    Filling Time

When I was doing the finish on my stagecoach project I wanted something to cut while the stains, finishes or glue was drying. This is an 8 1/2 X 11 pattern by Grampa that I double stack cut using 1/4 Maple and 1/4 Oak ply. The Maple was finished with Minwax Colonial Pine stain and finished with 5 coats of clear gloss spray sanded between cuts. The Oak was finished with Minwax Natural stain and also has 5 coats of clear gloss spray. Something I did a little different is I sprayed the Birch backer with flat black rather than my typical gloss black. Both frames are pre-manufactured framing material that I cut to size. I used a Pegas 0 spiral blade. This was a lot of fun to cut after the more demanding requirements of the stagecoach. Thanks Grampa!

    Stagecoach

This is the Jim Blume stagecoach I've been working on. The darker one is 1/4 Oak ply and the lighter one is 1/4 Birch ply They were cut by stacking and using Pegas 2/0 spiral blades. I lost count on the number of blades. My upper arm does not lift and the pieces are so large I would inevitably bend the blade when trying to feed them which eventually caused them to break. The Oak was finished with Minwax Colonial Pine stain while the Birch was finished with Minwax Natural stain. Both have a 1/4 Birch ply backer painted black. Each also has six coats of clear with light sanding with 600 grit between coats. Both frames are pre-made framing material. The darker of the two originally had a rough gray finish. I gave it a light sanding and then covered it with Minwax Espresso stain. I then gave it 2 coats of clear. The lighter one is Maple stained with Minwax Natural and also has two coats of clear. Both frames have shim splines in the corners to add strength. Total time including the frames I have about 40 hours in these pieces but I feel they were worth every minute. Thanks again to Jim Blume for a fantastic pattern! By the way, the reason the Oak piece is facing the opposite direction is because I messed up when I stacked them and put the finish side face down rather than face up.

    If I MAY SAY HELLO

Been gone for sometime, having to readjust my life to the trials and tribulations of getting old... There are no "Golden Years" brothers and sisters, there is just "getting old, body wearing out" years... I have had to make some adjustments, but I am getting it figured out and am getting a chance to to spend some time in the shop..I really have not left the forum, I have just been present as a by-stander.. Got to say people, you have raised the scrolling bar. I see things being crafted that we did not use to do, well not much anyway... The addition of color in scrolled pieces is getting a lot more attention.. I see some really unique and beautiful productions... Kevin is back! That really had me worried.. So glad you are okay Kevin.. Scroll Saw Village would be less without you here. Over the past few weeks I have worked on a coupe things. Got to say if I had to pick a pattern of the year, for me it may be @FrankEV 's "Trees of Green". That is one of my favorite song, always lifts me up when I am somewhat down... The song has been going through my head every since he posted it.. Thought if I cut it, it would get out of my head, but it has not. So I cut it, but with a little modification.. I wanted to see some real rose looking flowers in it, after all it speaks of "red roses too". So I found some rose silhouette pictures and added them... Not real satisfied with it but am going to try some more. The four bottom black blobs were suppose to be silhouettes of rose bud... I will look further. Also I broke our three or four pieces after I finished cutting it. Got them glue back in, but it is far from good. Bad thing I cut it in a great piece of wood... but it is only wood.. this was trial one. The finished product I intend to add some color.. One thing that is an added bonus to Frank's pattern,,, If you cut the tree as one piece you get this neat little tree, to do something else with! The second thing I have recently built, this weekend in fact was just a fun project to help me keep my dogs balls in a good place. I made this ball dispenser. He is pretty happy with it, but he is pretty fussy about his balls, and was somewhat miffed that I screwed up a little on gluing the last "S" on the front.. So there it is.. Missed participating in this forum. I will be here when I can..

I haven't been on much lately. As some of you may know, my wife died suddenly last week. With the help of patterns by Botas Helder, I finally made it out to the shop yesterday to cut a couple portraits of her for the memorial service today. Her name is Connie, and I hope you see the likeness

    Blades breaking

G'day all, Not a real problem, but just wondering if anybody else has had problems with the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #3 Blades. I have had these for quite awhile, but find that they tend to break at the "Crimp" after a dozen or so hole changes (Clampings.) I have a new batch. only a couple of months old and will get around to trying them ASAP. It's a bit of bugbear especially since 90% of the blade is still good, just short Also I'm getting a little tired of Jumping every time one does break, good exercise, though it may be

Great to get an update Paul and to see you have found some time in the shop. I am sure Ali loves his ball dispenser and appreciates the organization to easily find a ball to throw for him. Your Trees of Green looks good to me. Not sure if I attempted it that my tree would come out all in one piece. prayers for you and yours, visit and update when you can. You have been missed around here as well.

    If I MAY SAY HELLO

He uses LaCrosse balls,,, and yep pour old Ali has been neutered. I go him at 14 months old... I got him from a young Chinese couple that had to find him a new home, the mother and number 2 son were allergic to him.. we have had Ali for over three years. They still keep in touch with us. On Ali papers his name is "Sparky'. Not a name for a lab.. they said it Chinese Sparky would be Ali.. Ali made a better name, so that is what he goes by. This couple, Chinese Americans.. their sons first names are Walter and Forest... how is that for Chinese names.. They are really a great family.

