    Sir Elton John

Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me was popular when I was a teenager and loved fishing more than most anything. It always makes me think of being on a lake in the late afternoon not wanting the day to end. Thanks for the memories Elton. This was done from a black and white drawing I found on a site with free downloads as long as it was for personal use. The artist, Wilson Santos, did a wonderful job and it was fun deciding what to cut as I went along.

    At long last

I have not done much scrolling this year because it has been far too cold in the garage even though I have a heater. But I have done a bit here and there and now they are finished i will show you. They are Christmas cards, stack cut and finished with tape on the inside. Marg

    Christmas ornament

Hi everyone, just a quick shoutout to Don in Brookline for adding this name on Steve Goods pattern. I was able to get out in the shop finally for a little bit. I added a backer to this one to make the letters stand out more. Just need to put a picture in it once the baby is born. Not due until November. Thanks again Don. Really appreciate it.

    Another Puzzle

Another puzzle to add to my collection. I think I will try #3 blade next time, although I have to be careful as the paint fills up the cuts pretty quickly. I don't like the pieces to be too tight as it frustrates the kiddies. I used an Olson Mac 7 to cut the perimeter and a PG#5 for internal cuts.

  9. As promised in another post. This is the way I create a grey pattern with a red outline in Inkscape. I have a preference for these colours as I find a black line difficult to follow with a scrollsaw blade whereas my blade stands out against a red line. I've condensed the process into 6 stages. 1) At the Top Lefthand corner of the page there is a 'File' button. Click on this and a box will drop down. Click ‘Import’ button and find the pattern you want and click on it and that will take it to your Inkscape screen. Click on your image so that it’s got a 'box' around it. 2) At the very top of the screen you will see a line of various words (File-Edit-View) etc. Click on ‘Path’ and a box will appear, then click on ‘Trace Bitmap’ a drop box will appear on the screen and show you the pattern that you've 'outlined' Click on ‘Live Preview’ if you don’t see it and your pattern will appear in the box Click on ‘OK’ This will make an SVG copy of your pattern. 3) Click on and drag the copies apart. The ‘top’ copy is the one you use. 4) Highlight this copy and click on the ‘Grey’ paint box at the bottom of the screen and this will turn the pattern Grey and you will see that colour in the ‘Fill’ box that is at the very bottom of the page. 5) While you still have your image highlighted, Right Click on ‘Red’ paint at the bottom of the screen and a box will popup, select ‘Set Stroke’ and this will give you a Red outline, you will see this in the ‘Stroke’ box that is underneath the 'Fill' box. You can also adjust the width of the outline by doing a ‘right click’ on the tiny numbers next to the ‘Stroke’ box, a drop box of widths will appear ( I use 0.25 as this suits my #3 blade nicely) but you can play with the different widths until you find one that suits you. 6) Go to the 'File' button at the top lefthand corner and choose 'Print', this will open a 'box' so that you can chose your printer. I then click the 'Preferences' button and it will show me whether I've chosen 'Portrait' or 'Landscape' on my Inkscape page. I personally then have to go to 'Advanced' and choose A4 paper size as that's what we commonly use here in the UK, I'm not sure what any other country has as a default but there are a few choices. You can then print your pattern. Bear in mind that Inkscape only prints what is inside the 'page' that is shown on your screen. I then ‘save’ these changes so that if I cut the pattern again it’s already sorted and ready to print. I hope this is helpful and that I've laid it out in a manner that can be understood and followed. If not, let me know.

    Peacock

Fish, great job on the peacock panel. It is a lot of work!. I did the same a few years back and actually cut 8 panels and made into night lamps. I used amber lexan as an inside backer. The original pattern was done by Tiffany and are 2 curved doors in The Chicago Palmer House Hotel. It may be a challenge but they made wonder lamps. Message me if you want more details.

Busy week and what time I got on the saw was spent just cutting line, curves and corners trying to improve my skills. I must admit I got very frustrated with myself, don't tell anyone but I was cutting a corner and made a mistake and just pushed the whole peice of wood through the blade and threw the bits on the floor Anyway I sat down for a few hours this morning and cut a Steve Good pattern. I must admit I did struggle with the small details, but my cutting was smoother, not happy with it but I see improvement. I also knocked up a quick Halloween lantern my wife had asked me to do.

    Stain, Paint, Or?

That photo isn't of my ornament, it's the photo from the designer of the ornament, I purchased the plans from Etsy. I have not painted my ornament yet as I'm waiting on the paint markers to be shipped. As far as the size.. I made the size around 3 1/2 inch diameter.. but I can resize and make it up to around 8" diameter. My laser is limited to a 8 x 11 working area so probably just shy of 8" is what I'm capable of making it.. that is until I get a new laser. While this is a laser design.. when purchasing the plans they also send a PDF file too.. and one could make it with the scroll saw as well.. you'd not get the engraved text around the outer circle though.. The original design before i resized it was around 4" diamerter but they wouldn't fit into the small gift boxes I use for my ornaments so i resized it smaller.. Can be made as small or large as needed on the laser up to my 8" workable area.

