It was a struggle
keefie and 13 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I purchased this pattern from Charles Hand and was unable to receive it in a download. I contacted him and he worked with me on trying to get it to me for several days. After several ideas, I finally thought to have him try to send me the pattern through another of my web pages and I finally got it today. I had to work hard to get the layers to their close sizes as I was only able to get the pattern as screen shots before today, and had to try and get as close a match to the correct sizes by printing and changes until I was OK and cut it. It is 8 layers and one I could not quite understand what the size was supposed to be so I left that one out of this project. Again I tried to paint it to help bring out the layers better. I will have to cut this again in the future and get it all correct next time. Dick heppnerguy14 points -

After several days of contemplation mixed with terror, I tried artist brushes and acrylic but hated it, I tried 'foam rollers' too but after the first touch I chickened out . So I cut a piece of kitchen sponge and used Rustoleum paint. I wiped on a thin coat of paint over the letters being very careful to work from the inside - out and when that dried I used the same sponge to 'dab' paint all over. I didn't know if it would work as it seems like nothing the 'professionals' do but I don't think it turned out that badly3 points

I have Pegas blade clamps on my saw and I was having a bad episode of 'Hockey sticks" On close examination I saw that the slot between the screw clamp and the anvil bolt was not allowing the blade to be clamped centrally. I cut and filed the slot deeper so that the blade was clamped in the centre and I have never had a hockey stick since.3 points

I cut 2x4 with #3 and #5 reverse tooth blades. In my experience the chatter comes mostly for cutting to fast.3 points

Well after a busy weekend I finally got free time to try another cut, I feel like I went backwards on this one .... Rushing maybe? Maybe a good sanding will help... Thinking of giving it a coat of paint if it tidies up ok. I guess that this will wrap up this thread and I'll put in some hours practicing and making fire wood lol.3 points -
Compound cutting question
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to jerry walters for a topic
Before asking my question I want to thank you for your kind and helpful comments welcoming me to the scroll saw village. Because of your comments I have gotten hooked on General Scroll Sawing section. Read one then another and before I know is't bedtime. I don't even like to read. Again, thanks for welcoming me. I mostly do fret work on 1/4 and 1/2 wood, but have been thinking about compound cutting. Since this is new to me I thought I would try a simple design on a pine 2x4, juse a simple car outline. I have a Pegas scroll saw and used a Flying Duthman # 12 SR blade. I found the cutting pretty hard and had quite a bit of chatter. I determined the chatter was caused by the reverse teeth. but don't know for sure. I would on occasion get chatter while cutting on 1/4 and 1/2 wood, but thought it was just me. I read Shelia Landry's post on how to get a more aggressive cut, but since I am not mechanically inclined, I'm afraid to try it. Maybe I'm using the wrong blade. Any suggestion you have will be greatly appreciated. I'm guessing this question has been asked before, if so, my apology for asking again. Jerry2 points -

Congratulations on a project well done. It looks perfect once the pattern is removed. that is one of the nice things about scrolling is it is difficult to determine if you went off the line after the pattern is removed, unless you went quite a bit off the line and then went too quickly to get back on, then it leaves a very noticeable jagged line. Thank you for your kind words Dick. Much appreciated. Here's a link to a video that a friend of mine made. It's a sign on a smaller scale but the principle's the same.2 points

In all the years I've been scrolling, even in the days where there were only hand saws....the largest blade I have ever used is a #5. But for compound cutting do usually use a skip tooth blade. They can be agressive and clean out the sawdust as you go...2 points

I think Cherokee is cheaper than Ocooch by the time you pay the shipping fee.. I buy mine locally but during the lockdowns 2 years ago I ordered from Cherokee and I got very good quality ply.. There prices include shipping so don't be sticker shocked with the prices.. They send me my wood and it was on my porch within 3-4 days.. I haven't price checked them since early spring this year but at that time they was cheaper than Ocooch once shipping was calculated. It's always tempting for me to just order online because by the time I take a few hours out of the day to run to my local source and then I still have to break the 5' x 5' sheet down to blanks.. It probably works out close to the same with the wear on the table saw and blades etc. So I always check prices before buying.. just have a hard time not buying local and supporting my local shop..2 points

smaller blade would be my suggestion. Check out Steve Goode for a compound cutting jig it helps.2 points

Wow, Dick! You did a fantastic job on that. All those smooth cuts have to be pretty precise or they would stand out like a sore thumb. Everything looks smooth and even. I'm sure with some of those thinner pieces it could be very fragile. Again, excellent job!2 points -

Well I put my parts on my saw this morning and decided to try it out. I wanted to try something simple as this was my first time using a scroll saw. Knocked up this pattern in inkspace with a font I liked taped it up and went at it! Next time I'll make the outline in grey and thinner as the blade was hard to see in the black. I mostly kept to the line (but they are only a suggestion right) but the s has a few flatspots on it ( I'm presuming I'm turning without feeding?) Kind of embarrassing after seeing what you guys turn out but realize we all have to start somewhere. Thanks for all the positive input on my posts so far ( I know the new guy can be anoying ) and any constructive criticism is appreciated if it's going to improve my work, it needs it Thanks for looking !1 point -
Beautiful piece, Brenda! Might I suggest also painting the outside raised section as well to give it a border appearance.1 point

You might want to check with your local library to see it they have them in the system. My library is a member of hoopla. On line reading library. I searched to scroll puzzles and there were a few there. It gives you a chance to review the book and to make sure you want to buy. You can not download the patterns or print out directly but there are ways around it if you want to spend the time.1 point -
I have sent them an email so we will see if anything comes of it. Stay tuned. Marg1 point

It's pretty ridiculous, the shipping some companies try and get away with Marg. I try very hard to buy Australian made and found a place that had socks for about $9.00 a pair. U-beaut I thought, I'll get 5 pair for myself and couple of pairs for For Dad, Brother, sons and Grandson. but when I got to the postage, I sure changed my mind pretty quick. 15 pairs of socks and $80.00 postage I may still be wet behind the ears, but I never came down in the last shower1 point

In today's episode of "Why Does Scott Take 110 Breeds of Dog to Every Event?"... Yesterday I sold 13 puzzles and 4 leash holders. Of the 13 puzzles, 9 of them were dogs, and 4 of them were the "less popular breeds" but because I had them on hand, they were virtually a guaranteed sale as dog owners go crazy when you have their unusual breed as they never see them anywhere else. Some weeks I may not sell any oddballs, but over the course of a season it adds up to dozens of extra sales. Pointer Chessie Ridgeback Cattledog And I got asked for one I didn't have (which is rare) but next week I'll have 111 breeds with me when I add the Keeshond to my herd.1 point

I see nothing wrong with your first cut. In fact, I think it is pretty darn good! If you are familiar with Inkscape, I might suggest putting the cut lines in red and your pattern fill in a light gray. I set my stroke (lines) at .009 of an inch and try to split the line when I'm cutting. If you drift off the line, don't try to jump back onto the line quickly. Gradually work your way back toward the line. As Darryl (Ctutor) said, a light also helps. I have a lighted magnifier that makes the lines look huge and makes them much easier to follow. When I sometimes look around the magnifier straight at the pattern, I think to myself, darn those are really thin lines. Keep up the good work. You'll be jumping on some major fretwork very soon.1 point -
