I have not posted for a while, but am still alive and cutting. Here are few of my latest. First two are Jim Blume patters and the Lord's Prayer is from Sue Mey on more of my reclaimed maple. Jeff

  2. Another attempt at segmented picture. Not a success because I lost a couple pieces. Two of the very thin line pieces were so thin they crumbled when I handled them and for some reason the black paint did not cure beyond tacky. I suppose I could fill the missing lines with white card stock. Anyway this was a practice. I enjoyed doing it. Never has any problem with rust-oleum paint before, but it is still tacky and I painted it two days ago. I love these pictures, I have this one and a trumpet player.

  3. It has been quite a while since I got to do any kind of woodworking. The last thing that I can recall doing was a cradle for my Sons first born. He will be seven in December. After Dad passed and I moved Mom up next to us all that I have had time for was construction type work. Wife took of to see her friend in Florida last week and I stayed home to take care of the Dogs. Being that I am now semi retired I decided to take some time and uncover my Scroll Saw and move enough around in the garage that I would not kill myself while trying to move around. Not actually bragging (we should have a forum entitled stuff that I not ashamed of). I started out with some simple ornaments in Poplar wood ( I think all those patterns were from the Village Charity Book) to see if: 1 The saw still worked. 2 I could still follow a line. After that I decided to try my hand at compound cutting. Always wanted to but had never had the time. Those are made from Eastern Cedar. Steve Goods patterns. Below are the results. All are straight off the saw and blown off with the air hose, no sanding or finish hopefully that will come later and not be another 7 years. Thoughts good or bad welcome.

    Just for fun

I saw someone post this H Botas peice a while ago and I thought it was fun. I got the pattern and cut it out of scrap (you can see the repair buy his feet) today just for fun. I had fun trying to cut it, which makes a change as I'm usually cussing at my beginner skills. I will be revisiting this at a later date. I think I may be ready to waste some good wood, the weather's getting colder so a outside bonfire needs some fuel

  7. So here is the last cut in the theme that I have done, to me it sums it up beautifully. The pattern is from Botas Helder and for the theme I have renamed it “ Give Praise to the Risen Christ”. I chose to stain the outside of the cut to draw attention to the hands, because I feel it sums it up beautifully.

    Paint Or Not?

I'm really new to painting so I don't really have any tips on painting, LOL That said, I do some CNC wood carving and I do use paints for those projects either to paint the words and or paint the entire board and then do the carve so it's a natural wood look on the carved out areas while the rest is painted. Usually black.. When doing this I always seal the bare wood with 2-3 coats of water based poly.. Then paint or carve and then after carving I also put a few coats of clear on before painting the carved area to help seal the wood before painting if painting.. if no painting then I just seal the whole thing with clear.. The flag in the middle is an example of painting the board and then carving and then clearcoat the whole thing.. The others was cleared then carved.. painted and then remove the oramask and then clearing the whole thing. Quite a learning experience with painting wood and other porous materials compared to car painting that I'm used to doing, LOL..

    Circle Sanding Jig

Here is what I use. Very basic. Of coarse with this on you have to have a center hole in the working piece. You can drill holes in the slider to fit the hole in your circle. O used this mainly when making wheels and gears. works pretty well, but downside only on something you are willing to have a center hole in.

  14. Paul, If you didn't say it, I wouldn't know it. Looks great to me. I do alot of patterns with black backers and my wife always gives me her brush on black acrylic paint. It drys in no time and always comes out great. Give it a try.

  16. I kinda agree with RabidAlien. Looks perfect to me. I can't see any missing pieces... even after you mentioned them. Looks like an outstand job to me. Something you may want to try, If I spray paint my backer board black and then hit it with a clear while it is still tacky, the result with cause the black to crinkle giving it a texture. This doesn't work on all projects (esthetics wise) but I have had a few that I did it intentionally with pleasing effects. I have also had rattle cans of paint that seem to cure at different intervals, even from the same case... some as long as a couple days.

    Weather Vane

This is a Steve Good pattern cut from 3/4-inch treated pine ply with a 1/4-inch pine backer. The paint is actually black but looks blue in the picture due to the poor lighting. The backer is stained Natural to contrast with the black. Wanted something easy to cut although the treated pine was a little tough on the blades.

    Circle Sanding Jig

One additional note. If you are trying to true up a circle without a center hole, create a blank circle with a hole, then attach the blank without a hole on top with double stick tape or adhesive, sand and remove.

  23. Dogs are good. If it weren't for them I could probably be fully retired. We have an area we call the bark park that is fenced off about 60 x 100 ft that they spend the days in if it is not too hot. They will definitely let you know when it is feeding time.

