  1. A good friend of mine is a die hard fan. Each October, he starts planning the parade and the party for the next Stanley Cup finals. By January, he is down to when the Liefs make the playoffs. We joke all the time about when the Leafs are going to win another Championship. I made this with a white board for the year. If they ever do, he can whip out the year and the pen is there. I just hope the pen has not dried out by then.

This is a Grampa pattern I finished this weekend. Double stack Oak and Maple 1/4 ply with 1/4 pine ply backer. The Maple piece was stained with Minwax Colonial Pine as well as the Maple frame. The Oak piece was stained with Minwax Natural and the Oak frame was stained with Minwax Red Oak. Both were sprayed with 5 coats of clear gloss and lightly sanded between coats. I used Pegas 2/0 and 0 spiral blades. Approximate size is 11X14. It was a fun project and thanks to Grampa for the pattern.

  4. I can't remember if I posted this pic before or told the story 2008 at St Mary's Primary School's end of year concert, one of the teachers squeezing between the lectern and the wall of the stage uttered "I'm glad I've got my, Suck me in knickers on" to another teacher. The problem was, the mic was also on, and around 600 parents and students also heard. Hence the "Wood Duck" Award was born. It is given to a teacher when they make an embarrassing (Humorous) comment.

    Stagecoach

This is the Jim Blume stagecoach I've been working on. The darker one is 1/4 Oak ply and the lighter one is 1/4 Birch ply They were cut by stacking and using Pegas 2/0 spiral blades. I lost count on the number of blades. My upper arm does not lift and the pieces are so large I would inevitably bend the blade when trying to feed them which eventually caused them to break. The Oak was finished with Minwax Colonial Pine stain while the Birch was finished with Minwax Natural stain. Both have a 1/4 Birch ply backer painted black. Each also has six coats of clear with light sanding with 600 grit between coats. Both frames are pre-made framing material. The darker of the two originally had a rough gray finish. I gave it a light sanding and then covered it with Minwax Espresso stain. I then gave it 2 coats of clear. The lighter one is Maple stained with Minwax Natural and also has two coats of clear. Both frames have shim splines in the corners to add strength. Total time including the frames I have about 40 hours in these pieces but I feel they were worth every minute. Thanks again to Jim Blume for a fantastic pattern! By the way, the reason the Oak piece is facing the opposite direction is because I messed up when I stacked them and put the finish side face down rather than face up.

  8. Thanks to Jim for these great patterns......It's been so hot that I have been unable to spend any time scrolling out in the garage, so I thought I would give watercolor pencils a try. The projects were previously triple stacked cut with # 3 and # 1 fd scroll reverse blades and I used Arteza 48 count watercolor pencils. Also, I Just want to say that I visit this website frequently and I have been inspired by and in awe of the wonderful group of talented scrollers that populate this site. Thanks to all..... Any and all critiques welcome.....forrest

  11. The bolt that you adjust the tension no to adjust how hard it is to raise and lower the arm, has a little metal bearing in it that runs against a piece of medal... You might test the status of it and maybe that little ball bearing is worn.

    Hi from Colorado

Hi, this is Jerry a Native of Colorado. Grew up on the farm, served our country as Air Force navigator in cargo aircraft, retired as a computer programmer and now live in Arvada, CO. I have no regrets, but there are a couple of things I wish I has done. I like to do fret work on the scroll saw.

  14. We are blessed to have our 13 year old grand daughter spend a week with us. I am in heaven when she asks to spend time with me in my shop learning a new scrolling technique. She did just about everything herself on this Spiderman box. She is definitely a perfectionist.

    Excalibur Issue(s)

I have a EX-21. It's only a few years old. I don't do a lot of scroll work but I decided to make a couple trivets and I'm having issues. It seems like lifting the arm has gotten quite a bit harder (mid-project) to do and there is a metal on metal scraping noise when I left it. No scraping sound when it's lowered. I've never had it apart. I have no clue what goes on inside a saw like this. It is always indoors in a humidity controlled space. I don't know if there is anything else I can add that would help? I can take a short video if that would help. I hope one of you fine individuals can help me sort it out. TIA

  19. HERE IS MY, FUN DAYS SCROLL SAW CHALLENGE FOR AUGUST........................ I have found scrollers are very serious about scrolling. Sometimes you have to lighten up and make a few FUN, silly projects. Pigs really can fly you know! There is NO painting, except for the edges, in doing this project. Art work for this project was done on a sheet of paper using COP/C dual-tip, alcohol base markers. A copy of the artwork was made, cut out and glued to the wood. A light clear top coat was added. It is almost impossible to see that the art work was glued on. DID YOU SMILE? JAN

