    Mandalorian +++

I have just finished cutting the Mandalorian pattern by Helder Botas and have added another of his patterns (shrunk) of "the Child) in the top right cnr. Cut from 4mm Hoop Pine Ply using #3 FDUR and #2FD New Spirals. One of the Mandalorian pics has glitter applied to the backer. It is hard to photograph so I've posted a few of it to give the idea. You may have click on the pics to enlarge them so as to see the glitter. I think it adds another dimension which I like. The others are of Slim Dusty, I have cut him many times before, however this time I used a thinner frame and also matted one. Mando 370 x 310mm, Slim 300 x 225mm

Made this from a Steve Good pattern for my entry way. I had a old piece of barn wood that I used for the backing part.

    Stallion

This Horse Head pattern was converted from an available on-line image to add to my Horse theme pieces. The conversion transformed a positive image into a negative for cutting. The cut panel is 5/32” thk x 11 x 17 solid core Maple mounted to a 1/4” thk darkened oak backer. The cutting was done with Pegas #1 MGT R. Assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. The Frame is 1 ¾” wide Poplar. The frame was distressed and finished with Minwax Early American Stain protected with Clear Satin Spray Polyurethane. Comments and Critique always welcome.

Hi from Barbara This is to share as you guys are fully to blame for getting me so addicted to this hobby. This is not complaint it is in recognition of your input. My scroll saw has a mate. My husband has got me a second had Ryobi scroll saw. From a man who has cared for it and stopped using it. It had no bits for the pinless blades. To my excitement the hardware store near us has been changing and added a more available tools and service and got me the goodies. So eager was the Ryobi guy. It is one of our best choices and today i am going to try one of your practice sheets and cut as I told hubby I had a shock when trying to use it. I jumped and turned it off as I was so sacred I had broken it but it was that I was used to a different feel with the other one. I am keeping old faithful. BEST BIRTHDAY GIFT EVER FROM HUBBY.

    If I MAY SAY HELLO

Been gone for sometime, having to readjust my life to the trials and tribulations of getting old... There are no "Golden Years" brothers and sisters, there is just "getting old, body wearing out" years... I have had to make some adjustments, but I am getting it figured out and am getting a chance to to spend some time in the shop..I really have not left the forum, I have just been present as a by-stander.. Got to say people, you have raised the scrolling bar. I see things being crafted that we did not use to do, well not much anyway... The addition of color in scrolled pieces is getting a lot more attention.. I see some really unique and beautiful productions... Kevin is back! That really had me worried.. So glad you are okay Kevin.. Scroll Saw Village would be less without you here. Over the past few weeks I have worked on a coupe things. Got to say if I had to pick a pattern of the year, for me it may be @FrankEV 's "Trees of Green". That is one of my favorite song, always lifts me up when I am somewhat down... The song has been going through my head every since he posted it.. Thought if I cut it, it would get out of my head, but it has not. So I cut it, but with a little modification.. I wanted to see some real rose looking flowers in it, after all it speaks of "red roses too". So I found some rose silhouette pictures and added them... Not real satisfied with it but am going to try some more. The four bottom black blobs were suppose to be silhouettes of rose bud... I will look further. Also I broke our three or four pieces after I finished cutting it. Got them glue back in, but it is far from good. Bad thing I cut it in a great piece of wood... but it is only wood.. this was trial one. The finished product I intend to add some color.. One thing that is an added bonus to Frank's pattern,,, If you cut the tree as one piece you get this neat little tree, to do something else with! The second thing I have recently built, this weekend in fact was just a fun project to help me keep my dogs balls in a good place. I made this ball dispenser. He is pretty happy with it, but he is pretty fussy about his balls, and was somewhat miffed that I screwed up a little on gluing the last "S" on the front.. So there it is.. Missed participating in this forum. I will be here when I can..

    Is it or Isn't it??

