I also have been perplexed by the vanishing act of 3M 45 spray adhesive in stores. I finally found that my local Ace Hardware had supplies. While Ace prices are a bit high if you are a devoted 45 user you may want to take a look. My local price at Ace is $8.59 for the 10.5oz can.3 points

Home Depot gives Veterans a 10% discounts for instore and online orders. Needless to say I purchase quite a bit of supplies from them. Much of their items they will also ship to my home. I used to use 3M 45 spray glue. I can't seem to find it anymore. I'm always up to tying new products. Saw this Roberts Glue online on HD site so I ordered a can to give it a try. Sprays a really heavy coat and is a bit messy. If you zoom in on the paper you can see how heavy the coat is. I tried putting a different nozzle on it but no improvement. Really sticks well. A bit cheaper than 3M. I've used about a half of a can and nozzle hasn't clogged yet. I think I will be buying more.2 points

very simplistic fence for scroll saw
Lucky2 and one other reacted to zimmerstutzen for a topic
I am primarily a turner, but I make a lot of ornaments for charity and use the scroll saw in the process. I need to cut some silhouettes of figures (whales, shakes, flip flops, boats, etc) and also the biggest pain was cutting 1/4 inch and under dowels to equal length without splintering them. The table saw was simply out of the question for such little work, same for the band saw. I tried measuring and marking the dowels and cutting them on the scroll saw but got too many differing lengths that were a pain to even out. So I came up with a idea. I used two HF shop spring clamps and a new paint mixing stick to make a fence on the right side of the table. I measured the distance from the saw blade to the paint stick to get 2.5 inches and then proceeded to cut a 36 inch 1/4 inch dowel into 2.5 inch sections. I went slow through the blade and kept splintering edges to a very bare minimum and was happy when I stood them on end and all but the last were dead even in length.2 points -

Apologies for not posting in a while but I fell ill earlier in the year and have not been able to do much but I hope you are all well and I will get caught up with all your projects Anyway sorry onto the project made using 1/4 inch bb plywood using a #2 spiral blade then painted with acrylic paints and spray varnished and while still wet a sprinkle of glitter made for a customer whose little girl loves mini mouse,I adapted a colouring in page of mini I found online, thanks for looking take care2 points -
Thanks to you all. I've admired the Hegner saws since the mid 1980's. Maybe in the old Garrett Wade catalogs(?) and the ads in Fine Woodworking.. But truthfully the beautiful Hegners are outside my price range. The used ones I see online are not complete or look as if they've been ridden hard and put up wet. So that's Hegner, King and Jet brands in the smaller throat depth arena (and thanks for the size correction KMMCrafts). It sort of comes down to the last two for me then. Living on retirement and a shrinking nest egg, I'll be saving for a while and liquidating some other hobby items to help fund any other new saw. Trying to learn peaks and pitfalls of some of the different brands does take time but I enjoy the search if I believe there's a good answer. I've learned from study that there can be QA issues when some models and brands start being made elsewhere. Some have electronic variable speed bugs. Many things seem to be sort of a planned gamble and give/take on features. I forgot about Black Friday Sales. Hadn't considered the possibilities of sales for that. Hopefully I can locate a deal. Thank you each again. Don2 points

Hi All. I just added 2 new special interest groups: Craftmakers and Food & Drink. Craftmakers is a discussion group to share other crafting, DIY, home improvement, making, etc. Food & Drink is a discussion group to share recipes, kitchen gadgets, meal planning, etc. For those who don't know about Groups, this is a fun little corner of SSV for SSV Silver & Gold patrons. They're usually off-topic discussions about other interests. Right now, we have 4 groups: Laser & CNC Woodturning Craftmakers Food & Drink You can access the groups under the Community Tab, there's a link to Groups. If you want an overview of groups, you can find that here. If you are a SSV Silver or Gold Member, you can browse the groups here. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the new areas!2 points

Hi All. For the last few years, I've been creating custom ornament business kits. It basically is a scroll saw business kit with everything you need to promote, create, and sell personalized Christmas ornaments. Everybody seemed to really like it, so I created another version with all new designs for 2022! I like to think of it as a mini scroll saw business-in-a-box. With this kit, you can create as many custom ornament patterns as you want. You can easily personalize them with someone's name or date. You can sell your custom ornaments to friends and family, online places like Etsy, or for craft fairs and church bizarres. You can also sell custom patterns to your fellow scrollers! Here's an overview of how the kit works: This year's Custom Ornament Kit is on sale for 50% off through Cyber Monday! So right now, you can pick it up for only $10, which is a screamin' deal! It's my way of saying Thank You for being a part of SSV and making it such a great place to be. I hope you find it useful. Happy Holidays, y'all!1 point

