    Tray Puzzles (Lots)

Finally finished a bunch of tray puzzles. These are all cut from 6mm MDF with a 3mm MDF backer. They are A4 size. thanks for looking These 2 are pics of Primary School I work at. The Wife is the Principle. The building is 35 pieces and Mary 20 pieces. I donated these so that the school can raffle them. I have shown Dump Truck Puzzles before. I have completed 4 of them ranging from 14 to 20 pieces. Have already sold 2 These are from a book I down loaded a colouring page and modified it for the Butterflys The Number Puzzles are from the same book as the whales Noah's Ark................ A Steve Goode Pattern. I modified it a little by removing the "Fish" and replacing it with a rabbit. The dove is very small so I have glued that in place. Next ones I will modify a little more by having the dove outside of the ark and repositioning some of the animals.

    Halloween Bat

Made this Bat for Halloween earlier today. The pattern is courtesy of Scrollsaw Workshop. I then drilled 2 small holes and added 2 red LED's for the eyes. A small 3V watch battery powers them. Alan. May have posted this in the wrong section, apologies.

    Sailng with Alex Fox

My wife surprised me again with another Alex Fox pattern. This ship pattern has LOTS of holes. Stack cut it with 1/8" for 2 copies. 1/4" backer and Gloss lacquer. I'll Keep one and one will go to one of my nautical buddies. Another plaque for his man cave.

  5. Had 3 of the grandkids for the weekend. The thirteen year old, Bodhi, selected Steve Good's Door Sill Sleeping Dog, the ten-year old, Harper, chose Rocking Kitties, and the seven year old, Maddox, did the heart out of the practice sheet. What a great way to bridge the years with smiles and more smiles.

  7. These were both stencils found on the internet. I wasn't a huge fan of either singer in the day, though I do like a lot of Queen songs now and David's, "Space Oddity." I also love David's duet with Bing Crosby on Little Drummer Boy. I found this piece of heart pine at a curb where some people are remodeling a century old home. Still highly prefer cutting oak but free is free. When I get this hung it will make number 99 on my shop walls.

  8. Make sure your reviewing the right vac, as far as I know it's only on the one model, the 12g one and it has this on the box If you look back in the thread you will see a YouTube video showing how quiet it is.

  9. So it been a busy week for me and mostly no scrolling. I went to my daughter's soccer match today and on the way back popped into Lowes they had this at a reasonable price $149 including tax so I picked it up. I won't get around to opening this up and trying it for a few days yet as I have so much to do but when I do I'll report back with my opinion !

  10. What John said. MGT blades are a reverse tooth blade that are designed to limit fuzzies, but will not entirely prevent them. A skip tooth blade will only make fuzzies worse. Stick with the MGT blades.

  11. My new Christmas ornaments set. All items made in the same style. I think it is a great variant for small presents for the family: each will get one piece from the set. Or use it for Christmas tree or as home decoration. Each project consist of 4 layers, size about 5,5 x 5,5 inches. Pattern at https://www.etsy.com/shop/AlexFoxUA

    Giraffe

My first finished project two months into my scroll saw journey, this is being given away to my MIL who has a liking for Giraffe's, and for once I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. It's been a busy week, I framed it last Friday and has been in clamps since then, and today was the first chance I got to finish it. Cut on 1/4" BB ply with 1/8 ply backer painted black. The frame is 3/4 reclaimed hard Maple also painted black. The frame and cutting were finished with 3 coats of lacquer. Thanks for looking and even more for the help and advice that have got me this far.

    Cheetah

This is my latest cutting, it’s from one of my own stock photos which Russ Beard so generously made a pattern for. It took me between 60-70 hours due to load shedding in our corrupt country. It’s a first time for me try and introduce some colour to bring out the aggression, not good at it but I tried. The whole pattern was cut with a #0 blade, we don’t have a big selection of blades available to us we have to make with what we got. It will be framed and a back round added when I can find one in my stock photos. All this work is done on a modified Wen Scroll Saw.

  15. Yes we do tend to go off topic especially if a thread runs long. That said thank you for the video! That is amazingly quiet! A great deal @ $150. If I didn't already have two shop vacs and a Festool MIDI I would buy one in heartbeat. Looking forward to your review,

  16. I also get fuzzies on some pieces . I take care of it with a sending mop. I made me one about 5 years ago and it still gets the job done. run the mop slow . I use it on fretwork on 1/4 ply with no breakage. it's a time savor. Bill

  18. I showed my wife Alex's pattern and wanted it right away. Got online and ordered. Not too complicated to cut but the wife wanted a backer. Then she decides she wants 2 more to gift to neighbors. They are all sad because the Hummies left last Tuesday. We'll have to wait until early April to see them again. I stacked cut and it went pretty fast.

