    A little shop time

With my eyesight as wonky as it is I don't get to do a lot of scrolling. Just a couple of pieces I finished. Sadie and Trudy ornaments are from Steve Good and the Wolf is Grampa's I downsized it to work as a magnet. Still have some sanding to do and then stain.

  2. I converted this Zebra Image I found on-line into an 11” x 12” scrollable pattern. Cut panel is in 3/32” solid core Hand Painted Birch Ply affixed to a ¼” BB ply painted Black backer. Cutting was done using Pegas #1 MGT R blades. Assembled panel protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer Frame is 1 ¾” wide primed and painted Poplar. Comments and Critiques always welcome.

  5. Added a cut to my “Theme” the fourth was finished today but still to be sanded, oiled and varnished, but I can update the first three and you can see where I am going with this theme. Just a reminder cuts two and thre was posted a few weeks ago, all the cut was with a #0 straight pin less blade. Thanks to Botas Helder for the Last Supper, Condemned and Crucified (renamed for my theme) Russ Beard Patterns.

    Dust control for my Dremel

As I get better dust control overall in my shop one of the last issue to address was my dremel. I use it quite a bit for shaping the segmentation and as I venture into intarsia, that too. In the past I would wait for a nice day, cart everything outside and sand there. While mowing the lawn last week I got to thinking on that (I do a lot of deep thinking while riding the lawn mower (lol)). In the picture is what I came up with. It's 4"PVC with the top part I got from a local woodworking shop. I put a piece of windows screen to catch the pieces that pop out of my hands and it's set at a height that allows me to sit on my stool while sanding. I've used it a few times and it seems to be doing the job as I envisioned. Chris

  7. Thanks again for the help. I have looked through all my posts and found the name blocks that I was after but there is no way I can find how to make them. I will start again and see if I can work out the method. I believe it is done in Inkscape so that is a start. Many thanks again.

Cute ornaments, LOVE the wolf!!! Very nice cutting!! Even being nearsighted, I've found a magnifying lamp works wonders for helping with cuts.

    Searching for posts ?

Don, did you perhaps use Steve Good's Compound keychain name system to create? f you go up to your user name (its in the top right corner on my computer) and click and drag down - you will see "attachments" - the will let you view all the images/photos you have ever attached or added here in the Village. You can also see all the threads you have posted by clicking on your user name, drag down to select profile, and once at profile page - select the "See my activity" block over to the right side (its the blue box and while I hovered over it it shows the popup to see meflick's Content - select the blue box by clicking on it) and it will show what you have posted. You could have to filter through if its been a while since you shared. Just some other ways to find things you have shared in the past.

    First cut

Been revisiting a couple of old threads lol. It been just over a month since I posted my first cut. I thought a reasonable way to gadge my progress would be to cut another name block. I couldn't find another 3/4 peice of pine all I could find in my scrap pile was a peice of 1 1/4 inch laminated pine board. This is fresh off the saw no sanding and took about 1/4 of the time to do, also the edges are shiny smooth none of those ridges I had to sand out on the first one. For once I'm quite pleased not with the cut (still room for a lot of improvement) but with the progress of my techniques, smoother and more consistent cuts.

    From my memories

Just Mr. Jones doing his usual GREAT JOB! Making tour own patterns always adds more enjoyment, even when it took multiple tries to get the pattern decent! I have wasted a lot of posterboard, but I am too STUBBORN to quit before I get a reasonable result too. Sometimes it takes 4-5 different attempt or more for me to get a reasonable one.

    John Wayne

If I remember correctly, The Duke once said something like "It's a great job, all I've got to be is myself" I think the only bummers are where he tried to impersonate somebody else, like Genghis Khan and the Centurion in The greatest Story ever Told' "Truly this Man is The Son of God" I still regularly watch John Wayne Movies. You know who the good guys are and the bad blokes always get their comeuppance. The way things should be. BTW That's a nice pattern and cutting Kris.

What blades are you using? When I started scrolling in '85 I had a Sears hobby saw; 13" , used 3" pin end blades. The saw used spring tension and was not adjustable. When cutting knotty pine the blade would bow in the cut if the pattern was near a knot. The blades would actually take a set and would be bowed when I removed them from the saw. I currently use Flying Dutchman Polar blades, for me they are less likely to bend inside the cut, I've cut 1/2" thick stacks with a 0/2 blade and 1 1/2" with a #1. I would suggest that you try a number of different blades and test for yourself which ones work best for you. Most of the shops selling blades have sample pack to make this easier for you the costumer.

Have you adjusted the blade tension with the knob in the back?. I know, you are saying "well doh!". but some times it is the simple things we over look. I know you leveled the arms, but the tension tension part can get worn and not hold tension. I had to replace mine on my Hegner once. Anyway, welcome to the forum. Glad you are joining us and I look forward to seeing your work. One more thing, if you do not get help here do not hesitate to call Ray at Seyco... Not his saw anymore but he knows all there is to know about the excalibur type of saw.

Eplfan2011: " I mostly kept to the line (but they are only a suggestion right) but the s has a few flatspots on it ( I'm presuming I'm turning without feeding?) " I do a lot of word art. I have discovered that we - the "cutters" see the micro-departures. Those who look at our work see the macro outcome. Minor departures become nearly invisible to those who view the whole. My motto has become "Cut with care and trust the pattern. Don't sweat the small stuff." Your work is hand-crafted and minor departures are a signature of "hand made." Great job and keep making sawdust. Bruce