With the change in hours at work, my time on the saw has been limited... very limited! I finally finished this cut from a BirchBark pattern using Maple with a Birch backer. The frame is pre-shaped Walnut and I shimmed the corners for strength. The cut is stained with Minwax Natural and the backer is stained with Minwax Espresso. The frame was pre-finished although I did touch it up with Minwax Dark Walnut stain. For the first time I used my new air sprayer with Polyacrylic and was pleased with the results. I cut it using Pegas #2/0, #0 and #1 spiral blades. I stack cut this but the other piece was Birch and delaminated in places when removing the shelf liner. I hope to paint it in the near future in hopes of hiding the delamination. I've about decided to start placing my wood face to face when doing cuts. I know I could only do this on pieces that were not limited in left or right such as patterns with words. But doing so will prevent delamination from happening on the face of the projects. For instance, the Jim Blume Stagecoach I cut was a double stack and faced different directions. I tell people one stage is going east and the other is going west.1 point

I have no experience using a scroll saw but am looking at either the Pegas or Seyco scroll saw with stand. I am an experienced hobbyist woodworker having previously made cabinetry and furniture and am also learning to use a lathe. I know the Pegas and Seyco are not inexpensive but I prefer to spend more money now then getting something less expensive and later regretting the purchase. Both saws are similarly priced although the Seyco does include the stand. I have read quite a bit and watched a number of videos regarding both units. There seem to be a lot of “pros” and not many “cons” for either saw. Pegas certainly has a much larger retail network both in store (Klingspor and Woodcraft) and on-line whereas Seyco appears to be available only through their own website. Customer service seems to be outstanding through either saw’s on-line retailers. My main concern with the Seyco is the service and parts availability should this small enterprise close shop. Anyone with experience with either or both saws with a recommendation or general advice care to help in my decision?1 point

Thanks again for the suggestions and input. I myself am in Southern Kentucky, USA. About 50 miles north of Nashville, TN. On Craigslist "near " me there are several Type 2 DeWalt 788s, numerous copies of my little Wen 16 inch and same saw with different brand badges, several cast iron spring upper retraction vintage saws and some I never heard of. Same situation on Facebook Marketplace. Maybe it's a population density and regional issue. Also I would not buy without seeing the saw and hearing it run. Which right thetre limits my options I know... I'll for sure keep my eyes and ears open, and as suggested, watch for holiday sales. Maybe I'll happen on an estate sale with a lovingly cared-for saw that would serve me proudly and well at a good price. One day, my own tools with be just that to some other fortunate woodworker! I agree with Ray.. plenty of used saws out there that are high end saws like Hawk and Hegner.. older Excalibur 16" saws too.. Hawk doesn't make a small saw anymore but there is plenty of those old Hawk 12", 14", and 16" saws out there that can be had from $100 - 250.. or a good Hegner 14" saw for a little bit more.. On those older Hawk and Hegners though.. you probably want to make sure it's a variable speed saw rather than a single or 2-3 speed.. Hawk and Hegners are very easy to work on should they ever need something addressed..1 point -
Pegas or Seyco
OCtoolguy reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
As a Pegas dealer, yes, Seyco does service Pegas scroll saws. but does not have access to Pegas parts. This is a consideration if the saw is under warrantee.1 point -
I've heard of a few that had issues with the customer support of the Pegas saw and that is where Ray came in and saved them by now providing support for the Pegas saw as well. 3 years ago, I was facing the exact same dilemma and Opted for the Seyco. I've had my Seyco saw for 2 1/2 year now and have not regretted it one bit! And I have the support to back the saw for many years to come!1 point

Welcome to the village!! Both saws are great saws and a good investment. I personally would also go with Pegas for the blade clamps and the angle adjustment mechanism is different ( not necessarily better but more user friendly is probably a better way to describe that ) . As for parts.. IF you're mechanical incline enough to repair a saw yourself I think probably most of the mechanical parts are basically they same.. as both the Pegas and Seyco were both designed after the Excalibur as is the King and Jet brands.. each have a minor difference of mostly blade clamps and or table size or angle adjustment fixtures. But the main working parts I'm pretty certain are pretty interchangeable.. only those that share the same size though.. I know Jet makes a 18" saw.. so the link rods inside might be different length but I would bet the bearings and sleeves are the same.. Anyway, I would think a mechanical inclined person could make parts work from one saw to the next without too much issue. Anyway as I said Pegas have great blade clamps and many folks that get a Jet, King, or Seyco end up buying Pegas clamps for their saw.. so why not just start with that saw.. they are so similar to one another really a toss-up other than those blade clamps and the more user friendly angle adjustment..1 point
-
Both great saws but the Pegas has features that the Seyco doesn't. The blade clamps are better and the head tilting mechanism is better. Granted, Ray at Seyco offers fantastic service but you already addressed that. Unless you need a large table, I'd buy the Pegas. I have 2 Excaliburs on homemade stands so that isn't an issue unless it's important to you. Either way, you will have a great saw.1 point

