  1. I haven't been able to get back on the saw since cutting my first project. I put off mowing my yard today and get some much needed practice in. Decided to try actually cutting a couple of patterns. The first one was posted on here( I'm sorry I forgot who posted it for credit) it's a gnome, and the second is a Steve Good pattern. Both are straight off the saw the gnome is a 1/2 scrap oak and the other is just a cheap 1/8" luan plywood scrap, I figured it's not worth using good wood yet. I still need to cut a couple of bits, then I will sand them and give them a coat of paint. I've still got a long long way to go. I'm still having a problem turning inside 90° corners consistently but I guess it's early days. The new light and magnifier worked well and I added the lockline upgrade for the blower, which is also great. Probably the most helpful addition was the foot pedal. Well I've took up enough of your time but I just have to say how much I appreciate your skills and craft after seeing your work and attempting to try and do something passable myself.

  2. I tried to stack cut a portrait of Einstein smoking a pipe, but when I took it apart the one on the bottom was sticking his tongue out at me. Died 67 years ago and still amazing. Actually I cut one for my shop and then my daughter requested the one with his tongue out for her classroom. The patterns aren't mine. Just some images I found on Google that I tweaked a bit to make scrollable.

  3. I'm retiring from puzzle making. I hit a new record, and I know I'll never do it again, so I might was well retire. Just kidding... but it was an amazing, record breaking weekend. I just got home and I'm so exhausted I can't put it into words. Here's the stats and remember, THIS IS VERY UNUSUAL AND NOBODY SHOULD EXPECT ANYTHING NEAR THIS UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES!!! 2 day event, 330 vendors, over 50,000 attendees. Lazy Daze in Cary, NC My Sales: 85 dog puzzles 36 non-dog puzzles 55 wall racks 16 stick figures Grand Total Sales - $5,745 If I had a dozen extra Greyhounds, Husky's and Shihtzu's, I'd have sold another 20 puzzles easily. I am so screwed as I have a decent 1 day event next Saturday. Good thing I took the week off from the day job this coming week.

  4. The following plaques are all 1/8” thk BB Ply cut panels mainly using Pegas #1 MGT R blades and mounted onto 1/2” sanded ply backers and intended to be hung outdoors. These projects were all rather quick cuts. Cut panels and backers are painted with combination of Krylon Spray Can Paints and Artist Acrylics. After assembly, the finished plaques were protected with multiple coats of rattle can spray Clear Gloss Polyurethane. Most of the cutting were positive images that I used the “washer” method to create backers that were slightly larger and perimeter and parallel to the cuttings. The exception was the 'Hello Fall' Image that is a negative resulting in a rectangular panel that I mounted permanently in a 3/4” wide rabbeted pine frame stained Minwax Honey. I could have simply rounded or chamfered the corners and left as a plaque like the others, but I just prefer to hide the exposed edges, of this style plywood/panel plaque, with a frame. The patterns were repurchased in downloadable zipp files that contained various JPG, PDF, SVG along with some other files. They are stencil patterns that I slightly modified to make more scrollable and added the words ’Hello Fall’ or ‘Welcome’ to. I purchased other stencil patterns at the same time, but they are predominantly Halloween images, and I was looking mainly for Fall. The Pumpkin in a Hat Image is for my Grandson for his new home and it will serve for both Fall and Halloween. I’ll hang the Bat on my house for a short time around Halloween. Halloween is very quiet in in our neighborhood with very few “Trick or Treaters”. I don’t really consider these pieces to be in the “ART” category. So, they were not made to be sold. They are all gifts to Myself as well as my Son, Daughter, Grandson and my next door Neighbors. Hung for a few weeks until winter sets in and then put away until next year to be replaced with the Santa portraits I made for both myself and them last year. Hello Fall Sign, Overall 12" x 18" Pumkin Welcome Sign, nom 11" x 17" (I made two stack cutting both cut panels and backers) Happy Fall Y'all Sign, Nom 10" x 10" (Aslo made two by stack cutting...attempt at the black shading was not too great) Pumpkin in Hat Welcome Sign, nom 11" x 12" Halloween Bat Welcome Sign, nom 11" x 17" Boo Pumpkin Welcome Sign, nom 10 "X 16" (pic taken before finish Poly was applied) As usual, comments and critiques are welcome.

  5. So this lady at the Farmer's Market asks if I could make her a sign for her. She wanted Welcome with a fish underneath of it. So I did some old school manual (scissors and tape) and merged two of Steve Good's patterns together and emailed her a copy. She liked it, so this morning I got a good refresher in cutting 1/8" Baltic Birch and small cuts. Went slow and am happy with the results. Now to turn it over to the painter (my wife) for her to finish.

