Stagecoach
Eplfan2011 and 8 others reacted to Dak0ta52 for a topic
This is the Jim Blume stagecoach I've been working on. The darker one is 1/4 Oak ply and the lighter one is 1/4 Birch ply They were cut by stacking and using Pegas 2/0 spiral blades. I lost count on the number of blades. My upper arm does not lift and the pieces are so large I would inevitably bend the blade when trying to feed them which eventually caused them to break. The Oak was finished with Minwax Colonial Pine stain while the Birch was finished with Minwax Natural stain. Both have a 1/4 Birch ply backer painted black. Each also has six coats of clear with light sanding with 600 grit between coats. Both frames are pre-made framing material. The darker of the two originally had a rough gray finish. I gave it a light sanding and then covered it with Minwax Espresso stain. I then gave it 2 coats of clear. The lighter one is Maple stained with Minwax Natural and also has two coats of clear. Both frames have shim splines in the corners to add strength. Total time including the frames I have about 40 hours in these pieces but I feel they were worth every minute. Thanks again to Jim Blume for a fantastic pattern! By the way, the reason the Oak piece is facing the opposite direction is because I messed up when I stacked them and put the finish side face down rather than face up.9 points -

Completed these 2 today. It has been a long time since I made any name puzzles and I had to stop and stir the grey matter a few times to bring back my methods. Cut from 6mm mdf with a 3mm mdf backer. I used a Pegas PG#3 and should of used a #5. The pieces are a little more snug than I like when making puzzles for little hands. Isabel 310mm x 105mm, Charlie 370mm x 105mm. The dot on the I is glued in place.3 points

@barb.j.enders is very correct! Just an FYI and CYA for consideration - for anyone reading this thread... If your insurance co. decides what you do makes your home a commercial entity, they can/will cancel you. We are seeing that quite a bit here in our real estate market with Solar Panels - Jennifer and I are both real estate agents. The "supposed" sell back of electricity to the power co. creates a commercial entity and residential insurance company's are dropping home owners left and right. Many home owners are now unable to obtain residential insurance because of this. It happens when the insurance co. renews a policy and requests a 4 point inspection of the property. That's how they find out and how they "get" the owners on record. I have a separate insurance policy for the shop in the garage and write that off as an actual business expense. The policy is completely separate from my home owners policy so any claim can not be used against my residential policy. In fact my residential policy no longer covers the lower portion of my garage, only the upper portion which is a small "nursery" room.2 points -
Absolutely beautiful pieces Rodney. Kudos also to Jim for wonderful pattern. Both nice, but the lower one really pops IMHO.2 points

I was wandering through Pinterest and came across and picture of the Dassault Falcon 900DX. In an earlier life, I had been an aircraft mechanic and had worked on some of the previous versions of this aircraft. The twin engine Falcon 20 came out in 1965 and was initially marketed by Pan AM. This was one of the first corporate jets for major companies like Pepsi and Bristol Myers. When the economy turned down in the early '70's , many were sold. The fledgeling Fed Ex was being started up by Fred Smith and he purchased several and had them modified for a large cargo door. They eventually had 33 aircraft but had to migrate to larger aircraft as the business grew. The economy started to turn around in the mid 70's and Dassault started building larger aircraft like the F50, F200, F2000 and the F900 series to satisify the demand for more fuel efficent range, more seating and updated avionics. The F900DX was in production for '04 to '11 and is still sought after as reliable large mid size corporate jet. The plaque is 11 x 14" on BBPW with a shellac/lacquer finish. Hardest part was probably the landing gear because of all the small cuts and I used the "paint-in" method on the engine cowlings and tires. The aircraft looks to be in the approach mode with flaps down and the DLE (Droop Leading Edges) down to slow the aircraft down for landing.2 points

My $50.00 DW-788 Scroll Saw
John Smith reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
At that point, it becomes an experimental situation. What is happening is that when you "tension" the blade, it is pulling that wedge toward you and forcing the upper arm up to apply tension. So, essentially, when you back off the tension from 5 to 3, you are "lenthening" the rod. So if that makes the noise go away, I'd turn the rod out a thread or so. That way, you can have the tension set at 5 but in actuality, it is at about 3. Not sure that is a good thing as you need to be able to have high tension is some cases. What I'd try to do is figure out why, when set at 5, it is making noise. I think the noise is coming from the upper connecting rod, as they call it, contacting the underside of that cover. So, you might have to take some more off of it. I'm pretty sure that is where the knocking is coming from and it only happens at high speed. You are on the right track though. Once you are done, you will have a very good understanding of how the mechanism works. I'm not sure why it doesn't happen to the bottom connecting rod. Probably because there is nothing there for it to bang against. If you could nail down exactly where the upper con rod is hitting that cover, you could probably file it down a bit. Instead of the cover. Try taking more off the cover as that's the easiest spot. I had to really take a bunch off of mine. If I still had the saw, I'd take a pic for you.1 point -

The more money you make the more money goes to the IRS.. He's doing it all wrong when you leave out most of the expenses that "could" be deducted.. The right way is to see how little you can "show" you make and still have the business survive.. .. While my statement is kind of funny, it is true..1 point -

Stagecoach

Very well done. Nicely cut, finished and framed. Overall presentation is absolutely beautiful. Like others, I like the lower one just a tiny bit better. You might consider using 1/8 material when stack cutting and using small blades. Just a little easier too handle. I also dimple my drill holes on the back side with my dremel tool to make feeding the blade through eaiser. But I still kink and break a lot of 2/0 spiral blades when cutting projects like these. That is why I buy them by the gross.1 point -

