    One for the shop.

Since I cut my finger almost all the was off, I have been a fan of pushbocks for the tablesaw. I usually just use a leftover stick or my plastic one. Here is the first one that I made in my shop. I have another one in the works.

Had a productive day yesterday. Got a few thing cut. Got this Cardinal cut, sanded and finished! Wood is Aspen, cut with #5 mg blade. Finish is Osmo for the red & black and some other poly for the feet & beak.

I think I might be in the market for a new band saw! I found I like cutting solid wood a lot more than plywood, don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with plywood but I like the results I get from real wood better. I've got quite a bit of nice 3/4 hardwoods in the 6 to 8in range and a absolute load of old barn timbers at my FIL farm which clean up real nice. My old 14 jet is on its last legs, I bought it secondhand as it is, and it's really not up to resawing a whole ton of lumber. So when Christmas is over I'll start looking !

I really like my Grizzly G0555LX. I have used it for maple, oak, ebony, etc, and have re-sawed on it many times. I have some birch logs that I will be cutting down for making bowls, and will be purchasing the riser kit for it. This is one of two non-USA-Made machines in my shop, and I am fine with that. The saw just keeps on going, and has no issues doing it. All bearing guides and runs very quiet. Smoothest cutting band saw I have ever owned, and I've owned a few. Of course, the first thing I did before I even turned it on was to put a good blade on it. The stuck blade was hardly sharp at all, which I expected. If you can find it on sale, which it does go on sale often, and you decide on it, snatch it up. I don't regret mine Dan

I took the pattern from the last one and shrunk it down so I could use one of the short candles that came in the set. This one is 4 inches but I have a 2 & 3 also. Not sure yet which one will look better. Gotta wait for dark.

  8. The last push block I made, I gave to my brother. This one I made for myself unless someone buys it. Poplar and alder handle, Rough cut oak base, replaceable cedar cleat. Finished with satin poly.

I own a 14" Grizzly G0457 with a 2 HP motor. I have used it to resaw a variety of hardwoods up to and including Jatoba which is extremely hard. I would encourage 1.5 hp or greater for resawing.

I have the Shopfox 1706. Identical to yours, same stamping, same fence setup etc. Different color scheme and name plate. I did add a 6” riser to it. I have it about ten years. It does what it’s supposed to do. I don’t think the motor is big enough after adding the riser. Plus, if I’m not mistaken, with this unit, you can only use 1/2” blades. One caveat, is I’ve never tried a carbide blade.

The Grizzly is the one I have. I have had no problems with it that were not operator error. A band saw us something that I think you should have one for every blade you may use.. I HATE changing blades in a bandsaw. But I think that is a good saw. But it is the only one I have had with the except an old Craftsman I inherited from my Dad. I added a 12 in riser to mine.. Don't do much re-sawing.. Want to try, but am not sure what is the best blade for it.

I also have the same Grizzly as Dan but the anniversary black color addition, I bought the riser block and resaw fence for it as well.. I think I got it in 2014 or around that time.. no problems with it at all.. I don't do much bandsawing but mainly use it to resaw as needed... so it hasn't really been used a lot.. not commercially like I use a scroll saw type use anyway, LOL

Received a flyer from Rockler yesterday. They have a black Friday deal on a Jet JWBS-14SFX for $1399. I will buy nothing but a Jet piece of equipment now mainly because of their excellent customer service. They also have the best warranty. Good luck deciding.

Thanks Phil, It's not that I don't like it but it's a bit like me old and wore out. As I said I bought it used over 10 years ago, it had been rode hard and put away wet. I upgraded it then but if I was to keep it now it would need a total rebuild bearings have play in them, one wheel has a slight wobble and the motors tired. It's done it's duty and it's time for a new one, I was going to replace it last year....... besides who doesn't like a new Toy !

I too have a Grizzly band saw and overall I have been very happy with it. I will offer one word of caution. If you need service as I did, there are only two authorized service centers in the country. One is in Missouri and the other is in Bellingham, WA. Technical support is very friendly and will do everything possible to help solve problems over the phone. However if service is needed your options are limited. I ended up having to drive my saw to the Washington location a round trip distance of over 1200 miles. That was still cheaper than trying to ship a 200 lb. saw. they fixed the problem for a reasonable price and it's worked great since. No other complaints. Jim

This is exactly what I've been looking at, everyone who has one says the same as you. If I do decide in this one I'll get the riser kit with it.