    Dust control for my Dremel

As I get better dust control overall in my shop one of the last issue to address was my dremel. I use it quite a bit for shaping the segmentation and as I venture into intarsia, that too. In the past I would wait for a nice day, cart everything outside and sand there. While mowing the lawn last week I got to thinking on that (I do a lot of deep thinking while riding the lawn mower (lol)). In the picture is what I came up with. It's 4"PVC with the top part I got from a local woodworking shop. I put a piece of windows screen to catch the pieces that pop out of my hands and it's set at a height that allows me to sit on my stool while sanding. I've used it a few times and it seems to be doing the job as I envisioned. Chris

  26. Chris, I made one years ago, I modeled my after a downdraft table. It did a perfect job, I'll have to try to find it. It's not as good looking as yours is, but it worked fine for what I wanted it for. Len

    Paint Or Not?

Definitely the painted. Please share your painting technique and I will share mine I make a lot of turned ornaments. and others cut out with a scroll saw and then hand carved and painted. I found that most paints cake up on plain wood. Besides that, water based paints can raise the grain and make the project look worse. So I take all my finished sanded pieces and coat them with wipe on polyurethane. It dries rather quickly. Then I use liquid water based acrylic paint. I thin a small amount of paint about 2 parts paint to one part water and paint that over the dried Wipe on Poly. It goes on very smooth and dries slightly translucent. I have also used water based latex paint with results that were good over the wipe on poly. I am lousy at mixing colors and so I prefer the acrylic because it comes in 100's of colors already. For my 3D round ornaments, I chuck them in a variable speed drill and spin them slowly while painting. It is much easier to paint stripes using the drill. going about 30 RPMs some of my painted old fashioned fishing gear ornaments:

  38. Another Alex Fox pattern. This is a Trivet this time. Instead of 3 different shades of wood/stain I went with primary colors. The biggest challenge was actually putting the pieces together and getting them in the right spot. Chris

  40. I use window cleaner (aka Windex) for cleaning my airbrushes when spraying acrylic paint. The cheapest I can get from the dollar store.

  41. I picked up one this week too. I looked at the HF one but eventually ended up buying one from Amazon as i liked the idea it had a tank as well, it also came with two brushes lots of jars, bottles and other dodads lol. I'll be giving it a try this weekend.

  42. My wife uses an airbrush for cake decorating and uses Vodka for cleaning hers. Hasn't had any problems - it is the standard design (gravity fed) that does not use a plastic hose like the HF. I picked up the last airbrush our local HF has and used it a few days ago and was satisfied with how it worked - painted a cut out Star of David with it holding the airbrush about 6-8 inches away from the piece. The spray pattern is a bit wide, (compared to my wife's gravity fed airbrush) but a WHOLE lot less than a spray can. Set the compressor to 30psi and adjusted the bottle's brass screw tip to give a medium amount of spray when using it. Clean-up wasn't too bad - but - it seems like more paint is wasted - because of the size and shape of the bottle compared to the small airbrush gravity fed designs. I did look at a few airbrushing YouTube videos and see you can use 'regular' acrylic paint (thinned and strained), and save some money. I paid $5 for a 2 oz bottle of airbrush paint at Hobby Lobby and I understand that is the going rate. I do like the airbrush - it gets paint into the small fret spots without having to use a lot paint compared to using spray cans. And to cut down on wasted paint, when possible, I'll save the painting part for last and paint several pieces at the same time. Finally, it does make me consider getting a standard gravity fed airbrush to see if it would do an even better job.

  43. Well while waiting for my wife while she was in respiratory rehab, I went to Harbor Freight, the sacrifices I make for my wife,,, and purchased one of these air brushes. If it works well I may get another..the jars alone are worth it. While checking out, the checker, a lady, I am sure said she had one and it worked well for decorating cakes until she ran vodka through the air hose and it some how screwed up the hose... ?? I may have to go back and revisit that with her,, next time my wife is in rehab.. Vodka???!!!

  45. I got an airbrush for Christmas last year. I have used it a few times. If using the gravity cup, it does take a lot of time to clean between colours. It also came with the other style. Still don't use it much because it just seems like such a "production" to set everything up. I think I just need to get a better setup in the shop for it.

  46. Scrappile, I think he paints the spoons black to use as a base for checking other paints. The color under some paints will affect the hue of the covering paint. White will make the top paint brighter and black will make it darker. A lot of paints are not opaque, so this can make a difference. Tom

  47. I am getting rid of most of my spray cans and using the Harbor Freight Quick Change airbrush in place of them. I think the "regular" airbrushes have too small a paint cup to cover much area with one filling, so you are constantly stopping to add paint. Also, one of the important parts of using an airbrush is keeping it clean. The HF Quick Change airbrush only needs the bottle cleaned, the other parts of it never touch paint. Most importantly, the learning curve is much shorter. Here is a YouTube video on using one. (1) Scale Model Tips - Testing Harbor Freight's $10 Airbrush - Is It Any Good?? - YouTube I also have a "regular" airbrush that I use on more detailed and smaller work. But I still use brushes sometimes. LOL Tom