One of the good sides to making a kit is it makes it a lot easier to ship it. No special boxes and it pretty much eliminates breakage too. Dick heppnerguy

Thanks! That is the idea and would be simple enough to cut! I would still like to see the tree being held off to the side much like the ones that are holding a shovel or a sign. Don't get me wrong I do appreciate the help and the ones that have been posted will most likely be cut! Thanks everyone for your help! Erv

You’ve cut two beautiful pieces. I would love to have either one of these hanging on my wall. I’ve considered cutting this pattern because I think it’s a remarkable pattern, but seeing it cut makes me even more excited to do it. Thanks for showing us.

  31. I'm not sure what that would be. I checked them on my iPhone and iPad and they seemed fine. You can check to see if it has nigh mode turned on? Maybe it's not converting the black text to white on a dark backrougnd. that's the only thing I can think of.

Thanks Paul. I started to do one with and the other without. When I did the first one (with the matting size backer) I liked it so well I went ahead and did the second the same way. The trick is gluing the cutting to the larger backing making sure it is square and centered.

Thanks John. I'm partial to the top (Maple) also. It does have more of a satin finish than the gloss on the bottom, even though it was sprayed with the same product. I've found that you can hold a little farther away when spraying and give a "mist" rather than a heavy soaking will leave a slightly satin finish. I liked the pattern from the Maple in the frame and didn't want the glare of light from a gloss finish to distract from the grain.

I am Kicking around the idea of cutting them and selling some as a kit for the buyer to assemble. 1. it would give the buyer, who might like them and isnt a scroller to take on a fun task. 2. It might be seen as a rather fun little gift 3. It would make shipping easy and inexpensive for me. 4. The cost would be super inexpensive for me too. Dick heppnerguy

Thanks so much, Paul. That means a lot coming from you. The upper arm on the WEN I'm using couldn't be altered. The frame itself is a fixed solid piece that runs from the lower arm, along the back, and then along the upper arm. Another issue I had with this piece is the size. The table is rather small and I had to set up a table to hold one end of the piece while cutting. I used one of those old type stools with the screw seat and adjusted it up to the appropriate height. I'd have to swing the piece off the stool to lower one end so I could feed the blade. My little WEN does a pretty good job and I would highly recommend it for someone wanting to dabble in scrolling to see if it is something they would enjoy. For just over $100, it can hardly be beat. The only problems I've had is the blade clamps which I now buy a half dozen at a time, and the blower bellows which splits after about 10 hours of use. I replaced it once before going to a fish tank bubbler. WEN also offers a 2-year warranty which I consider pretty good for an entry level saw. My goal is to purchase either a Pegas or Seyco. If I could get my money right I would probably go with that new 30-inch Pegas... although I like the larger table on the Seyco. I encourage you to give this pattern a go. Yes, it's challenging, but very rewarding. Like I mentioned, it took me about 40-hours including the frame but that was on my WEN. I'm sure someone on a saw with an arm that would lift would be much faster switching holes and it would take less time. There were only about 3 or 4 areas that I though were vulnerable so I just placed a piece of blue tape over the areas and continued cutting.

    Filling Time

When I was doing the finish on my stagecoach project I wanted something to cut while the stains, finishes or glue was drying. This is an 8 1/2 X 11 pattern by Grampa that I double stack cut using 1/4 Maple and 1/4 Oak ply. The Maple was finished with Minwax Colonial Pine stain and finished with 5 coats of clear gloss spray sanded between cuts. The Oak was finished with Minwax Natural stain and also has 5 coats of clear gloss spray. Something I did a little different is I sprayed the Birch backer with flat black rather than my typical gloss black. Both frames are pre-manufactured framing material that I cut to size. I used a Pegas 0 spiral blade. This was a lot of fun to cut after the more demanding requirements of the stagecoach. Thanks Grampa!

Very well done. Nicely cut, finished and framed. Overall presentation is absolutely beautiful. Like others, I like the lower one just a tiny bit better. You might consider using 1/8 material when stack cutting and using small blades. Just a little easier too handle. I also dimple my drill holes on the back side with my dremel tool to make feeding the blade through eaiser. But I still kink and break a lot of 2/0 spiral blades when cutting projects like these. That is why I buy them by the gross.