Another great project. I love how you always put some extra fret detail that others might leave out so that your patterns always have a little added challenge in them that makes one pay attention to detail should they have the opportunity to cut one of them. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Buffalo
CSull reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Well I have to tell you how I view this project. I, personally, really like the color of the backer board that the fact that is carries on through the entire project. I thought how perfect it was, when I saw it and I also think it brings out a sort of fearfulness to the buffalo. Also I really like the frame you made and the color and size of it, as I believe it makes the buffalo look like he is challenging whom ever is looking him in the eyes. I always appreciate constructive criticism and see if I would have done something a little differently, seeing it through someone else's eyes. I just happen to have a different view on this one than does FrankEV and it is ok to look at things in a different light than another person. It really doesn't make one of us right or wrong, it just means we have a little different view point on our likes. Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. The good part is you get some information to consider on your next project, perhaps Dick heppnerguy1 point -

You are going to run out of room. I was wondering when you were going to get around and make one of me for you entertainment wall. Hey, my wife had my make one of myself. I thought I was going to get a place of honor in our front room until I spotted it in the cupboard and ask her why she put it in there where no one could see it. She replied, " I didn't want it for people to look at, I wanted it to keep the mice out of the cupboard." I keep trying to justify it by thinking that it does have some value after all. Both are very nice Danny. I do love the crow. I had a pattern in mind the other day and wondered how it would look with the face black and the backer light. You have answered that question. With the right picture... fantastic.1 point

I found, through experience, that if I lengthened the rod, it became sort of floppy loose and had a tendency to rattle. By shortening it and taking that slop out of it, the noise went away. Anyway, to your point, if it is running vibration free and quiet, best leave everything alone. I watched your first videos and it sounded like mine did when it was making that noise. That's the only reason I mentioned it. I'm happy if you are happy. Now, go make sawdust. Also, I'm sure that others will gain something from our back and forth's and your videos as it's a common problem. Most people don't have the know-how to take these things apart and fix what's wrong with them.1 point

Mr. Ed
heppnerguy reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I did a very quick cut of a Horse Head pattern I converted from a free stencil I found on-line. The cut panel is 5/32 x 10 x10 solid core Maple mounted on a ¼ x12x12 Cherry Backer that I stained dark with Minwax Honey. I added the “Mr Ed”(*) to the pattern, and yes I had to glue in the center of the “d”. The Frame is ¾” wide pine, primed and then painted with Glidden Max-Flex Chocolate Pretzel/Satin. It is not the Tan I was hoping for. Their colors are strange! Everything was competed in just two days. Comment and critique always welcome. * I recently delt with a Hearing Aid Specialist that treated me very well. When he mentioned his name he made a point of saying it was “Ed”… like “MR. ED”. The Show and the horse popped into my head and just had to cut a piece for him to display in his facility. Could not quite get a good likeness of the actual horse from the show, but thought this simple horse head pattern would do. I have a follow up appointment with him tomorrow and will give it to him then. EDIT 7/22: He loved it. Hung it up right next to the reception desk. I was pleased.1 point -

About six weeks ago I purchased a Pegas Scroll Bandsaw from @Denny Knappen. I received the saw quickly. After Setting it up and using it I discovered that the table was not flat. There is a split through the table that allows you to install the blade. The back half was a touch higher than the front so the edge of my wood would catch on it when I would push it across. It was useable but annoying especially considering the cost of the saw. I was expecting more precision from Pegas. I couldn't find a customer service number on line so I contacted Denny. I was really disappointed in the lack of technical support that Pegas has. I will say that Denny bent over backwards and got Pegas to replace the table. I sure am glad I bought the saw from someone that is all about customer service. If you do intarsia I highly recommend the saw and of coarse purchasing it through Denny. In the past couple of years I have purchased a new dust collector, table saw, drum sander and band saw. The table saw and band saw was the same brand, the band saw was different, and the dust collector was a Jet. The table saw the blade was not mounted in the saw straight and there was not enough adjustment to line it up. Finally after about six months of emails and being ignored I finally got a hold of someone in management that said they would have to replace it. On the band saw the bottom blade guide had a piece missing and I had to make a wood spacer to make it useable. It took me about three months to finally get a hold of a guy to take care of that problem. About two months ago my drum sander died. It took a week before tech support responded to my call. For the past month my dust collector occasionally popped the small breaker on the control panel. About a week ago I called tech support and they called me back in about an hour. Within two days I had a new breaker. That didn't fix it so I called tech support this morning and they called me back within five minutes. The technician explained to me how to take the cap off the motor and adjust a switch. So far so good. Jet has won my future machinery business. Customer service and tech support is more important to me than the cost.1 point

You should be able to get coverage for the "stock" which would be retail price level. However, that premium might come at a premium.1 point -
You know me I can knit pick that list of expenses to pieces.. but I'll keep it out of the equation. though the knit pick list is very long it does add up to be a substantial total. You have some bigger expenses not mentioned though.. Just to name a couple of them without writing the whole list I can think of off the top of my head is.. (Even if I knit pick this down you still do fairly well for just having fun..) Business Insurance? Mine's about $400 a year.. but I don't have a business vehicle or maintenance and insurance fees for one either.. How about credit card processing fees? Any shows you do that you travel more than a couple miles? All day shows do you pack lunch, stay in a hotel etc. It was nice of the IRS to give us a whopping $0.04 more for mileage deduction when fuel prices doubled as well as everything else vehicle maintenance etc. related to travel just about doubled too.. I guess they thought that $0.04 should help cover those mileage expenses, LOL1 point
