Dragonflies
heppnerguy and 7 others reacted to barb.j.enders for a topic
Super happy with how these turned out. Alex Fox pattern that I shrank to 80%. Left the backer piece off. Finished with Tung Oil. Shadow box frames were free and missing the backer. Used foam core as the backer. The backer on the dragonfly is rainbow scrapbooking paper (from my mom's stock). The boarder is another type of scrapbooking paper. One is pale green and the other is a blue. Took the photos outside so, unfortunately, the reflection is in the way.8 points -

Drum Sander vs Planner?
OCtoolguy and 2 others reacted to Woodmaster1 for a topic
I have both a planer and a drum sander that I bought from Johnson’s Workbench. I planning on going to the Wood Expo at Johnson’s in a few weeks and take advantage of the good deals.3 points -
material cost + (hours worked x say $15 or how much you consider your time is worth) + desired profit, say maybe 1000% (or maybe more realalistily 10%). I'm happy when I can recoup my material costs, but that is just me.3 points

Jim, you are asking a serial "that;s too cheap, not enough" bloke here. That's what my daughter and missus continually tell me, I have even had customers buy an item and throw another $5 or $10 in as they say I never charged enough.2 points
-
The inner timer put in by the manufacturer of item with a warrantee, that tell the item when it can fail,, usually set and warrantee period, + one day... mine was a mistake went 3 months longer than it was suppose to.. I guess I should be thankful for the extra time.2 points

Dust collection
scrollingforsanity reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
Age is A good consideration at how long you will use it. The other point with age is health. The scrollsaw makes a lot of very fine dust which is the most harmful and a good real HEPA vac protects my lungs. I do not like just blowing the dust away as the fine dust will float a long time. I could wear a N95 or N100 mask but I find these difficult to deal with. Before I retired, we had to wear N100 masks most of the time and they are tiring.1 point -

Dust collection
scrollingforsanity reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
It's weird but now, at 79, I look at many things I'd love to have but then I step back and ask myself just how much use I'd get with the few years I have left. I look for deals on used equipment and if I find something at a price that fits my age I'll buy it.1 point -
I just started making a Sue Mey multi layer nativity. It has 4 layers 3mm BB. It is not as smooth as I like so I cut the 8" W x 60" long strips put 220 paper on my drum sander and one light pass on each side and done. I would rather be cutting and building than spending hours sanding.1 point

To a certain extent, but unless you use a push stick you are still pushing in direct line with the blade, especially considering that band saws in cabinet shops are not only used for cutting thin material. They are mostly used for cutting uneven shapes. Before gauntlets and cut proof gloves, you rarely saw a butcher with 10 fingers and most were lost on a Band Saw. Sadly the same with Wood Machinists, the band saw and overhead shapers loved fingers.1 point
-
John, if the upper blade guide height is adjusted to the thickness of the wood wouldn’t that effectively act as a blade guard?1 point
-
Nice and bright. I can imagine having that on a stall would be an attraction.1 point
-
I believe, there are two reasons. One the blade is not guarded, Two, A band saw will not kick you hand away, it tends to grab and pull. Even when doing my apprenticeship in the early 70's when safety was not so much a priority (Safety Glass's, ear protection belt guards not required) you would never see a circular saw that was not fitted with a proper guard in cabinet shop, unlike most DIYr's who seem to discard the guard. I have see a few accidents with a circular saw, thankfully none to serious, I have seen one with a band saw, finger and thumb almost surgically removed and two with buzzers, tips of fingers lost. It was common teaching, that the band saw is the most dangerous machine.1 point

I use a Festool CT26 on my scroll saw and it goes on and off with the saw. I having been using it for more than five years and no problems. Most of my scrolling is puzzles or Intarsia so I do not turn it on and off like those doing fretwork. I have it plumbed with dust pickups above and below the table and does a good job.1 point -
If my wife tells me that she has to pick out a few birthday cards when we go shopping, I stay home. I've spent too much time leaning on the shopping cart waiting for her to do that. Not any more.1 point
