Three Totally Different Portrait Projects
Alexander Fadeev and 9 others reacted to FrankEV for a topic
First is a 11” x 12” Russ Beard Pattern that I cut well over a year ago, simply called “Leopard”. Coloration was done using Artis Oil paints at that time. However, I was not happy with how it looked, so it sat on the shelf. I only revisited it a short time ago and with some improved painting skills I have developed and a little work with the paint brush, I believe it now looks better. Its been some time so I’m guessing, but I think the cut panel is 5/32” solid core Maple which has now been affixed to a painted black ¼” BB ply backer. The Fame is 1 3/4” Pine with a black Lacquer finish. I think he has his eyes on you! The second is a “Wile E Coyote – Standing” image I converted into an 11”x 17” scroll saw pattern. Since my previous “Wile” project left my collection for a new home rather quickly, I decided to fill the void with another, but of course, a different pose. The cut panel is 5/32” solid core Birch, hand painted with Artist Acrylic Paints. The frame is also 1 3/4” pine with a primed and painted gloss Black Finish. The third is also of a free, non-credited image, simply called “Sketch of a Sailboat” that I converted into an 11” x 17” scroll saw pattern. I found this image, although very raw, very intriguing and works very well as a piece of Scroll Saw Art. The cut panel is 5/32" solid core Maplet hat was left natural and only the backer was hand painted with Artist Acrylic Paints. The frame is once again 1 3/4” pine with a primed and painted gloss Black Finish. All cuting was done with various Pegas regular and spiral blades and all assembled panels were protected with multiple coats of clear Gloss Lacquer. My work has been coming in groups because I tend to leave the frame making until I can do more than one. Comments and critiques always welcome.10 points -

Another tip, that I use that may help a few members. For small items such as Xmas Tree Decos, or small sections of an item that requires a bit of colour, I use Nail Polish, What's left after I do my nails There are some fantastic metallics and glitters available in nail polish and if you go to the discount shops you can pick up pots from 50c each. Another good source is chemist shops when they are getting rid of unwanted stock and have a tub full discounted. If the polish is a bit thick a few drops of lacquer thinner fixes that.8 points

Santa Gnome
barb.j.enders and 4 others reacted to meflick for a topic
While I was working on my ornament patterns to submit to the 2022 Ornaments for Charity Book I worked on a Santa Gnome pattern. I decided that he might be a little more then would work for the Ornament book as I felt you really needed to see him in "color" to fully understand the look I was going for. As a result, I didn't submit him for the Charity Book but I did want to provide him here for anyone who was interested. I haven't cut him out myself yet. Maybe I will get to it soon. If you give him a try, would love to see them. Feel free to add your pictures in this thread, or just tag me if you post one over in Bragging rights. This could be used for @john nelson's modge podge method as well. You can cut the individual pieces out and layer them, just cut the outline piece out and paint the other parts, or even carve in the other pieces perhap. I think it can be created in many ways and look forward to seeing what some of you might do with him. I'm attaching a couple of different files so hopefully I have provided the format that works for you. If not, let me know and I can provide others if needed. Santa Gnome.svgSanta Gnome.pdf5 points -

Hi Brenda Don't do it, if you cut one, you will be cursed and will have to make more of different variety next thing you know you will have more gnomes that you know what to do with. You have been warned.... They are cute little buggers once done though3 points

finally got the order finished.. last two
Alexander Fadeev and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I have posted a few of the results of my first Christmas order and I stated that the request involved several patterns that I was not fond of myself but a customer's request is not to be argued with. I add some of my own colorization and backer boards that were not part of the pattern as well as framing some that really was not part of the item either. In these last two item I added both a frame and on one, corner decorations to try and help it to be a little better appreciated by the receivers of these items. Dick heppnerguy2 points -
And I had presents to hand out to all the birthday scrollers. Bummer, I guess I'll take them back to the car dealers.2 points

Spiral Blades
scrollingforsanity reacted to Scrappile for a topic
Just putting this out there, May be of use to someone that wants to use spiral blades. This is a video by Charles Dearing. He is what started me on spirals many years ago... He ha s great pattern designer. His site is Woodenvisions.com. Keep in mind, Charles has never used a straight blade. Most the pictures he scrolled were big, I mean in the 3 ft., by 4 ft. range. He has always use a #5 spiral blade. He video helped me get started with spiral, although I do it quite differently than him and I mostly is a 3/0 sized spiral when I use them.. But this is a good video to get started, them experiment and find out what works best for you.1 point -
Making slow progress on my Christmas project
FrankEV reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Here are a couple more for my wife's cousin's Christmas order. I have two more to post and I should have them packed and ready for the post office on Monday. I thought they were a little the way she ordered them so I framed one and added a little color to the other one. I am happy to be getting these finished and on their way soon Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Well, sounds like you did about everything that I would have suggested. You said you adjusted the set screw, how did you adjusted it? It should be adjusted to a point where it gives some resistance about a 1/4” above the upper arm. See my photos and excuse the mess as I work a lot in the shop this time of year. Another thing to check is maybe your thumb screws or set screws need replacing or at a minimum sanded.1 point