    Snowmobile Scene

I was asked a while back to make a snowmobile clock. The customer sent an image of basically a half circle with a snowmobile silhouette. While they did a nice job on the cutting and even design wasn’t too bad but I felt there was a lot of air space with nothing in it. So I designed this by combining a few different patterns to create one. Cut from Cherry using my Hawk saw with a #5 Pegas MFG blade. Finished with Danish oil, may put a top coat of poly on it in a few days as it’s currently drying ( dipped today ). I'm kind od torn on whether I should have cut the hill area on the right by his head off.. kind of blends into his head.

Nice work John.I really like your bright colors you use on your puzzles. You could just make the giraffe a tad bit taller with a longer neck and move it up a bit further from the bottom when you remove the dove. It would fill in the space nicely that way. @Charlie E sorry to hear you are under the weather. Hope you are better soon.

    Getting ready

My favorite is the lights. That's the type I grew up with on our family Christmas tree. They got so hot I would hold the silver tensile/icicles against them and melt them. Good memories. Nice work!

    Tray Puzzles (Lots)

Great looking puzzles! Good move taking the fish out of the boat. And I like the idea of the dove being outside, maybe carrying an olive branch. I don't cut any MDF. I ripped some in my carport once trying to make some cheap moulding and the amount of dust was incredible. How is the dust compared to wood when scrolling. I am once again sick from breathing sawdust even though I almost always wear a mask.

  26. Thanks for the video. Sent me down the rabbit hole of looking at it. One of the reviews I saw had the guy replacing his Rigid vac with this because the Rigid is loud. I have a Rigid and it is loud. Would swap out in a heartbeat but they don't seem to be available in Canada. Could order through a couple of places but then the exchange and shipping make it way to expensive. sigh!

  27. Thank you all for the comment and advice. My saw is Excalibur 16 and I don't pay attention to the position of the blade. I will from now on I will report the fuzz situation when I cut next. Thank again

  36. I was cutting some 3/4" walnut this afternoon and after reading your post, I took notice of how my cuts were coming out and it's true. I was getting some very minor fuzzies too. But, not bad enough that I ever felt there was a problem. After I got done with the cutting I got out my spindle sander and did a bit of shaping and that took care of what fuzzies I had.
    1 point
  37. It's really the nature of sawing, you will end up with some "Fuzzies" on the bottom of a cut. Reverse teeth blades do reduce it considerably, but not entirely. I always run a sander over the reverse and that takes care of everything.

    Cardinal Puzzle

Cardinal Puzzle designed by Sarah Lyn Chamberlain, found in the new issue #89 of Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts. I used 1/2" Hard Maple and cut on the EX21 (at home) using FD UR #3 blade. Stained with Samam Stain and dipped in Shellac diluted with denatured alcohol. Sanding with a Mac Mop between coats. Fun to have artists in studio to add the twigs before shrink wrapping.

  44. I downloaded Steve Good's mantel clock. It was easy to cut. I had a poblem with the 1/4" BBPW. It was a 3 x 4' sheet and it looked good but once I started cutting the pieces, I saw there were voids in the layers. I figured I could fill them in on the edges. It sortof worked but was not happy with the result. The edge grain is what makes this an interesting project. I call the place where I bought the wood and they said they have been having quality problems since the wood comes from Russia. Offered to refund if I returned what I had not used but it is a 60 mile round trip and I would use it in another project. Has anyone else have this issue? To cover it up, I painted with Black lacquer and my wife had some gold leaf markers to cover the end grain.

  45. This Sue Mey pattern caught my eye. Made out of birch and cedar scraps. Linseed oil on most but the colorful one has oak stain on the front part. I think I light the white light one best.

  49. My basement shop is relatively small and the my Festool Midi has a very long cord, so when I need to use it for my RO or track saw I can just wheel it into the adjoining room. I run the Festool at low to mid range. I added the trap a must with all of the small pieces I cut. As you can see it catches a lot of stuff. I also added the union (swivel) so that I can easily swing the upper tube out of the way without messing with its adjustment. The picture of my suction tubes is an old one before I added the trap and swivel. the whole assembly is attached to my Hawk with a couple of Mag switches. So I can move the whole assembly to my EX 16 which I use for most of my smaller projects.

  50. Most recent "scary" cut was H.Botas' pirate skull. It just checked all the right boxes for me, and was a fun cut. The pirate owl (cuz why not?) and wolf were fun as well, and the six cuts are my standard Halloween decorations at work (pirate skull has been added to that group now as well). Not sure if there's any defining "requirements" as to why I cut what I cut. Its just gotta hit me the right way in whatever emotion it evokes.
