  1. Hi all, I have been busy with actual work. Too many hours and have not done much in Scrollsaw stuff. I have a big project half done. But I wanted to cut something and get it done. A simple project. So I have I have a VET appointment for my cat Monday. So I can give them this Cat project. Total time about 7 hours. 4 hours of cutting, 3 hours of painting. This is my first layered project. @alexfox has a great handle on what makes a good layered project. Some small simple details adds quite a bit to the project but it keeps it simple. I can see I missed a couple of places for painting. But overall it is decent. The slots and holes in the birds adds the simple details. The slots for the curtains allows the depth for folds in the curtains. I like the layered concept. I left the backer off. I think that seeing thru it can work in different places. This picture shows it hanging on garage cabinents dark grey. The vet can put this in the window or set it on a desk to get the see thru look. Most of my cats are white but I wanted a bit more color on this project. So I attempted to color a calico. I might have got too many sections of color. So I will give this to the vet. He just opened up a second building for the wellness care. They probably could use some decorations to spruce up the office. All layers were done with 1/8" baltic birch plywood. Cut with 2/0 MGT pegas blades. Me. Mark Eason

    Alfred Hitchcock

Did an easy cutting of Alfred today using a free stencil that I tinkered with a bit. Sometimes when you hold on to those ugly pieces of wood a use for them turns up. Happy October!!!

Howard McNear as Floyd Lawson. I started to paint the backer red behind the barber pole, but everybody knows, all things Andy Griffith are better in black and white.

    Big cats

Hello, my last cut is a Lynx or a Bobcat, I don't know, but I loved cutting them. I made the pattern from a photo. I used oak wood thickness: 0.393 (10 mm) length: 8.661 (220 mm) width: 7.086 (18 cm) I hope you enjoy. Eric

  6. Here is my latest puzzle. I got the idea from a Pintrest post. I cut and painted this before getting crook, just took some pics and decided it was time to post. I have about a dozen tray puzzles in various stages of completion in the shed. Will post those when finished. This shrink wrapped, I normally take pics before wrapping. Cut from 30mm Radiata Pine

  8. I agree with you Kevin I really like the layered designs but hate consuming all of that BB for one project.

  9. great project and I like Akex foxes patterns but agree Kevin they take a lot baltic birch and that is quite sarce and expensive in our neiborhood

    Well, that was weird

I had an older couple stop by the booth a couple of weeks ago. They had a special mat cut for their grand-kids pictures, eight in all, with a cute saying in the middle. The "mat" was a piece of 1/8 oak plywood with the name of the grand kids laser cut, with and opening for the photo. Surprise, surprise, surprise, along comes grand-kid number nine. So there is a space in the center where #9's picture can go. So I found a font that was close and drew in lines to get it closer to the original font. After cutting it out with the Hegner, I used a wood burning pen to simulate a laser cut. They were very happy with the result, I was not so I didn't take any pictures. Still; weird.

  11. Very nice cutting and painting.. I like the layered projects but have to say they're very expensive to make. I recently did a few layered ornaments.. it's just one ornament but 4 layers.. so it took 4 times the plywood that a single one would take.. not sure it'd bring 4 times the cost if selling it.. LOL. Plywood has recently skyrocketed in price and harder to get.. I may not be making too many more of them layered projects unfortunately.

  12. Thanks Brenda and Paul. Brenda, I use house hold acrylics. Flat and if not available satin. If you get the sample pots they are good value. Once I have painted the colour, I spray a clear gloss lacquer x 2 coats over it all. I use a soft brush and just lay the paint on any old how, then brush it out lightly in the one direction. When dry, cut back with 220 or 360g paper and re-coat. Yellow, Oranges and Reds are pains, in that order for covering and some times 3 coats are required. By cutting back between all coats, including the clear, you tend to knock of any outstanding brush marks and imperfections.

  15. Here's my entry. I made these last year. But this year, I made a tutorial on how to make these fun Jack-O-Lanterns. I posted the video and the article in the Project Workshop area. Pattern is free for SSV Patrons. It uses a standard cedar fence board, so it's super cheap to make. Plus, they're really seem to be crowd pleasers. Hardly anything to the scroll sawing. Super easy.

Hi everyone, Just joined the Scrollsaw Village today. My name is Alan and I live in a small village North of Sheffield in the UK. Got into scrolling about 4 years ago and am really enjoying it. I use an Axminster Trade AT535SS scrollsaw which I believe is basically an Excalibur but with the Pegas blade clamps and am really happy with it. Mostly make small wooden animals, plaques, boxes, trivets and bowls. My other interest is wildlife photography. Looking forward to seeing the things you other guys make and hope to gain knowledge from you more experienced scrollers ! Take care and best regards, Alan.

  17. Howdy! I've been scroll sawing for a handful of years on my DW788. I started out with 2D patterns from Steve Good, moved to some fun boxes, and am mostly cutting compound ornaments when I can get to the saw. I also have an ever growing inventory of patterns and books on the hobby. I enjoy gifting whatever I cut, and always move back to the garage as Christmas approaches. Looking forward to hanging out here a bit and learning from the community.

  20. Welcome to the village, you will find knowledgeable and friendly people that truly enjoy making sawdust. Your 3D cuttings are excellent, may I suggest for the miniature bird houses to glue different thickness of wood to add a new flavour to it.

  24. Those are mighty fine. I also enjoy compound cutting and have done some. It always amazes me, when you pell away the waste, there is something inside that piece of wood that was not there before. One of my favorites is from JEplans.com. If you click on "all plans' and scroll down you will find a Christmas Nutcracker. I have made four of them, very fun to build and paint. I have made them the size of the pattern and enlarged the pattern by about 20%. Some how every time I make one, it disappears.

    New old saw

I was able to pick up an old Hegner Multimax 2 for $50. The only thing I can find wrong with it is that the bellows needs to be replaced. I checked the Advanced Machinery website but they don’t appear to offer a replacement. Any suggestions?

    New old saw

Ray, did the top of that boot stretch enough to fit over what it has to fit over on the saw? My saw is not around 12 years old, Maybe I should buy what you did and have on hand. I will forget about it if the time comes I need one,, heck I will forget about it in 10 minutes! Of course, I would also forget where I stored the spare if I happen to remember I had one.

  29. @Foxfold you can ask or you can read his post: "Cut from 30mm Radiata Pine".. . I read it, but didn't help me, I have never heard of it before. The painting is also a good question. I know he is probably going to say just any old rattle can spray paint, but his painting always stands out, and is so perfect... John, always love your puzzles, always well done and bright and cheery!

  44. Seen this on FB.. I'll add photo for those without FB if they cannot access the link. https://www.facebook.com/TheFamilyHandyman/photos/a.90657113889/10160088695373890/ This in on Family Handyman FB page so it might be on their website too I don't know.. anyway I'd have never thought about it for a miter saw I guess.. I did similar 5 years ago with my K40 C02 Laser. I had just replaced my grille because the bottom rotted out on the old one. Took a piece of left over OSB I had laying around and made a table top from it. The laser is water cooled and I use a 5 gallon bucket for the water and that fits nicely where the LP tank would go, LOL.. so the laser is self contained and on wheels for easy moving around,
