    More stuff finished

I finally got the rest of the much earlier stuff finished. Eye is from Botas cut in Curly Maple finished with an Osmo product. It is really nice, one coat and it feels so smooth. You/me is a Jessica Boehm pattern cut in Cherry. Also finished with Osmo.

  2. Spent a bit of time in the shop, too much rain for golf. Made a charcuterie board with a river run of epoxy also some Christmas plaques and leaves. Some assembly require for Alex Fox bowls.

  3. Here is my latest herd of "Fred's". Steve Good pattern that I reduced to 50%. 1/4" BBply. The base is an old cut off from a Christmas tree. Finish is a new product I tried. Not sure I really liked it. Turned out to be a little more "glossy" than I normally would use, but I guess we'll see at my November craft sale. Probably need a bit more practice with it.

    Cutting Corian

Hi Keith, I have cut quite a bit of Corian. I have made many trivets from it. Your choice of blade it the right one. Two things are critical when cutting plastics, lubrication and saw speed. I always cover the pattern with packing tape and slow down the saw speed. I would probably also use a #3 or #5 polar blade. Try making some cuts in scrap areas until you get the feel for your saw speed and feed rate.

    John Nelson Patterns

John contacted me at the beginning of summer and sent me a big ol' stack of patterns to share with SSV members. That was a pretty amazing surprise! I've been working on them and scanning them to PDF files as I can (I'm a bit slow). It took me awhile to figure out how to get it from paper to a nice digital download. But we got there in the end. I still have a bunch to scan in, and I'll continue working on them as I can. This first batch has a lot of fun Christmas themed patterns and they use the decoupage/applique method that John wrote about in this article: I set up a special section in the eBooks area to house these patterns. A special thank you to @john nelson for providing these great patterns for us all to enjoy! Check them out when you get a chance. His patterns can be found here.

    I'll be back soon

That looks like it's about the same size as mine. I have an attach storage shed that was built onto the side of our mobile home. It was never intended to be a shop but I made it into one. It's 9 x 13 with a tall area on both sides that I put a shelf up all around on 3 sides so I have a fairly low area for shelving. I'd love to have one like yours. Now all ya gotta do is lay some concrete or brickwork just outside the doors so you can roll some of your equipment outside. That's what I have to do with my table saw and other stuff. Congrats on a nice work area.

    Copyright issues

Copy right of some things is basically unenforceable. A silhouette of a snowman, or shark for instance. There a literally thousands of extremely similar silhouettes out there. No matter if you do your own free hand, some body somewhere will think it looks just like the one from such and such a supplier. A reasonable alternative, that I have been trying to follow is to copy or create my own patterns from old magazine artwork. I mean old, as in the copyright ran out. There are several archives containing such old magazines and they tell you right up front which are in public domain., I also have a file of my own old magazines and catalogs from the 1850's through 1940. If the magazine folded and no longer exists, it is extremely unlikely that anyone will care that you used a drawing or photo from a 75 yr old defunct magazine. Another source is old movies before 1940. Current copyright, for items published 1978 and after, is life of the author plus 70 years.. For items before that, there is a host of ridiculous and technical time periods. For instance, the movie, "It's A Wonderful Life," had the copyright expire back in the 1970's, but the copyright on the underlying story "The Greatest Gift" and the music lived on, so the movie itself was not protected, but the story and music still were. If you take an old picture from a 100 year old magazine and adapt your own pattern. The picture you adapted from is not protected, but the pattern you adapt from it, it protected to you as a current derivative work. Sort of bizarre. The "Lion Sleeps tonight" song is a more twisted copyright matter. It was adapted from a 175 yr old Zulu folk song. In 1939, Solomon Linda recorded the song and added the wailing heard in the 1949 Weavers and 1963 Token's version of the song. Disney used the song in the movie the Lion King. and was sued by the heirs of Solomon Linda for using, not the song, but his version of the song. Solomon Linda died in 1961, at which time the copyright he sold in 1939, reverted to his estate. His heirs collected over 10 million from Disney. So yes it is complicated. Just make sure you use a very old picture that has passed into the public domain.

