I got a little shop time again.

I made another Steve Good Strato caster guitar for a friend and mailed it off today without photographing it first but I also finally got around to cutting a Russ Beard pattern that I have had my eye on for a long time. I am really into fret work right now but can not always get around to cutting them. Having been gone for about a month and away from my shop I have not been able to much of anything in my shop. That said, I cut this Mountain Sheep just to finally give it a try. As you can see, I still have the framing to do. I had purchased one for it but the pattern turned out to be a little larger than I anticipated. After I finish the framing and finish work, I have decided not to post that as this shares the part I am really interested with this project. I have a request for one of my farm combines so I may put off the finishing touches on this one until I get it done. I have to add that I am anxious to cut yet another of Russ Beards pattern as soon as i can. Dick heppnerguy6 points -
About six weeks ago I purchased a Pegas Scroll Bandsaw from @Denny Knappen. I received the saw quickly. After Setting it up and using it I discovered that the table was not flat. There is a split through the table that allows you to install the blade. The back half was a touch higher than the front so the edge of my wood would catch on it when I would push it across. It was useable but annoying especially considering the cost of the saw. I was expecting more precision from Pegas. I couldn't find a customer service number on line so I contacted Denny. I was really disappointed in the lack of technical support that Pegas has. I will say that Denny bent over backwards and got Pegas to replace the table. I sure am glad I bought the saw from someone that is all about customer service. If you do intarsia I highly recommend the saw and of coarse purchasing it through Denny. In the past couple of years I have purchased a new dust collector, table saw, drum sander and band saw. The table saw and band saw was the same brand, the band saw was different, and the dust collector was a Jet. The table saw the blade was not mounted in the saw straight and there was not enough adjustment to line it up. Finally after about six months of emails and being ignored I finally got a hold of someone in management that said they would have to replace it. On the band saw the bottom blade guide had a piece missing and I had to make a wood spacer to make it useable. It took me about three months to finally get a hold of a guy to take care of that problem. About two months ago my drum sander died. It took a week before tech support responded to my call. For the past month my dust collector occasionally popped the small breaker on the control panel. About a week ago I called tech support and they called me back in about an hour. Within two days I had a new breaker. That didn't fix it so I called tech support this morning and they called me back within five minutes. The technician explained to me how to take the cap off the motor and adjust a switch. So far so good. Jet has won my future machinery business. Customer service and tech support is more important to me than the cost.5 points

Top menu bar, far left: File From the File menu select Document properties On the D P sub page click into the display tab In the display tab on the right hand side are the display controls There should be a graphic with a grid; underneath the grid are three rectangles; This is where the controls you are looking for reside. You can open more than one at a time; open both the page and the desk options. Switch to RGB on both options. ( there is a rectangular button with a three letter code, click on this and it gives all the color types, choose RGB ) The "page" sub window will now be called the "background", but they mean page. change the "desk" setting to match the "page" setting and Bob's your uncle.3 points

This was the 57th puzzle that I test cut for the "20 minute puzzle book" . It is not in the book but a separate mini book and it took more than 20 minutes. I also did not color it, the staff at FC did. I label each animal with my small desktop laser engraver. 3/4 Maple and I cut all of the puzzles with a Pegas MGT 1 (13 TPI) as I wanted minimum gaps between the pieces.2 points

Breaking Down Costs
amazingkevin and one other reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
Just cuz I love playing with numbers... I sat down and created the spreadsheet below to look at my material costs and in theory how much I make "per hour" based on 2 scenarios. I have 2 types of "Typical 1 day event". My weekly market which is 5 hours every Saturday during the summer and I average $775. And other festivals and other type events that are generally 8-9 hours and I average around $1550. (Believe me, I've done some dud events, but over the past 6 years I know which events are worth doing and that's what I stick with). I do some multi-day events as well, and they average around $1500 per day, so this covers everything nicely. I tried to think of all my costs, but please let me know if you notice anything missing or bad calculations, etc. I'm glad I did this as I didn't realize that booth fees were my second highest cost. I'm just so used to writing the checks when I register for the events. REMINDER TO THE NEWBIES!!! I've been doing this for 6 years and I have busted my ass perfecting my setup, my sales pitch, my products AND I live at the beach with an abundance of markets and events to choose from every year. I do 25-30 events a year. I still have my day job, this is a side hustle that I enjoy more than I can say.2 points -

I was wandering through Pinterest and came across and picture of the Dassault Falcon 900DX. In an earlier life, I had been an aircraft mechanic and had worked on some of the previous versions of this aircraft. The twin engine Falcon 20 came out in 1965 and was initially marketed by Pan AM. This was one of the first corporate jets for major companies like Pepsi and Bristol Myers. When the economy turned down in the early '70's , many were sold. The fledgeling Fed Ex was being started up by Fred Smith and he purchased several and had them modified for a large cargo door. They eventually had 33 aircraft but had to migrate to larger aircraft as the business grew. The economy started to turn around in the mid 70's and Dassault started building larger aircraft like the F50, F200, F2000 and the F900 series to satisify the demand for more fuel efficent range, more seating and updated avionics. The F900DX was in production for '04 to '11 and is still sought after as reliable large mid size corporate jet. The plaque is 11 x 14" on BBPW with a shellac/lacquer finish. Hardest part was probably the landing gear because of all the small cuts and I used the "paint-in" method on the engine cowlings and tires. The aircraft looks to be in the approach mode with flaps down and the DLE (Droop Leading Edges) down to slow the aircraft down for landing.2 points

