    Pedro's Mantel Clock

My wife said we need a mantel clock and found one on Pedro's Web site finescrollsaw.com. Contacted him and he send me a PDF file after I purchased. It all went very smoothly. Took it to my local UPS store and were able to print it on card stock using A6 paper format dimensions. 12" x 17" I wanted to do it in Bubinga but my wife wanted a lighter color, so I went with oak. I used 3.5 pieces of 5.5 x 48" 1/4" oak. I did modify the top from the original pattern so that the top was narrower than the piece below it. I also added a 1/8" shim between to bottom and next piece up. I also rounded the extention pieces on the base plate. Finish in Gloss Lacquer.

  2. After cutting the 'peace sign' pattern of Charles Hand and really appreciated all of his efforts when I had trouble downloading the peace sign. After all the time he gave me, I remembered Charles Hand had another of his patterns on the front of the last Scroll saw magazine so I decided to give it a go also. I have a granddaughter that had a racoon for a pet several years ago and decided to make it for her for Christmas as a reminder of that time in her life when she found the little racoon outside her home. If you also have the magazine, you might want to give it a try, I used a #2 spiral Peg as blade and cut it with a 1/4 inch Baltic Birch ply. enjoyed cutting it and found it quite challenging too. 3. Border Collie and Sheep finished Monday, August 22, 2022. The pattern is by Jaeheon Yun and found in the book "20 Minute Scroll Saw Puzzles". I used 3/4" Poplar about 8" x 12". Cut on the Pegas scroll saw using Pegas #5R MGT blades. After sanding with a Mac Mop, dipped in diluted Shellac and lightly sanded again. Comments welcome.

    Heart Coaster

Heart Coaster finished Monday, August 22, 2022. The pattern is by Charles Hand and found in the book "Circular Scroll Saw Designs". I enlarged the pattern so that it is a trivet or wall hanger. I used 3/4" Hard Maple about 8" x 8". Cut on the Pegas scroll saw using Pegas #1R MGT blades. I used #1R MGT blades to see how they would cut 3/4" Hard Maple. Very impressed. After sanding with a Mac Mop, dipped in diluted Shellac and lightly sanded again. Two coats of MinWax Lacquer clear gloss. Comments welcome.

    My Latest

Well here s my Little Haunted House. It is a pattern from an old Quilt I found yrs back. With a little change here and there I made it with wood. As you can see the backdoor is open to a cone incense, the smoke will come out of the Chimney. Some will anyway. The Ghost Glow in the dark as does the skeleton on the back window and the eyes in the other windows. So Happy Halloween!!!

    Bowl, Bowl & Bowl

Between working on a bunch of worn out farm equipment, the garden and working on the house I finally got to get in the shop for a few days. The bowls are Poplar strips glued together and then bowls made from the boards. The basket is the first I have tried like that. It is just from 3/16 plyboard.

    Magnifier/light

I haven't been happy with my harbour freight magnifier/ light but to be honest my eyesight is far from the best. My collage age daughter had to get a upper and lower GI today and my wife and I drove the hour and a half to be with her. She needed a new tire on her car so we took it in to get it replaced, it happened to be next to hobby lobby so we decided to look around while they replaced the tire. While looking around I saw they had a Ottlights on sale for 1/2 price $69.99, one of you had recommended it so I picked one up hoping the optics are better quality. The procedure went well and they found nothing which was good. I'll give the light a try tomorrow to see if it works for me.

I've been reading this whole thread and came away totally confused. I regard every pattern that I have, whether a free one or a paid-for one" the exact same way. Once I have it, it's mine to use for whatever I want as long as I don't "re-sell" it. I make things from these patterns and if I sell my work and give credit to the pattern maker, I figure I've done my due diligence. If someone wants to sue me, good luck. I have nothing much.

So, I posted an ad on Kijiji and the reply was one of the sports shops was closing out and had a couple of sheets of stickers still available. Zipped out there. Got the last sheet of stickers and temporary tatoos. This one has the temporary tatoo on it. I still need to put a finish on it. Very happy - especially because the stickers/tat's were 75% off!

I was having problem with Inkscape and printing 11 x 17 ( I'm not alone ). The pattern for these is about 2/3 the original, and since I hate waste I'm using the pattern that I have. I had some 1/8 inch wood, so that's what I'm using. I don't know the species; blade FD Polar 2/0, pilot holes #71 drill bit ( .025 ), quarter for sca

    Magnifier/light

I used my H/F light while wearing my progressive lens glasses. I had double cataract surgery a few years back that left me with great distance vision but I missed wearing glasses and hated having to carry "readers" so I had glasses made that have no correction on the top and progress down to up close for reading. That's what I use to cut with looking through the magnifier. For me, it's a "no-brainer".

