Maple as a sun catcher a coworker asked if I could make one for them. Except they wanted dark wood and on a stand to use as a center piece for a table. The clover is Walnut and the stand is hard Maple. Chris

  2. Met a nice talkative person in the record aisle at the thrift store 3 blocks from my shop. He was interested in what I was telling him about cut records. So I made his name on one to see where it goes!!!

  3. To be clear, these are intended to be rustic and use nearly free material. Why nearly free? There is some cost involved in using this material, as with any reclaimed material, there are processing costs that you would not have if using prepared wood. I have just started putting these in my shop. I haven't sold one there yet, but sales are extremely slow. However, I sold one cross before I had listed any of them.

  4. I was excited to get the 20 Minute puzzle book. I originally wasn't going to buy it because if exchange and shipping rates. Found it at my local bookstore when I was there with my cousin. She purchased it for me as a thank you gift. She was staying for a family wedding. I got some cutting time today and knocked this one out. It did take me longer than 20 minutes to cut. And much longer to finish. This is 3/4"Aspen, cut using #5 mg blade and finished with Osmos finish (1 coat).

    3D preview for patterns

Thanks for your support. When we were leaving we could take only some clothes and essential goods. I will not be able to cut new projects in the near future (even if I would get a scrollsaw, there is no place and no conditions to use it). For this moment we were provided with temporary free housing - a room in a hostel. I already bought a laptop here to contine making patterns (for this moment it is only one income for my family). So if someone want to help and have such possibility - you can purchase patterns at my Etsy store.

  9. Haven't done much in the past couple of years due to circumstances. Broke down and did a Kenny Hopkins owl and Russ Beard eagle. Actually haven't done much fretwork in 5 or 6 years doing intarsia instead. Had to relearn a few things. Still unframed, but will be doing that later when I get a few more birds under my belt. Having a ball again.

  10. As many of you already know I and my family left Ukraine and we are safe in Latvia now. We had to make this difficult decision and leave everything to be safe. I spent a lot of time to draw up many documents for different social and government services and finally it is time to return to pattern making. I used to make photos and video to show my customers how finished projects (mostly layered) look like. Unfortunately I cant do it now. But I started learning new for me program - LightWave 3D. Luckly I have experience with programs for 3D modeling and visualisation. I took my recent pattern (C198-fox) and tried to work with it. And here are first results. What do you think about such 3D previews? Fox pattern

    Iris Flowers

Adding to my flower themed Art pieces, I was able to convert this illustration of Iris Flowers Into a scroll saw pattern. Due to the proportions of the illustration my pattern became 9” wide by 19” tall. The cut panel is 5/32 solid core Maple Ply mounted on a Hand Painted ¼” x 12” x 22” BB Ply backer. Again, Artist Acrylics were used to do the coloring. Most of the cutting was done with a Pegas #1 MGT R Blade except for a few small cuts that were done with a #0 Spiral. The assembled panel was protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. Because I planned to paint the Frame, I used good grade of ¾” Pine, instead of my usual Poplar, that I ripped down to 1¾” widths. More cost effective. The well sanded frame was primed painted and then finished painted with Glidden rattle can Max-Flex all surface ultra-durable finish, this time a color called Black Elegance (really a dark Grey)/satin. Comments and critique always welcome. FYI, I will post my review of the Glidden product in the TOWN SQUARE/ GENERAL SAW SAWING topic.

  15. A skip tooth helps keep the cut record groove clean and not melting back together. I used " Open Office to make the name.then I cut between the letters ,not all the way so I could curve the name around the record. Thanks Fab 4!!!

  16. Hi Kevin: What's your process for cutting these vinyl records? Did you make the template yourself? For someone who out of practice, you nailed it Well done, hopefully Mr. Johnson will appreciate your work and get you a few orders Fab4

What Wayne said. Here's a pick of the only bowl I've made to date. It's been watco'd. I also shot a coat of Zinnser's shellac at it but after the pic was taken.

thank you for a detailed answer. that is exactly why i asked. I will use etsy unless there is a more direct way. That is a more of my donated money going to you.. before this posting I was questioning if the purchases were actually getting to you. Now I feel better purchasing your patterns. Me. Mark Eason.

  25. Try using Google Image search to search Steve's site. His file names are terrible. Sample: site:scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com dragon You will get some extraneous hits that don't seem to have anything to do with the search term. However, if you follow the link to them, many will go to a page with several blog posts on the same page. Use the browser to search the page or scroll down and look at the pictures.

  36. Combination of fretwork and intarsia. Oak plywood base, birch ply letters and 4-H symbols, and russian olive trunk. 30x24”. This year the local 4-H club is dedicating the award to it’s namesake. Next year, it will award one 4-Her by adding their name to a leaf. It was an honor to be asked to do this one as I was one of Bobbie’s 4-Hers years ago.

I'd still do the glue-up first. I'm not sure how well the glues we all use will stick to the finished surfaces. Most of our finishes have oil in them and the glues depend on soaking into the wood fibers.

The pattern came from the magazine. How I modify the pattern: 1. print the pattern, cut the pattern at the base of the "crystal" (remove the crystal from the pattern) 2. attach the pattern to the wood blank orienting the pattern so the "crystal end" is at the end of the blank. 3. at the crystal end draw lines from the center of the crystals across the end of the bland to form an X 4. drill an appropriate size hole lengthwise in the top of the blank. (I use my drill press for this, hole diameters vary from 3/16" to 3/8" and are about 1/2" deep) 5. I don't cut the small inside cut for wands with crystals, it just makes the wand "neck" too weak. 6. While cutting the other inside cut, do not cut the bottom of the wood crystal. 7. after cutting the wand out, use the crystal you are using for the wand and mark the end of the wand where the crystal touches, use a dremel and a small longish burr to size the hole to the crystal. 8. use Gorilla Glue very sparingly on the crystal. I use my thumbnail to mark where the glue needs to be, and then while holding the crystal with one hand apply the glue with the other. Set the crystal into the end of the wand and set the wand where it won't be disturbed for a while.

Very nice. I have made some of Al’s wands in the past. Was this one of his patterns published in the magazine or from his ebook of patterns available for purchase or a different source? I have the magazine article and bought his ebook so I can look at those. Can you explain how you modify and add the crystal?

There is an opal mine 111 miles north of my location. Before COVID you could dig at the mine site and pay a nominal fee for the rough opals. I would love to do an opal encrusted wand with a stupid high price on it, glass case, alarm system, armed guards (I know some people ) I have one repeat customer, but she's buying for friends; no collectors, yet.

Very nice job, Tim. I saw this pattern when I first started scrolling and though it would be a great one to do after I got some experience under my belt. Now I'm busy with some other scroll projects but I'll remember this one. Again, great job!