    If I MAY SAY HELLO

Glad to see you can get back on the saw, Paul. Yes, I understand how that song can get into your head. It did the same with me and I ended up cutting Frank's pattern also. I'm glad to see you were referring to "tennis" balls. I was thinking when I read you message that my dogs have been neutered. Anyway, you did a great job and I like the addition of the roses. If there was a mistake with the letters on the "ball" tender, I surely didn't see it.

Those are “samples” given away by your chief sales staff to help make further sales. Thus a deductible business expense. Besides, probably still cheaper then her having to go to the store and buy a much more expensive gift. Plus, happy wife or (“war office”)happy life.

  14. I use FD-UR #3 all the time. I have not had any issue with breaking and some I think would be a couple of years old. They get mixed in with new ones I have bought. Pete sent me some he got from Garnet Hall that he did not like. I tested on my EX-21 and then have used with my 101 coursed on DW788. Not a problem. Recently the blades were slipping out from the bottom blade holder. I did everything I could think of changed to pegas, removed bottom blade clamp and screw, reset, sanded the blades, degreased - still no change. I have an EX-21 and checked the arm was parallel to the table and it was out just a hair. reset and there has not been an issue since. Back to my favorite blade FD-UR.

John Haven't had any problems with the ones I have and use. You said they were breaking around the crimp ? Try putting them in a little shallower in the top clamp. May just be the clamp is trying to flatten the crimp giving it a weak spot. Also make sure the clamps have smooth surfaces and haven't developed a sharp edge. Keep us posted .

  22. Well no satisfaction on removing this blight. I have rinsed the various solvents away and let it dry. I took to some light sanding yesterday and made no improvement..At this point I am guessing this may be a part of the BB glue up as I can’t make any progress in its removal. I guess this will remain one of those great mysteries and I will have to recut. Thank you to all for the various suggestions.

    Blades breaking

I don't use FD blades a whole lot any more but I do use the #5 quite often as the entry hole for veining can be a smaller hole than a Pegas blade.. that is the downside to pegas blades. I swap back and forth between brands quite a lot depending on the material and project.. My blades gotta be 5-6 years old so maybe older than what you have.. I've not had any issues with them.. Sometimes they get a run of bad blades.. I've had it happen in both brands over the years.. Hope your new batch solves the issue as it can be quite frustrating to break a lot of blades.. do more blade changing than cutting, LOL

Beautiful work Rodney! I'd love to have that above the cowboy section of my wall but, wow that's a lot of holes. Maybe some day. You did such a great job and I'd say turning the oak one backwards was a fortunate accident. Hard to pick a favorite as both are great in their own way but I do love how the grain of the oak adds to the background. Excellent!!!

really nice. Beautiful work. So you got 2 pictures of same stage coach going and then coming back home. I choose the upper one for coming back home. Just because the sky has more clouds (grain) and is a bit darker. That photographer was pretty good of catching the same position of action both times. Especially with the old 1870's cameras. Well done. The 5412 cuts look very detailed.

Wow, what great cuts! That is a lot of patience, and a lot of holes to cut and drill. I like the birch ply best-IMHO it really shows the detail.

  37. The tension rod that connects to the tensioner arm is held very firmly in place by the cap. While I had it open, there was no slack or slop in the rod itself. I'm done. There is nothing else to do. For me, in my very limited experience, it is running perfect now. Very, very little to no vibration and the blade is perfectly aligned (for me) and I'm very satisfied with the machine as it is running now, all I have to do is put some projects through it and see how they turn out. in http://www.scrollsaws.com/ Stopping the knock on the Dewalt: to remove the knocking noise you need to adjust the tensioning rod #24 counter clockwise (lengthens the assembly).Try one full turn. Then you say to turn in, not out (clockwise) . . . . well, since I didn't notice any movement in the rod while it was running wide open, I didn't do anything to it and buttoned it all up and it's done. Thanks for the input. Edit: The cheap Point-n-Shoot camera that I am using (not a smart phone) may be amplifying and distorting the sound which you hear in the video that sounds like it is coming apart. And actually, in person, it is running very smooth and I do not hear a knocking noise or other screaching sounds. (so it may be my recording device).

  39. Beautigul cutting Todd @Badgerboy, lots of skill and lots of patience showing in that. Regrets I do not have any magic on how to remove that, you might have to cut it again, maybe using a different method of attaching the pattern this time so you do not need to use mineral spirits to remove it. Question, why was there still toner ink remaining on the pattern after you did the cutting?

My thought yesterday was just to order 4 or 5 of the same pattern. But he does not have a quantity column in the shopping cart. So I just ordered 5 patterns. The intent is to use Etsy as a tool to get him funds. Before work from home, I spend about $30.00 of gas each week for commuting. So I will use some of this saving to donate to his future. The first year of stay at home the hair stylist industry was stopped. No work. I donated my gas money to my wife's hairstylist until they were given the ok to work. She was so pleased. Me. 45. I just received a newly published puzzle book. It is titled, 20 MINUTE SCROLL SAW PUZZLES by Jaeheon Yun and published by Fox Chapel. Jaeheon is from South Korea. If you make puzzles and toys, I think you will really like this book. The puzzles are unique, different, they are simple, sweet and stackable. The puzzle designs are amazing and, the thing I really like about this book is these puzzles will make you smile. (How many woodworking books out there make you smile? ) Have a great day, JAN
