    Two More Horses

These are a couple of more horse patterns I converted in to a Scroll Saw pattern from images I found on-line. I needed these to fill out my Horse Theme. Both are 1/8” BB ply positive cuttings, hand painted and affixed to a hand painted 1/4” BB Ply Backers. Both Cut with Pegas #1 MGT R blades. And, as usual, the assembled panels were protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. And with keeping of the theme, the Frames are 1 ¾” wide distress Poplar stained with Minwax Early American and finished with multiple coats of Spray Satin Poly. High Stepping 11” x 12” Horse and Horseshoe 11” x 11” Comments and critique always welcome.

    More birdhouses

This has been an off and on project for a while. Can't get anything but poplar in square stock locally, so I gave a few of these a baptism in various stains I had on hand. The birds are not meant to be copies of actual species, but rather inspirations. Some are just because I like the color. I just paint them as a way to pass time and keep my eyes and hands busy. Patterns from the talented Diana Thompson, who I hope might occasionally look at scrollsaw sites even though she has closed up shop.

    Cat on the Throne

Another fun image I found and just had to convert to a scroll saw 11”x14” pattern. Although the image was a simple B&W line image, my brain said ‘color’. However, it turned out to be a lot harder to make it a color project then I expected. It sat around my painting area for over three weeks before I finally decided on how I thought I wanted it to look. I first tried to color just the backer, but it just did not read well. So, I wound up hand painting both the backer and cut panel with Artist Acrylics. I'm not sure I did it justice, but my Lady thinks it came out good, so I'm happy. The Cut panel is 5/32” solid Core Maple affixed to a 1/4” BB Ply Backer. Most of cutting was done with Pegas #1 MGT R blades while a few of the small areas was done with #2/0 MGT R blades. After painting and assembly, the panel was protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. The frame is 1 3/4” wide Poplar finished with Rust-OLeum Black Lacquer. Comments and critique always welcome.

George Clooney as Everett ; John Turturro as Pete Hogwallop ; Tim Blake Nelson asDelmar ----From, "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" I wanted to do a cutting of this and while looking for a good picture to start with I ran across a black and white image made for printing tee shirts and such. I bought the file and was able to make it scrollable with a little editing. 1/2" oak about 8" X 10"

  12. Hopefully they are completed to somebody,s specs, lol. They were great fun watching them come together these past few days. I need the room as there is no place to set a cup of copy on, unless it's on the scroll saw. It's always waiting for something to reside on it!!!

  13. Seems very strange (Tight) that the warranty will not be honoured when according to the "horse", all some have is a minor scratch or a stripped screw that has been replaced. Not much faith in their product (or repairer)

Rodney, you are not going to believe this, but I did all of the above with the exception of hand sanding. What I usually do is place the piece on a non slip drawer liner then using a ROS on slow to medium speed let it float over the cutting. I reckon that another thing that contributed was the paper disk was rather thick and where the holes had been punched, it was uneven. Not an excuse as the cutting was very fine, just another brick in the wall.

I must learn to not rely on memory when I haven't cut a pattern for a while. I have this habit of altering them as I cut or just prior to cutting I will study pattern and mark in bridges and alteration with a pencil.. As this one had been pasted down and ready to go for so long, I just grabbed it and cut away. I should actually go to the patterns on the computer and make the alterations, then this wouldn't happen, well less chance of it anyway

Been there, done that, John. I keep a bottle of super glue handy in case I find a piece that is weak or breaks out. If it is weak, I'll put a drop of super glue in the weak area and then spread it a little with a dental probe. If it is broken out completely, I'll fit it as best I can and put a little piece of tape over it until I finish cutting or get ready to glue to the backer. The tape reminds me where I need to be careful. If it needs sanding, I'll do it by hand and sometimes hold it in place with that same dental probe while giving it a light brush with sandpaper. However, if you REALLY need firewood.....