The almost pure white poplar is hard to come by! I, l like many others, always check the wood selection of poplar at the big boxes, and will snap up any of the white boards and any with different coloring. I still have a 2 inch wide by 24 inch that would pass for ebony when a finish is applied! The colorings of the wood make for interesting compound cuts of ornaments when glued up! Erv

  27. Looks like poplar that I use most.. I have had some pieces with brown, green, purple look to them.. but I try to stay away from those for the puzzles I make.. the unicorn puzzle might be cool from the rainbow colored pieces I have.. but a dog puzzle to me looks best from just plain blah wood.. LOL

    Is it or Isn't it??

I made a 4' tall cross out of 3" x 4" poplar and it was almost pure white. No other colors in it. I'm sure it will darken slightly over time. A few years ago I made a poplar stool that had browns, reds, purples and greens in it. Yes, poplar can vary significantly. Very easy to work with, though.

  29. Poplar can come from many different parts of the world and consequently can take on extremely different characteristics. Some such as rainbow poplar is very grainy, with lots of colors. Others take on a more blond look.

  32. The key point here is "having fun" and getting paid to do it. Who could complain about that. I have been doing handyman stuff around the park where I live and I enjoy it. I make a few bucks and help out the older folks who can no longer do it themselves. But, when I start to feel "used", I don't take the job. It's my time and I'll use it whatever way I want to. Except I have to check with the wife first. LOL.

    Breaking Down Costs

I cannot agree more with the having fun.. when it's no longer fun I'll also quit doing it.. I'm on 14 years of this now and this is the first year that I've been kinda coasting.. taking time off to do "other things I like doing" hence.. building the race car and just enjoying "real cars" instead of making wood car clocks, LOL.. I'm still open for business.. but I haven't advertised, promoted or done much to bring in more business.. still busy enough. After the covid lock downs for those two years was the busiest I've ever been and I was starting to get the kind of feeling of it being "work" since the lock downs forced a lot of folks to buy online I was swamp with work the whole two years.. made some real good money so I'm playing with this racecar build.. I do a little car repair stuff for a few friends and family and always have.. something I also enjoy and when I'm tired of making sawdust.. there is enough friends / family and friends of those friends etc.. I can and sometimes do slide into that business sector from time to time.. I turn a lot of work away on the auto repair side because well.. it's taxing on the body.. love doing it and can be good money but turn most of the work away these days.. much more fun sitting on a stool making sawdust and wood cars, LOL With car prices these days a lot of auto repair work to be had and pretty easy to get work if needed / wanted in both auto repair and body / collision work..

    Breaking Down Costs

When I stop enjoying it, I'll stop doing it. So far, after 6 years, I still love every minute at my saw and every hour at whatever craft event I'm at. And if it puts a spare $20,000 in my pocket each year after expenses that I can have fun with and enjoy with the family, even better. My full time day job is stressful, but also allows me the luxury of sneaking into the garage some times in between conference calls and cut a puzzle or two. My "free" mental therapy." I could never come close to what I make at the day job with my little hobby business, believe me I've tried crunching the numbers, but not just the paycheck, but the health insurance, etc, makes it impossible. If I'm still doing this in 8 or 9 years when I retire, great... some added retirement income as well. I enjoy staying busy and knowing that I could stop at any time if I need a break.

Thanks Melanie. I have to do some shuffling pretty often trying to keep people in their category. The other day I had to have some work done at the house and had a crew of about 6 guys here who wound up in my shop looking at my portraits. Have to admit I enjoyed it. They're mostly only seen by family members who say, "Hmm." Keeps me humble though.

  49. I have researched this. Labels are attached while the vinyl is still warm during the manufacturing process. They are not removable. I have placed a paper insert from the record that had the center cut out to show the label over the record to provide a block while spraying the label. That worked pretty well.

Wow! I never realized what a bunch of Philistines you guys were down there. Kidding of course. It's considered by some to be the greatest country song of all time. I don't know about that, but it's certainly one of the saddest.