    Cutting Corian

I'd go with the packing tape. I've had the same issue with plexiglass and I could use a number 3 blade with absolutely no melting. I know corian is different but it's worth a try.

    Hammering Hank

Henry "Hank" Aaron. Played most of his career with the Atlanta Braves. 755 career homeruns. He broke Babe Ruth's record of 714 in 1974. I was 13 at the time and remember friends explaining why Babe's record was better, which they probably heard from their dad. At the time I just figured I didn't know enough about baseball to understand. Pretty sure it had a lot more to do with color than baseball. Proud I got to see him play.

  23. After cutting the 'peace sign' pattern of Charles Hand and really appreciated all of his efforts when I had trouble downloading the peace sign. After all the time he gave me, I remembered Charles Hand had another of his patterns on the front of the last Scroll saw magazine so I decided to give it a go also. I have a granddaughter that had a racoon for a pet several years ago and decided to make it for her for Christmas as a reminder of that time in her life when she found the little racoon outside her home. If you also have the magazine, you might want to give it a try, I used a #2 spiral Peg as blade and cut it with a 1/4 inch Baltic Birch ply. enjoyed cutting it and found it quite challenging too. 24. Charlie - you give one too many clues. It was shortly after I was married and a new bride so I am actually not really familiar with it but “inconceivably” I believe I googled and figured it out. This princess will pm you my answer so as not to tell to soon.

  35. Well grass is cut and the yard was tidied up so I had a free after noon and decided to try something out of my comfort zone. Didn't go completely to plan as I ended up having a thin piece break off on me ! . Going to sand and clean these off as my wife seems to think I should keep them, go figure may try paint on some of them. Maybe I'll try some good wood next week instead of scrap! I'm improving slowly!

  38. I bought my Pegas scrollsaw in late 2020. It is my only scrollsaw and I have many hours and many projects of use with it. I have never had a problem of the type you describe. The only problem I have had with my saw was when the blades started slipping and I had to replace the thumb screws and swivels.

  39. Might try blowing it out with a can of air or air compressor if you have one, can of air is probably preferable because it is dried air where a air compressor may have some moisture content.. Blow it out around the area of the speed dial like between the dial and where it goes into the case. My saw isn't a Pegas but is really close to the same thing as the Pegas is based off the Excalibur.. My saw does this from time to time.. and it's caused by sawdust getting into the speed switch. Blow it out and it stops for a few weeks then all of a sudden speed goes crazy..

    Cutting Corian

I have never cut corian but I have cut plexiglass. And I found at least for me and the thickness of Plexiglass I was cutting 1/2 I had to cut fast. When I did I had no melting.

    Cutting Corian

I would try 2 things. First using a slightly larger blade, that should increase the width of the kerf. Second. slow the feed rate down, give it a chance to clear the kerf out. So sort of slower speed on feed and blade speed.

    Charles Hand Racoon

@heppnerguy Dick, please don’t be concerned that I was upset by your comments. I was not, you have always been encouraging to me (and everyone else) since I first visited the Village and started my scrolling journey. I realized you were still just encouraging me to stretch my skills here and took it as such. I have tried many new things with my scrolling because of encouragement of you and so many others here in the Village including some fretwork. I just wanted to explain, that I had tried it but at this time, it wasn’t my favorite type of work, especially really detailed pattern like this one. I find them beautiful, and know the patience, skill and time involved and admire those of you who do them. I just have learned, I can’t drill all those holes, unclamp, rethread the blade in a new hole, re-clamp, cut another small segment and do it over and over and over again. At present, I have learned I don’t have the patience or skill required. I do do a few fretwork patterns, but I limit the size and holes needed. if I ever give a detailed one a go, you’ll be the first I tag to see it. in the interim, I will admire yours and others works on them and challenge myself in other ways.

  49. need to make two of these... I live out in the country, but the neighbors are close enough we can talk at the fences or yell at each other. I am often on my deck with binoculars, not to watch my neighbors but to look for Birds, deer and foxes that are sometimes in our lower fields. So, I need to make a pair of these to put on the fences between us..just to make them nervous..
