Just wanted to put a couple of these on that I did today. Want to give a big shout out to Don in Brookline for taking the time to work on these for me. He did seven patterns for me for all mr grandkids. I have five more to do. Once I cut them all out I will sand them with my mop sander attached to my drill. My granddaughter is going to paint them all there favorite colors. Thank God I don’t have to do that. Lol. These are 9 1/2 x 7. Thanks again Don.

About 175 pieces of wenge and aspen. I really don't consider it intarsia because every piece is the same height and very little shaping.

  4. Made this for my grandson, who is on the Havana Ducks basketball team this year. All cut on the scroll saw, with 3/4" poplar for the body and 6mm BB for the wings. Finished with craft acrylics, but still needs the final clear coat. I have a lot more to make, and I don't work very hard at them, so it takes a while. Tom Havana duck movie.mp4

  5. We are blessed to have our 13 year old grand daughter spend a week with us. I am in heaven when she asks to spend time with me in my shop learning a new scrolling technique. She did just about everything herself on this Spiderman box. She is definitely a perfectionist.

  8. I saw the little word patterns that Steve Good put on his page and I thought it would be fun to see how fast I could cut it. I was bored so I printed the pattern out and went to work on it. I was not concerned about how well it was going to come out but I had some old wood given to me that my neighbor had in their garbage so planed it down and decided to see how it cut. It is 1/4 inch thick and was very rough and had a lot of paint on it. I found it easy to cut and so away I went. Due to the fact that it was not something I was going to keep or even wanted to, I got to work on it. It took me 8 minutes to cut the words and 6 minutes to cut the backer board and about one minute to spray both pieces. I had to wait about 20 minutes for the paint to dry and then I glued it and set it face down under a board and put an 8 pound weight on it for a clamp. When I took the clamp off an hour later I found out it had stuck to the paper I had it laying on and the results was ugly as part of the paper stuck to the paint that was not quite dry. Moral of story is. don't get into a rush because it is not how fast one does a project but how well. I had fun timing myself and the wood cut nicely and it was free. plus I was not interested in keeping it when I finished. I had fun challenging myself and finding out the wood will work well for some simple projects in the future. Dick heppnerguy

  9. Thanks to Jim for these great patterns......It's been so hot that I have been unable to spend any time scrolling out in the garage, so I thought I would give watercolor pencils a try. The projects were previously triple stacked cut with # 3 and # 1 fd scroll reverse blades and I used Arteza 48 count watercolor pencils. Also, I Just want to say that I visit this website frequently and I have been inspired by and in awe of the wonderful group of talented scrollers that populate this site. Thanks to all..... Any and all critiques welcome.....forrest

I finished this project this morning. The pattern is by Jacob Fowler and found in the book “Woodworker’s Pattern Book”. I cut it on the Pegas Scroll Saw using several Pegas #1R MGT blades. The wood is1/2” unknown and 3/4” Red Oak for the base. The finish is spray Minwax Lacquer Clear Satin. Comments welcome.

Oh man, that's worth staring at for a while. Beautiful work! Is it painted, and is the texture on the black pieces natural or did you do it?

Not going to add any color at this time. I think if I was going to add color I would have done so before I put it all together. why don't you build one and use color and post it so I might have an idea on how to do it? Dick heppnerguy

    Mandalorian +++

I have just finished cutting the Mandalorian pattern by Helder Botas and have added another of his patterns (shrunk) of "the Child) in the top right cnr. Cut from 4mm Hoop Pine Ply using #3 FDUR and #2FD New Spirals. One of the Mandalorian pics has glitter applied to the backer. It is hard to photograph so I've posted a few of it to give the idea. You may have click on the pics to enlarge them so as to see the glitter. I think it adds another dimension which I like. The others are of Slim Dusty, I have cut him many times before, however this time I used a thinner frame and also matted one. Mando 370 x 310mm, Slim 300 x 225mm

  19. Here is a little project I saw on Steve Good's site last week and decided to give it a try. I am in the process of making a neighbor one of the combines like I made during Christmas last year. I thought it would be fun to give my neighbor a windmill along with the combine to kind of set it off, as it is a farm thing too. It was a fun little project and I will most likely make a few more as I have a lot of country family folks in my family. I know they would probably like one also. It is an easy and fun project to make . This one I made with BB Ply. Dick heppnerguy