@Tallbald, first I ask your location. Then I want to say this. Regarding used Hegner saws, they may look bad but they don't wear out. They are built like tanks and require very little maintenance. So with that said, there are at least 6 of them near me in So. Cal. One is $600 and it is a jewel and 100% complete. Even has a cover. Don't be afraid of a used saw. Just do your due diligence and check them out. I have 3 saws, all bought used. I've never had a new saw. You have a large contingent of folks here with vast knowledge of all brands so ask questions and read all the past conversations regarding this subject. I hate to see anybody spend more money than necessary. Especially in this economy and being on a fixed income as most of us are. Don't be in a hurry. There's a great deal just waiting for you just around the corner.1 point -

I've bought my 45 from Amaz in the past since I get free shipping and my local box stores are priced crazy! Typically I would save up to $3 a can that way. Something has changed with 3m and either it is no longer making/shipping 45 or something else is happening (I'll leave that to the imagination, but I suspect it's the same place my bread and cheese are hiding these days as well)! I have 77 that I've been using and lots of the Elmers (not really a fan of elmers, it slips). I'll check out Ace though last time I bought 3m from Amaz it was $6.48 a can! $9.99 at my local Ace stores!1 point -
I wasn't aware that HD gave veterans the 10% discount! I know that Lowes has that for the Veterans which I have and do most of our business there. Now as for the glue, I have tried different brands, some cheaper, some more expensive but always come back to to the red can, 77! Erv1 point

I found that shaking the can was important but I used a very light spray and let it sit fir a few minutes til almost dry. Sort of like contact cement. I found it to stick well on shelf paper or blue tape.1 point
-
I have used the small 4oz. ? can of the elmers and at first try I didn't like it and got the same results... I found you have to shake the can up good and also have to be kind of heavy at spraying it.. I think you also have to let it set for a few seconds after spraying? I don't remember for sure now but it was a learning curve to use as opposed to the 3M sprays that I had been using.. I think they seem to have the smallest of the cans that you can get.. really handy for those of us that don't really use much of the sprays.1 point
-
I have a can sitting on the shelf that I bought a couple weeks ago. I couldn't get it to stick my pattern very good to shelf paper. Maybe I don't know how to use it.1 point

I order a lot from them as well, I don't have one very close to me like I do Menards or Lowes but they ship to me and they always have better deals for the things I need. I very seldom use spray glue anymore and most times when I need it the can won't work so I buy very small cans, LOL1 point

I think the King is a 16" saw not a 18" unless they made a new one that I'm not aware of yet.. The King is the same thing as the old excalibur.. I don't know the prices anymore but I think I would go with it over the Jet myself.. I'm not sure where you get parts for a Jet saw, but I know the King being the same as a Excalibur and Seyco.com sells Excalibur parts. I've heard Jet saws have issues with the upper clamp mechanism jamming up IF you're not well informed about how to adjust them. I like the idea of the clamping system but I see many folks buying the Pegas chucks and pitching the Jet ones in the trash so.. at least you do have that option if the clamps don't work as well as you hoped. Also some of the Jets had issues with the reverse tooth blades.. table sits too high and the reverse teeth aren't utilized as they should be.. Maybe this has been corrected by now I don't know. IF price is your concern you might look for used high end saws like Ray mentioned the Hegner.. If space is an issue and you're using the stand made for the saw, they use the same stand for the 16" and the 21" saws so you really aren't saving much if any space.. I think the Hegner has a pretty compact stand.. New ones aren't very cheap though. Edit: Black Friday is just around the corner.. Jet and many others will likely be discounting prices..1 point
-
Yeah, I get that too sometimes.. I either dip a second or third time sometimes or if it's a rush order I will just top coat with polyurethane, typically the water base stuff as it dries really fast.. I'd rather use Lacquer but oil and Lacquer argue with each other too much, and more times than not it'll mess up the finish.. if not right away it will a few weeks later.1 point
-
I didn't see the higher priced one. I have the cheaper one and sometimes the wood edges look a bit dry after a few days of drying depending on the wood type.1 point

Cottontail Express
Phantom Scroller reacted to Scrollshrimp for a topic
Hey everyone, Here is my latest project. The pattern is called "Cottontail Express" and is from a book I purchased called "North American Wildlife Patterns For The Scroll Saw" by Lora S. Irish. I think the wood is Yew as I was given a piece some months ago and it is about 3/4 of an inch thick. After cutting, I simply gave it a couple of coats of oil. Hope you like it, constructive criticism welcomed, Regards, Alan.1 point -