To be clear, these are intended to be rustic and use nearly free material. Why nearly free? There is some cost involved in using this material, as with any reclaimed material, there are processing costs that you would not have if using prepared wood. I have just started putting these in my shop. I haven't sold one there yet, but sales are extremely slow. However, I sold one cross before I had listed any of them.2 points

I think I should respond here. That was the first and only Pegas Scroll Band Saw I sold. I told Dave I was reluctant as I had no experience with the Pegas Scroll Band Saw. As for the Pegas Scroll Saw, I can answer most questions and if not, Pegas support was there for me. Now, I agree with Dave about Pegas technical support being almost nonexistent on the Pegas Scroll Band Saw. I try to provide the best customer service possible, especially with Pegas Scroll Saw Blades. If anyone has problems with the blades, I would like to know rather than anyone getting upset.2 points -

For a few years, I have made these state quarter magnets/ornaments and have sold a fair number and given away far more as thank yous. I needed something different for a big Indiana University basketball fan and came up with the idea of a framed outline on a fabric backer. True to form, I now own several different types of fabric and have patterns swirling for logos and other projects based on fabric backed upcycled frames. Frame size is 5 x 7.2 points -

Thank you. It is so nice of you to take the time to look at the few things I get around to cutting. It is extremely hot in Southern Arizona in the summer. I hear it is also quite warm in England right now also. It is often 90 degrees F. for a low temperature at night here so the shop get pretty warm and it is difficult to cool it off so that it is comfortable enough to scroll. I do have an air conditioner in my shop but the area of the shop is fairly large and the daily outdoor temperature is up to 113 degrees some days but always at least 104 degrees, on cooler days. The temperature does not change much even if we have a windy day or a cloudy day. Makes spending much time in the shop a bit uncomfortable. Dick heppnerguy2 points -

I had a man, several years ago, that saw an animal puzzle I had posted and he asked me where I got the pattern. I told him that I had made it and he asked me if I would sell the pattern to him. I replied that he was more than welcome to have it for free. He then told me he was new to scrolling and was looking for more animal puzzles to cut so I made him several and sent them to him. He was very excited about having them. They are so easy to make and cut. I, personally have not been very interested in puzzles so I rarely cut any, unless it is a request for a great grandchild of ours. I am always amazed when I see others cutting projects that I don't bother to cut and often they sell a lot of them. Puzzles are a good example of what I am talking about. It just proves to me that I should not try to second guess about other peoples likes and dislikes and instead I should not judge my likes to be like everyone elses and give more attention to cutting all sorts of items. You have a much better handle on this subject then do I. Keep right on cutting those puzzles and so many other things that I have chosen to ignore and perhaps I will 'wake the hell up', as Jeff Dunham would say. Dick heppnerguy2 points -
I had this cutting setting around for a while now. I was trying to find a home for it so I finally decided to paint it and use it as a refrigerator magnet. This was from an Alex Fox pattern that I made to have 1 layer and smaller. I also put the 45 deg angle on the outer edge. I found this difficult to do. Painting skills are poor. I had to mix colors to make pink and light blue hippie style. I wanted a grey military for the bottom text. Yellow green mixed to attempt spring green. Just winging it with paint scheme. Cheap hobby acrylic paint in tubes was used. Shrinking the design made cutting center of letters very narrow. 1/8 inch solid maple. Cut with 2/0 spiral Pegas. Outer edge was cut with MGT #1.1 point

You might want to check with your insurance broker. Because you are earning an income from your hobby, ANY claim you may have on your house might not be covered because you didn't disclose the "business". Just call me a paranoid, now retired, insurance broker.1 point -

Don't think you can get insurance to cover your cost of damaged items at a retail price level.. only at a raw materials level..1 point
-
You know me I can knit pick that list of expenses to pieces.. but I'll keep it out of the equation. though the knit pick list is very long it does add up to be a substantial total. You have some bigger expenses not mentioned though.. Just to name a couple of them without writing the whole list I can think of off the top of my head is.. (Even if I knit pick this down you still do fairly well for just having fun..) Business Insurance? Mine's about $400 a year.. but I don't have a business vehicle or maintenance and insurance fees for one either.. How about credit card processing fees? Any shows you do that you travel more than a couple miles? All day shows do you pack lunch, stay in a hotel etc. It was nice of the IRS to give us a whopping $0.04 more for mileage deduction when fuel prices doubled as well as everything else vehicle maintenance etc. related to travel just about doubled too.. I guess they thought that $0.04 should help cover those mileage expenses, LOL1 point

It does have a pin. The table is flat where the pin is. If the slit was in the same place as the standard bandsaw I don't think I would have noticed the small ledge but it is 90 degrees from the normal saw.1 point
-
I'm curious Dave, does the table of the Pegas bandsaw have a pin in the side of it to align the two halves of the table? My Delta bandsaw has one and most every bandsaw I've ever seen also had one. I'd be surprised if your Pegas saw was different.1 point

Fantastic job, Dick. I understand how fretwork can be addictive. I just finished cutting Jim Blume's stagecoach which I probably have close to 30 hours. I've stained and placed on backer and hope to frame this weekend. I will say that I needed to do something a little easier and set up another (simple) pattern to cut while waiting on finishes/glue to dry on the stagecoach. As for your Mountain Sheep, I'm positive your frame will be outstanding. I believe you have that science down to a snap.1 point -