  20. Other day had a customer that ordered a truck clock that I have then proceeded to tell me to make it a 1970 Chevy instead of the 1978 one they ordered, LOL... hate when customers place their order and then tell you to modify it.. Like shouldn't the custom request be done before ordering.. I'm thinking about ordering a brand new 2022 Chevy 4x4 truck but then message them after paying for it and tell them to make it a 1965 truck if it works like that.. Anyway, we worked things out.. and she sent me pictures of the truck she wanted a clock made of.. and here is what I came up with.. I'm not sure what I'm missing but I feel like some detail is missing on this somewhere.. resembles a 1970 truck but just didn't turn out ( to me) great.. just okay.. LOL Cut from Cherry using Pegas MG #3 Anyway, pick it apart.. tell me what I should have done to make it better.. BTW.. this is just dipped in Danish oil.. waiting a few days before spraying a topcoat on.. Okay, so.. I forgot I just did this custom order too.. just seen the pictures ( last 3 photos ) on my computer when opening the file for the 1970 truck.. the other set of pictures is of a 1986 truck order that I just mailed out 3 days ago.. and forgot already that I did that one too.. Old Age? LOL

Glad you and your granddaughter get to spend that quality time together. She will indeed treasure those items you and she create as well as the memories themselves and will take those skills with her throughout her life. she did an excellent job on her spidy box..

  32. I hit the wrong number keys on the time to cut the letters. It did not take anywhere near 68 minutes, it should read 8 minutes. how embarrassing.. a first time cutter could do this project in less time than that. Dick heppnerguy

  37. It wasn't about the finished item.. it was about a test of the scrap wood I had gotten. Not something I was interested in ever keeping.. not worth the touching up.. I knew when I painted it that that it would not turn out very well, not letting the paint dry Dick heppnerguy

Hi Pete: The people in Arizona probably haven't seen a windmill up close This is your opportunity to start a new fad. Put one up where you are and see how people react to it - Sales could be good for you Just a thought Fab4

  43. The cutting looks good. We now assign you the (un)official world record for fastest scroll saw cutting! BTW, I use parchment paper (non-stick paper for baking) as a backer when I glue or paint. Nothing sticks to it. The only negative is that any overspray comes off along with the painted object and you have to trim the excess.

  44. They are fun and easy to do but may I suggest that maybe next time you put the darker color at the back, I learnt from my mistakes. Marg

  46. Regardless of how fast you cut, it turned out pretty darn good. I've had a couple instances where the paint became stuck while gluing. I just sprayed a little paint in the cap and used a brush to touch it up.

    Excelsior XL-30/100

Adjustable blade aggression and smooth as can be and very quiet. Not a lot of front table room and the dust collector could use a better design. Love the adjustable hold down foot and throat length. The long heavy arm does wear your shoulder and back out after an 8 hour day cutting. Its worth the money though. Until you have to make repairs to all that linkage. Good saw though.

    DeWalt DW788

Purchased a 788 second hand that is a type 1. Had to look hide and low for one that was reasonableness. Doubt is has had any maintenance and appears to have been used for metal cutting. Did an acceptance inspection on it and realized the blade is tilted slightly. Not too concerned of it being off 1/16 to 1/32 off. Blade is set aggressively forward. Can be fixed by a shim in the back of the table, but in the short time I have had it, I am liking the aggressiveness. I am upgrading from a circa 1990 craftsman 13 inch with two speeds (off and on) to this and it is a dream come true. Very smooth and once I tried it out, I had to verify that it was even on. The blade was moving, but barely heard the motor. Glad I upgraded to this. Hendo

    DeWalt DW788

Bought the saw in November 2017 and had it repaired in August. Shop told me parts loosened up and needed several bearings. I guess it’s ok for light duty. Never cut wood more then 3/4 inch. Since I got repaired it has been working so well that my rating is five stars. The authorized repair shop was a hardware store in the area near where I live. Awesome repair and came back in perfect shape. Hopefully it remains in great shape for years to come, just keeping my fingers crossed.
