    A few more done

The wine door hanger is from Steve Good and the tractor is from Alex Fox, did not have too much time in the shop because weather is nice for golf.

  3. I work from home and have to use my phone for MFA authentications, many times a day (SysAdmin, I jump into a lot of different servers requiring MFA) I typically lay my phone down, and pick it up every time I have to allow myself access. So, I figured I should make myself some sort of phone holder to hold it upright so I can just tap the allow button. I had some left over white cedar from a bunch of bird feeders I was building, so looked online for some ideas. I saw one that someone made that I sort of liked. I printed the picture out and followed it as my pattern. Because it's cedar, and smells good, I just left it raw and unfinished. I sanded it a bit, but I didn't want to spend more than 15 or 20-minutes making it. This is what I came up with: Dan

I have had both on excalibur, and The Pegas clamps are a nicer clamp, less mass and prettier.. But I agree they did not really change my saw's performance or mine... If I had the original clamp on an excalibur I would use then until something went bad. Then I would replace them with the pegas.. clamps. However there are others that feel much stronger about them. And I concede, they are a nicer clamp.

  6. Hmm, not sure where to start.. I guess the most unique ( maybe ) is this pool table clock I made some years ago.. The table itself was cut from 3/4 Walnut and bevel cut the inner part to recess into the center of the table and was basically just press fitted. Then glued the ball rack clock part onto that and added the green felt. My most talked about piece probably. Sold it for $225 about ten years ago Then I made this monster truck, Steve Good pattern.. that actually can be played with.. Sold it also for $125 maybe 8 years ago.. Those two items are probably the more unique things I made.. the rest are just clocks and puzzles that I typically sell.

  7. I have an EX-21. I changed to the Pegas chuck heads after 10 years of usage. The blade holders where starting to slip. I probably could have done a renewal quick clamp from seyco but everyone was saying how great the Pegas clamps were. I had the money so I did it when on sale with Denny at Artscrafter and had them mailed to Canada. I think it was just over $100 Canadian with the exchange and postage. I honestly did not notice a great difference in performance but did get better blade holding. My 2 cents if you are experiencing problems it is a good upgrade but if ain't broke don't fix it.

  11. I started my scroll saw work doing intarsia. I enjoyed the idea that I could make anything at all out of wood. That surprised me in itself. After messing with those for about 7 years, I got tired of doing them. I still tackle one now and then but now my past is coming back to me in my Facebook memory, look backs, like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, I posted yesterday here. So this morning I received another one of them from 7 years ago also. This one is one I completely designed and made the pattern myself. It turned out a new doctor was assigned to work in our local hospital and he turned out to be my wife's personal doctor. After talking to him for awhile, I found out he was an Oregon Duck fan so I decided to gift him with a little plaque and this was the results

Morn’n Barb. I buy boxes of Christmas card assortments from Leaning Tree. Then I glue the front of the card to one side of the ply blank and the sentiment from the inside of the card on the other (creates a two-sided puzzle). For these I just cut a simple "standard" puzzle cut of 35 pieces. I’m thinking of cutting my "figure 8" cut for next year. Here’s a pic of the back of one of the cards …

I have them on my China made Excalibur and apparently the China made chucks have some tolerance differences and I had issues clamping small blades. The hole for the set screw was too far forward from the back of the slot where the blade goes into.. SO, in my case yes they was very worth the cost as I wouldn't even use the saw ( since I had others to use ).. Now it seems to be my favorite saw to use.. But I've basically rebuilt it and turned it into a USA made saw because I pretty much remade everything in the saw, That all being said, when I rebuilt the saw the new bearing / arm assembly came with new chucks.. and I used those for a while.. They worked fine.. so I would say if they are working for you then use them.. if you have issues I'd upgrade.. I don't notice the smoother running saw claim that Pegas says in their advertising.. but they are easier to use for sure.

  17. I use 1/2" baltic birch for backers and end up with a lot of scrap. Cut them up in strips and glued them face to face to make usable pieces to make this box. I only do something like this when my planer blades are super dull and I'm ready to change them because all the glue and end grain in the plywood will dull them quick. I used stain to even the wood color out a bit.