John B reacted to WayneMahler for a topic
Never gave that a thought. The wife has a ton of it laying around she don't use. If it is thick I have acetone to help with that. I think it would be a better solution than lacquer thinner which I also keep. I'll mention it to her since she does the painting of things. Might work better for ornaments. Thanks for posting this.1 point -

Missed this thread ... My hearing is damaged due to chemo and I have a problem hearing higher ranges, so it's a kind ofe waste for me to buy top notch headphones. For general use gardening, sawing what ever I have a pair of Bluetooth JBL TUNE710BT they are pretty cheap about $65 and the sound is pretty good (they are over ear but in a pretty small form) they are extremely comfortable and I could wear them all day ! And also the battery life is phenomenal at a stated 50hrs per charge and I have no reason to question this. I may charge them once a week if that.1 point -

Wow that leopard is amazing. Wile E Coyote put a smile on my face . I am not into sailing but it looks terrific. All in all, well done. Marg1 point

Yea the "sketchy sailing" might do well in Florida as long as the water is calm. That is No huricanes clouds in the picture. Wiley is always liked good cartoons after school. But I like cats so the leapord is my favorite.1 point

Try to picture me eating crow. You are right and that drawing is wrong. So relieving the bottom of the plate is so that the upper arm CONNECTING ROD doesn't come in contact with the plate. Bottom line here is, take as much material off the underside of that plate as necessary. I'm not sure how adjusting the tension rod has anything to do with the knocking unless having it too sloppy might cause a rattle. So it's two separate things entirely. MY BAD!1 point

Beeswax alternative
barb.j.enders reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I've seen soy wax but have not tried it.. Many of my customers like the sweet smell that the natural beeswax gives my woodwork pieces and as Wayne mentioned.. I don't know how it'd do with the mineral oil. I don't use Mineral Spirits in my wax mix.. just the oil and beeswax and heat it until the wax melts down. I know supposedly the MS will evaporate but how will the smell affect the mixture.. My wife can't stand the smell of the Johnson's wax whatever is in that.. be the beeswax she likes the smell of.. Might have to watch her to make sure she's not eating my beeswax mix.1 point -

Last year I purchased Business kit 2021 edition hoping to generate sales of a new product at my local craft fairs. Unfortunately all the shows I usually sell at were all cancelled once again. This year the shows are a go and I was at one last week where I sold 12 and I am absolutely amazed with the response. I also just purchased the 2022 edition pattern set. Really looking forward to my next show this upcoming weekend. Many thanks to Travis for the program Regards Brian1 point -

The girl at the thrift store complained today that I made everybody else's name but hers . I opened my phone and showed hers waiting for paint as I asked an employee to text me ger favorite color and never did . It's aquamarine I found out from her.1 point -
A nice effort. I sometimes find that the paper scissors, pencil and tape is much quicker the mucking around on the computer. Cutting a single thickness of thin ply is a PITA. I will usually stack 2,unless it is name or photo, and the chances are the second will sell as well and it turns out quicker, I think.1 point
-
That is terrific. I am like you I like scissors and tape, I also like black marker pens and white out. Marg1 point

@heppnerguy Dick, please don’t be concerned that I was upset by your comments. I was not, you have always been encouraging to me (and everyone else) since I first visited the Village and started my scrolling journey. I realized you were still just encouraging me to stretch my skills here and took it as such. I have tried many new things with my scrolling because of encouragement of you and so many others here in the Village including some fretwork. I just wanted to explain, that I had tried it but at this time, it wasn’t my favorite type of work, especially really detailed pattern like this one. I find them beautiful, and know the patience, skill and time involved and admire those of you who do them. I just have learned, I can’t drill all those holes, unclamp, rethread the blade in a new hole, re-clamp, cut another small segment and do it over and over and over again. At present, I have learned I don’t have the patience or skill required. I do do a few fretwork patterns, but I limit the size and holes needed. if I ever give a detailed one a go, you’ll be the first I tag to see it. in the interim, I will admire yours and others works on them and challenge myself in other ways.1 point

You know me, I sometimes start a big project and lose interest before finishing.. It had 8 layers. I cut them all out and decided after the first four layer the last four really did not do much for the overall project... It is on my "someday I might finish" shelf along with my wooden gear clock.. and some others. Yours looks great.1 point