    Magnifier/light

Edward, I don't dislike the Harbour freight light just that it doesn't give me a crisp image. I can't really blame the light as I was double dosing some extremely noxious chemo drugs which has messed up my vision and hearing, the ottlight magnifying lens sharpens up the image a lot for me. I guess we're all different and there's no one answer that's suits everyone, and really that applies to everything in life. I'd certainly recommend the HF light to anyone with fairly good vision and as you say it's great value!

    Magnifier/light

Thanks Scrappile, I just assemble the ottlight butI haven't scrolled with it yet. The lens image is definitely better to my eyes and I also like the light, the light being floor standing is going to take some getting used too I hope it not a deal breaker.

    Magnifier/light

I have the Harbor Freight light, and I have a much more expensive one. The thing about the higher priced one is the lens is glass versa plastic on the HF one.. It s is a little more clearer. However I use both... I have mounts in several places were I can use them... One at my lathe, one at my workbench... and I always had one on my second saw when I had a second saw... The HF light is florescent and florescent lights bother some people.. The more expensive one I have has LED lights, sometimes it is almost too bright for me.. Glad your daughter's results were good.

I know a guy, saw him just yesterday as a matter of fact, who's wife would take Harley Davidson merchandise ( bought at thrift stores ) and remake those items into new items. While at a big craft show ( Las Vegas ) they were approached by a "suit" who handed them a business card ( he was a lawyer for HD ) and told them to "cease and desist" . There are those who troll sales venues looking for opportunities, if you know your product and where you stand with copyrights you can shortcut this nonsense. OTOH Steve Good had a blog in the last week about people on Etsy repackaging his patterns and bundling them with other patterns and selling them without his knowledge or consent. And the art publishing business I used to work at would have to scour E-bay twice a year to get the knockoffs pulled off the site. One more note; fonts, many fonts are copyrighted and cannot be used in a commercial setting without a license and if a pattern designer uses one of these fonts that does not negate the copyright. When I tried to find out how to get a commercial license from Dafont I got nowhere, just dead links. 20 years ago the art publishing business I worked for created a product that was; a matboard cut with letters for a sport i.e. football, the letters were designed to be very open in the center so that pictures could be placed behind ( think pictures from a senior years in football ) I used a font editor to create a unique font, to lend itself better for what we were doing and to avoid any copyright issues.

Are you talking about buying an actual individual pattern off of Amazon or, are you talking about buying a book with patterns off of Amazon and not knowing what it says is “permitted” without buying the book? If it’s a book, which I believe maybe what you are meaning based on seeing your comment in another thread, you could reach out to the publisher and ask for info. possibly or, ask here if anyone has the book and could let you know. Clearly, not ideal, but options. Most of the books with woodworking patterns are published by Fox Chapel so I would suspect that they all have pretty much the same copyright usage. I have 3 different Fox Chapel books sitting here next to me right now. One is from 2008, one from 2011, and one is from 2021, all 3 say pretty much the same thing, “patterns are copyrighted to the author. Readers may make copies for their personal use.” One specifically says “Readers may make 3 copies for personal use.” It’s the 2008 book. So the real question is what is deemed to be “personal use? Only you can can copy and use the pattern, or you can only use the pattern to create the item for “personal use”. I think it’s intentionally vague on that. Now, the big part of the statement for all 3 is that “the patterns themselves are not to be duplicated for resale or distribution under any circumstances.” I believe that is the main concern, that copies of patterns are not sold or redistributed any any way, because after all, it’s the patterns themselves that most of us buy the book for. However, with the statement that they are for “personal use,” it would seem that you could not use the pattern to make and sale even one item from any of those 3 books. It really depends on how one defines “personal use .” If very narrowly, then it would be to make and give away but not sell the finished product. A very broad interpretation would be I can use the pattern to personally make them, then I can do what I want with them. it would also need to inquire on what the “law” it’s self actually says on what I can do with items I make from a pattern I buy. I have lots of Fox Chapel books besides these 3, but it’s late so I’ll wait to check some more tomorrow to see if I find any different statements but I suspect they are all pretty much the same given the timeframe these 3 cover and they are essentially the same. I will also check some of my SSWC magazines (also published by Fox Chapel) and see what they say. I’m pretty sure that the magazine pullout pattern insert say I can make up to 10 copies for my personal use. Again, it’s what is deemed to be “personal use” that would control.