  18. I did electrical Maintenance for 43 years and my first question was usually, "is it plugged in? and is it turned on?"surprisingly, that fixed many problems. LOL.

  19. I decided a day or two ago to try one of the color pictures. So I did this one.. I really enjoyed doing it. Kind of like making a puzzle. Cut everything out, paint the pieces and put it back together. The hardest part was waiting for the paint to dry...It was a lot of fun. Did not take long. Another reason I wanted to do it,, I went to the woodstore the other day, looking for wood to make a step stool... Decided to check out the price of BB. Last sheet of 1/8" cost me $18. Today it is $62! So I am making thing that I can use all the odd size pieces I have.. Any way, my first "scrap build". Lot of fun.

  20. Here is one I made 7 years ago. I almost forgot all about it. I went to Washington DC with my son and grandson a couple of days after my 75th birthday and my son's 50th birthday. His birthday is the day after mine. This is a JGR pattern and the only one I ever made of it. I gave it to a wonderful person in the little town of Heppner, Oregon, where we lived for 15 years. He was in the Army Intelligence and also the mayor of our town. It humbled him and he thought it would be better seen at City Hall instead of at his house, so he gave it to the city and it was put up in City Hall. Dick heppnerguy

I put the Pegas clamps on a new dewalt and although I thought I could tell the difference, not being able to do a side by side comparison, I could not be sure. I bought a used Jet, the auto clamp worked okay, but really didn’t like it. Just put on a set of the Pegas clamps (with the white lever). The Pegas top clamps seems to be about a third the size of the Jet. It seems to definitely run smoother. Denny at Arrcrafters had a great price, and I got them quickly.

  33. Thanks for your comments. I usually modify Steve Goods patterns. He designs thinner than I like. He uses a lot of 1/" material. Too hard for me to glue up. I hardly ever go thinner than 3/8".

Thanx Paul. My best sellers were my puzzles and military plaques. Came away with 6 orders for customized plaques (I laser personalized info on them e.g. names, rank, years of service, unit or ship ID - anything they want to put on it)in addition to the 'generic' ones I sold there. Only had 12 misc puzzles with me and sold them all. Sold about half of the 40 Christmas card puzzles I had. I have no desire to turn this into a job, so it’ll be easy to keep it fun.

Got enough copies made, over the next few days I'll get together a materials list then get wood ordered. I'll post pictures along the way, this will take me probably most of the winter as I only get a few hours a week on my shop. I'm really looking forward to the challenge. Chris

  46. In a post under Q&A, OCtoolguy was asking about use of Thin MDF. In his post he happened to show a pic of a Tissue Box cover he was making that had an image of a Palm Tree on its sides. This reminded me that I needed to make a couple more cube type tissue box covers for my home, and a Palm Tree would be a good image for my Florida home. And, as you are aware in Florida, pollen is prevalent, so allergy siffles and sneezing results in tissue boxes being all over the house. I had previously made a Hummingbird Cube tissue box cover for my lady’s desk and then a Seahorse cover for one of our end tables. I needed another one for my desk and another for the other End Table. Using the same building techniques as previously with mitered joinery, I made these two covers, “Beach w/ Palm Tree” and “Starfish”. The box walls are nominal 1/4” thick made up of Solid Core 5/32” Maple cut panels mounted to 1/8” thick BB ply hand painted backers. My corner joints are much better than my previous builds but not quite as neat as I would like. However, since they are a utilitarian product for my home with a little Art built in, they work well when pulling out a tissue and the joints are only very noticeable in the photos…not so much in the real life sitting on my furniture. Comments and critique always welcome.

  48. that's interesting and intriguing. We experienced a similar situation a few years ago. My wife was making a cake of the Duhamel cathedral for a friend. Quite detailed with its many windows and such. Anyway, it looked really good in real life, but the photos I took of it showed every little imperfection. Can't quite figure that out, but assume the brain is responsible in some way. By the way, nice cutting. Especially like the starfish.