    Hi from Colorado

Hi, this is Jerry a Native of Colorado. Grew up on the farm, served our country as Air Force navigator in cargo aircraft, retired as a computer programmer and now live in Arvada, CO. I have no regrets, but there are a couple of things I wish I has done. I like to do fret work on the scroll saw.

  21. Nice job cutting, Danny. When I hear someone mention Elvis, that is how I remember him. He was my sister's heartthrob. Every time a movie he was in would come out, we would all go to the drive-in and watch it. Memorable days many, many years ago. Thanks for sharing.

Yep, I'm glad I'm not still 18 Marg. A few spanners went flying of into the paddock, never to be found again, when working on my car and they slipped and my knuckles got barked I've learnt a "Little" patience, just swore and binned them . I'll do them again, because I really like the pattern and You may not believe this, but I don't have any of my cuttings, so I was going to keep one and hang.

  38. I'd be more apt. to buy a lightly used Excalibur in the $3 - 500 range locally and buy Pegas clamps. At least that way I'm able to "try" before I buy.. same warranty less investment.

  39. I'm amazed they offer a 2 year on a new saw but nothing on the refurb.. I think I'd stay away from it. The way it's worded to me is "out of warranty" meaning older than 2 years since it was sold? I'm not sure but I feel it is a bit pricey if it's "out of warranty" and they don't want to stand behind the product that had been repaired, even if it was just a 30 30 - 60 days etc..

Sorry that happen but it does. I stack cut this picture of a moose in two 1/8" thick pieces. When I completed them, I noticed I had not gotten the pattern centered on the perfectly. So I took one to my table saw and decided I would carefully cut the wood to line up with picture. The minute the saw blade touched the wood the picture blew up in so many tiny pieces, I felt I was getting rained on... Lucky I didn't have wood shrapnel wounds...

    Door Hanger

I knocked this little project out this week doing a little cutting before work. It is a modified Steve Good pattern made from 1/4 Birch ply stained with Minwax Natural stain and the backer is 1/4 underlayment material stained Minwax Espresso. I will probably tape a white cardboard piece behind the mountains to give them the snowcap look. It was cut using Pegas #2/0 R MGT blades. The dragonfly just happened to be checking out the piece when I took the photo.

  48. Thanks for all the answers to my topic. I forget that where I live we don't have to separate the todo list into summer and winter projects. I was mostly worried that all the violent weather may have adversely effected the lives of those in the storm states. Glad to hear that nobody was in peril.

  49. Probably about half of my tools were bought as refurbished. I've had great luck with them. IF I was in the market for a Pegas I wouldn't be scared of no warranty because anytime I've had a tool that has failed under warranty I just fixed it myself anyway.. The one time I did have a tool repaired under warranty it was put back together wrong and didn't work right until I took it apart and corrected it anyway and I was without the tool for like 7-8 weeks so why take the fuss of them having it for weeks and messing up something else anyway.. I guess some folks get lucky with it. The lower price point I dive in thinking I may have to buy parts and do a repair just as I would with any used tool purchase, the point of buying at a low enough price that you may end up putting some money in it and hope to still have save some money off original cost. A new motor is probably the most expensive part.. I'm guessing about $300 for one.. don't hear of a lot of motor issues with them but it does happen. IF I were buying a new Pegas I'd go with that refub and chance it that I'm saving $180 or whatever it is.. I've had my Excalibur apart several times.. not a lot to these saws in my opinion other than the electronics can be pricey but easy to change. My issue with the no warranty is if it's failed to be checked out good and I get a some that don't work at all.. I take the no warranty as in not returnable.. so if I was to buy it and right off the bat out of the box it don't work.. then what? I feel like they should have a short warrantee period and stand behind the product at least for a 30 day period. If it's not going to be stood behind at all then it should be sold as used and at a used price.. like.. $400 - 600 ish at most.. According to Bearwood's email back to me if it just had a scratch or a stripped bolt that was corrected.. why won't they stand behind the product just the same as a new one?