    Hammering Hank

Henry "Hank" Aaron. Played most of his career with the Atlanta Braves. 755 career homeruns. He broke Babe Ruth's record of 714 in 1974. I was 13 at the time and remember friends explaining why Babe's record was better, which they probably heard from their dad. At the time I just figured I didn't know enough about baseball to understand. Pretty sure it had a lot more to do with color than baseball. Proud I got to see him play.

  7. Cut this Steve Good pattern ou,t once before and used wood glue which took some time with marking and being careful to not get sloppy with the glue. The kids got me a pin-nailer this past Christmas, so I tried that out and it went a lot faster. Which got me to thinking if anyone else out there used a nail gun for putting together their works?

  17. Yes, definitely experiment. I found with mine 100 psi would have the pin go in and be flush with the wood, versus having a little bit of it sticking above/out.

    drying rack

Here is my current system for drying small to medium parts. The rack folds to a very small footprint, they can be stacked for addition drying space. Once the finish is not tacky I'll set them out where the air flow is better than the shop.

  23. Thanks for the info Wichman! I'm using FD ultra reverse at the moment, being as I'm new at this I'll be trying others. I should have used a smaller blade on the flag I realize that now, I was cutting 1/2 oak with a #5 just before and just continued using it to do the flag.

  24. I'm out of town right now so I can't tell you the brand, but I have an 18g nailer and i have some 3/8" brads that I have used on 1/4" lath projects.

  25. Hi Joe I have been searching for a craftsman pin nailer that takes 1/2 inch pins. Do you know the model # or if your specs says 5/8 but 1/2 really work? I have found a couple of "micro pin nailers" that will take 1/2 and one of them is at Harbor Freight real cheap. (I only wish we had HF in Canada.) This is a really cool idea and am determined to test out.

  27. Hey Everyone! In this scroll saw project video I make this Beautiful Fish Art out of 3 layers of 1/4 inch plywood, I stained this Steve Good design to give off a rustic vibe. This would make a perfect gift for anyone who likes to fish! Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate **BONUS VIDEO** Me sharing my general knowledge of Scroll Saw Blade Clamps in hopes it helps some new scrollers

  37. I used a Chraftsman 23 gauge pin nailer with 1/2" pins with pressure set at 100psi. Assembled the pieces upside down - largest piece on the bottom working up to the smallest (base) piece - nailing from the underside at all the intersecting pieces of wood. No pins protruded out of the other pieces they were nailed to. Just to be sure, I tested it first on a couple 1/4" Baltic Birch scraps. The pins I use are: Metabo - Item # 22999SHPT. 2,000 to the package. Pretty sure I got them thru Amazon.

Excellent idea. Drying racks are practical and useful. I made one years ago for large parts when I made the cabinets for our kitchen. I've rented it out a couple times since then.

    Copyright issues

I have a book of patterns that says you are not allowed to reproduce anything in the book for any reason and later tells you how to use a copy machine to reproduce the patterns.

    Copyright issues

In just my humble opinion, reference to copyright only applies to the pattern itself and can not be applied to the product produced from them. I believe most patterns, stencils, images etc. found on-line, although they may state "copyright protected" are not unless associated with major corporations or actual book publishers. Just too costly for most creaters to bother with. Those who sell other peoples work are really the ones who are in the wrong, Steve Good's recent email, being a good example of this problem. Therefore, I can appreciate that a pattern I purchase should not be redistributed and sold for profit. However, once I purchase a copy it is mine to share, give away or transfer ownership. If the seller states "only purchasing a license for use" he/she is being nieve, and again, such a statement sounds good but is uninforcable. I also am of the opinion that particular patterns, produced by certain makers that state on their Website (or even on the pattern intself), that the pattern can not be used to produce commercial products, must be smoking something. It sounds very powerful but, I believe, a totally uninforcable statement. That is kind of like an Art paint manufacturer saying you can buy their paint but cannot sell a painting done with their paint. Too dumb for words. Also, patterns are simply suggestions fo making a resulting image, not unlike a coloring book or paint by numbers kit. Even the smallest deviation from the pattern, makes it unique and no longer what was sugggested. AND WE ALL DEVIATE, DON'T WE? If you don't mess with highly recognizable LOGO's or products by major organizations, like a Harley Davidson, copyright infringement being detected/determined and/or even verified, in any of our scroll saw work and/or our product sales is highly unlikely. I know a there are those wno will not agree with me regarding all or parts of the above, but as I stated, they are only my opinions and how I chose to operate.
