  1. Just finished this Russ Beard pattern, I have some thoughts as to how I want to make the framing etc. But for now the hard work has been done. cut on a modified Wen Scroll Saw with my own design pin less blade adaptor and blade holder, the entire pattern was cut using a Niqua #0 blades.

    Cat on the Throne

Another fun image I found and just had to convert to a scroll saw 11”x14” pattern. Although the image was a simple B&W line image, my brain said ‘color’. However, it turned out to be a lot harder to make it a color project then I expected. It sat around my painting area for over three weeks before I finally decided on how I thought I wanted it to look. I first tried to color just the backer, but it just did not read well. So, I wound up hand painting both the backer and cut panel with Artist Acrylics. I'm not sure I did it justice, but my Lady thinks it came out good, so I'm happy. The Cut panel is 5/32” solid Core Maple affixed to a 1/4” BB Ply Backer. Most of cutting was done with Pegas #1 MGT R blades while a few of the small areas was done with #2/0 MGT R blades. After painting and assembly, the panel was protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. The frame is 1 3/4” wide Poplar finished with Rust-OLeum Black Lacquer. Comments and critique always welcome.

    '35 Ford

I made the pattern for this from a photo that I found online. It took about 16 hours to cut. I chose this because my first "car" was a 1935 Ford pick-up.

  7. Hi, thanks for the add! I have been woodworking for 30 years and for the past few years have fancied giving scrolling a try but have never found the time. Well times change and by chance I stumbled upon a old scrollsaw but in surprisingly good condition. It's a RBI 226vs ( square bottom blade holder and a DC motor manufactured by Dayton, which from what I've read is a Ultra made between 1994-1996) it was covered in a layer of dust. I parted with $100 and took it home and gave it a thorough clean and a coat of wax, oiled the rear cam and tested it out. It runs quietly with no vibration. I've ordered the blower lockline kit for it and some new knobs as the upper blade holder knob is cracked. Got about $150 in it now and some time, I feel like this could be a good start to a new hobby! Now I just have to practice lol

  8. This is such a sweet careing employee. She listens earnestly to what's being said and responds with body language that is so cute to see.crap oak flooring waste that had voids in it I wasn,t expecting. Dollar 25 store acryilic paint that is so thin and missing pigment I found that the only way to paint with it is flood it on and I used the other end of the paint brush to apply it. Thanks for looking!!! 10" x 4"

    Brandi Carlile

I imagine Brandi will be someone many aren't familiar with. My son introduces me to a lot of good music that I would miss without him. He took me to a Brandi concert several years ago and I've been a fan since then. For those not familiar with United States currency, the coin in the upper left is a wheat penny. They were discontinued in 1958 but you'll still find one in your change from time to time. If you'd like to know why I included it, check out the video below.

    Stagecoach

This is the Jim Blume stagecoach I've been working on. The darker one is 1/4 Oak ply and the lighter one is 1/4 Birch ply They were cut by stacking and using Pegas 2/0 spiral blades. I lost count on the number of blades. My upper arm does not lift and the pieces are so large I would inevitably bend the blade when trying to feed them which eventually caused them to break. The Oak was finished with Minwax Colonial Pine stain while the Birch was finished with Minwax Natural stain. Both have a 1/4 Birch ply backer painted black. Each also has six coats of clear with light sanding with 600 grit between coats. Both frames are pre-made framing material. The darker of the two originally had a rough gray finish. I gave it a light sanding and then covered it with Minwax Espresso stain. I then gave it 2 coats of clear. The lighter one is Maple stained with Minwax Natural and also has two coats of clear. Both frames have shim splines in the corners to add strength. Total time including the frames I have about 40 hours in these pieces but I feel they were worth every minute. Thanks again to Jim Blume for a fantastic pattern! By the way, the reason the Oak piece is facing the opposite direction is because I messed up when I stacked them and put the finish side face down rather than face up.

  11. As mentioned it is likely the rheostat. Sometimes they get a bad spot in them from being used in the same spot always. Turning it back and forth sometimes help, but it will likely need blown/cleaned out or replaced. Digikey is a good place to source parts like that.

  14. It's possible that the rheostat/controller may be dirty or some of the windings internally may be worn. There are postings "rheostat" that may help.

    Hello from Illinois

Welcome to the Village from North Carolina. I've only been scrolling about a year and a half and have learned lots from the kind members of this forum. I purchased an entry level saw and "hope" to one day soon upgrade. Sounds like you got a really nice saw for less than I paid for my entry level. Anyway, if you're like the rest of us, you'll find that scrolling is addictive. Be sure to post pictures of your projects. That encourages us to get off the computer and back on the saw.

  27. T How does one go about cleaning the rheostat? And where is it? Sorry I’m kind of dumb when it comes to mechanical crap. Good question Ray! I have no idea if it’s Chinese or not. I bought it off Craig’s list 6 years ago. It maybe had 5 hours on when I bought it. How can I find out if it’s the Chinese or earlier saw?

    Stagecoach

Thanks Freddie. I use spray clear gloss aerosol for my finish. Usually about six coats with light sanding with 600 grit between coats. When I spray, I spray from all four sides to get into all the little nooks and crannies. I keep the piece I'm spraying flat to prevent any runs. I did not prep the birch with a sealer. I use a rag to wipe it on and do this pretty quickly. I then take a dry rag and wipe it off which, as been my experience, removes any blotching. I do not glue the artwork to the frame. Once I glue the frame itself together, I cut slots and add splines to the corners of the frame. after sanding the splines down I finish the frame if it is not a pre-finished frame. In the pictures above, the top piece has a pre-finished frame. The bottom, Maple, I stained with Natural to help bring out the grain. Both frames were sprayed with the clear with sanding between coats. After the frame and piece have cured, I attach the piece to the frame using a Logan Point Driver. Hopefully this answers your questions. If not, don't hesitate to ask.

    The Soggy Bottom Boys

George Clooney as Everett ; John Turturro as Pete Hogwallop ; Tim Blake Nelson asDelmar ----From, "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" I wanted to do a cutting of this and while looking for a good picture to start with I ran across a black and white image made for printing tee shirts and such. I bought the file and was able to make it scrollable with a little editing. 1/2" oak about 8" X 10"

  30. It was recently posted that the most expensive vehicle to operate in the U.S. is the shopping cart at Costco.

    Printer ?

Kev, when you get the "out of toner" warning give my video a look. The printers count the number of print jobs and at a certain number they think they're outta ink. Do a reset and keep on going. Like I said, I'm sti on my starter cartridge.

  39. Nice job cutting, Danny. When I hear someone mention Elvis, that is how I remember him. He was my sister's heartthrob. Every time a movie he was in would come out, we would all go to the drive-in and watch it. Memorable days many, many years ago. Thanks for sharing.

    Printer ?

The Epson ET-16600 Ink jet is a good choice. Has ink tanks and can print up to Super B ( 13"x19"). Not cheap but is a great printer. I purchased mine from Office Max. Might want to check it out.

  48. Off topic slightly. I've had a few saws. When I 1st found forums regarding scroll sawing, the go to saw was the Dewalt. I lusted after one, but none in Oz. after a few years I came across Dewalt Factory reconditioned tools. and I forked over the cash. got it landed at home cheaper than the US retail price and it's still going after 15+ years. Some times you do hit a boundary.