  33. I decided a day or two ago to try one of the color pictures. So I did this one.. I really enjoyed doing it. Kind of like making a puzzle. Cut everything out, paint the pieces and put it back together. The hardest part was waiting for the paint to dry...It was a lot of fun. Did not take long. Another reason I wanted to do it,, I went to the woodstore the other day, looking for wood to make a step stool... Decided to check out the price of BB. Last sheet of 1/8" cost me $18. Today it is $62! So I am making thing that I can use all the odd size pieces I have.. Any way, my first "scrap build". Lot of fun.

  34. This Nite Light has been my go to gift for new mothers for 3 generations now. Started making them when our peers were having babies, then those kids started having babies, and now the babies are having babies! The Nite Lite is designed with a fretwork panel that slides in front of the light and screens the light from the inside. A hidden chamber in the back can store additional panels.

  35. Here are just 3 I could I easily find. Probably shared at some point. I have made many phone holders and given as gifts. Still have a bunch but this Mickey one is a one of a kind I made for myself and use at night when I am charging phone in kitchen. I have others I use in the workroom and workshop but he is my favorite. The butterfly box I believe is a Steve Good pattern. His pattern had something else on it and I changed and added the butterfly instead. I wanted the butterfly as my mom loved butterflies so I did it to honor her memory. It has a curved lid and layered with different wood to add color to the butterfly. Here is link to Steve’s pattern for the box. https://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2020/06/curved-lid-box.html The football is a trivet cut for use in my kitchen. I added the power T for my beloved TN Vols who I hope may some day return back to being a team of some relevance. Hope does spring eternal. At least we have had great baseball and basketball the past few years to get us over the agony of football season.

  36. Hmm, not sure where to start.. I guess the most unique ( maybe ) is this pool table clock I made some years ago.. The table itself was cut from 3/4 Walnut and bevel cut the inner part to recess into the center of the table and was basically just press fitted. Then glued the ball rack clock part onto that and added the green felt. My most talked about piece probably. Sold it for $225 about ten years ago Then I made this monster truck, Steve Good pattern.. that actually can be played with.. Sold it also for $125 maybe 8 years ago.. Those two items are probably the more unique things I made.. the rest are just clocks and puzzles that I typically sell.

  37. I work from home and have to use my phone for MFA authentications, many times a day (SysAdmin, I jump into a lot of different servers requiring MFA) I typically lay my phone down, and pick it up every time I have to allow myself access. So, I figured I should make myself some sort of phone holder to hold it upright so I can just tap the allow button. I had some left over white cedar from a bunch of bird feeders I was building, so looked online for some ideas. I saw one that someone made that I sort of liked. I printed the picture out and followed it as my pattern. Because it's cedar, and smells good, I just left it raw and unfinished. I sanded it a bit, but I didn't want to spend more than 15 or 20-minutes making it. This is what I came up with: Dan

  38. Few things come up for this topic. Covid keys,2 tier trays great sweets tray although most people here use them for decorating for different seasons halloween,Christmases, upside down bird houses lol, flower pot holders, christmas card holder, double sudden pen holder I made for the pea I turn on occasion, and last but sure not less tablet stands in shape of cutting boards.

  39. Test-tube rack for holding scroll saw blades. Dragons are on two sides of a dice tower, the dragon-topped box is a tweaked Steve Good box design, used it to hold D&D dice. The two heart-shaped jewelry boxes are also SG designs (added a dragon to one for my daughter, rose went to my wife).

  40. I hesitate to post these pics because most of you have already seen them. But here goes. The nut basket, votive holder and center piece are all derived from patterns by John Nelson. The 3 candle holders are from a pattern by an unknown designer. I took the original and made 3 sizes out of it. The last one is a bowl from Sue Mey.

  41. I like items with a purpose and compound cutting, so years ago (actually January 2017), I made a compound cut Air Plant Holder. This is a Sue Mey pattern. The second picture is from the customer that purchased to item. What a fun category.

  42. So many projects to choose from! Here are a few. The hair pick is used every day as are the phone/tablet/ereader stands. The salad "fingers" and pasta measurer are in regular use. The sun/moon light was made for my grandson 4 years ago & is still used.

  43. I think this fits the Theme. Made for my Lady's young Grandson, who loves Dragons, so he can learn to tell time that is not digital and learn a little Chineese at the same time. Edit 9/4/22: Just remembered my Cube style Tissue box covers...very functional projects.