    Drill press tables

Several years ago, I had a project that required drilling large holes in 1/4-inch steel. I purchased one of these, thinking I would sell it later after I finished my project. It quickly became one of my most used tools and touches every project. It now sports a fancy Magwitch fence.

    Drill press tables

I like this idea, but I never use the fence on my drill press, so it stays to the back all the time of the table, and it is only there to keep stuff from falling off the back. My table came with the drill press and sat unused for two or more years until I decided to use it or get rid of it. I kept it because I liked having disposable squares.

  35. I order my Flying Dutchman blades from Mike's workshop. I always get them quickly. They send a email confirming the order, a second email confirming payment and a third email telling me the blades have been mailed. All three email are on the same day. I call that pretty darn good service. Plus his prices are quite reasonable,

  37. My wife and I have been vendors at local and regional craft shows for maybe 8 years now. For health and pet care reasons though we have over time reduced from 6 yearly shows to 2. Since retiring, my crafty wife has always made custom costume jewelry, ornamented household goods and accessories and shirts. I have made and sold turned wood items and woodcraft household accessories, as well as custom heavy duty gun belts and gun holsters cut and crafted from half hides using my saddle sewing machine named, "Bertha Jo". Last weekend was the second and last of our yearly shows and I was pleased to see a pretty fair amount of offered hand crafted wood items. I got to talk to two serious scroll sawyers and learned that their offerings are almost always well-received and that good sales numbers are their norm rather than the exception. It pleases me to hear that customers seem to appreciate the quality of their work, and in most cases are willing to pay for the crafter's time and effort. I'd have taken photos of their tables but I always am concerned that the photographed vendor thinks I'm involved in "industrial espionage" and cataloging their product line to attempt infringement. So I just commit their beautiful works to memory. Anyway, despite the economy, established shows like the two we vend at seem to be attended by serious buyers who don't mind parting with their dollars in exchange for creative, well-made items. Just wanted to share here my experienced observations. Don

  38. We're more of a "hang around the breakfast bar/counter and eat" than a formal "sit at the table" kinda family (mostly cuz the table is reclaimed 150-yr old barn wood table that my wife bought: its uneven and leans alarmingly, but is still rather sturdy). So no fancy centerpieces to put folks into any festive holiday moods or inspire Martha Stewart, but I do have the occasional trivet that get used during the two times a year we use that table.

  40. I have made many of these turkeys based on a Patrick Speilman pattern. The turkey is one of those patterns that doesn't look like much on paper and then looks excellent after you cut it and put it together. I made the first ones for a preshool that wanted them for the kids to paint, and I have been making them ever since.

  42. I hadn't planned on buying this book because, if I order through Fox Chapel the shipping and exchange rates make it way too expensive. I was just at the local bookstore with my (visiting) cousin and saw it. Pick it up and said, "This one is coming home with me". Got to the register and my cousin picked up the tab for being a house guest!! Yeah me!

  44. Congrats on the new toy, I'll be interested in seeing what you think of it once you get your feet wet. I love my laser as it's just another tool to play around with in the shop and it does things my scroll saw or no other tool can do. Post your progress and updates in the Laser groups.. many die hard scroll sawers will slap your hand for getting a new tool like that and posting it here, LOL

    Another one done!

Danny, I've got 3 patterns and chose this one to try out. I made the first one full size, the second one is the shortest and the 3rd one will be mid-size. My wife wanted a full set to sit on our kitchen counter. Anyway, to my point. I'm going to make them in sets of 3 and see what the market will bear. Knowing what folks are willing to pay for things that are home-made does give me the incentive to try more. It's coming to mind that people are starting to want quality instead of the Chinese crap that is everywhere and are will to pay for it. So, with that in mind, I'm going to start these out at $149.95 for a set including the battery operated candles. Plus shipping of course. I'm not going to use Etsy either. Why give them a share of the profits? Just my 2 cents.
