    Coat Hanger

I think it's been 83 years since I last posted some work. I did this on a whim. The deer silhouette is walnut finished in BLO/MS mix and the antler is from a white-tailed deer. I plan to use button pegs to cover the screws. Sorry for the crappy photo, I'm out of practice.

I couldn't get ok with the house not being red and having Kevin's one light on. So I took it apart and fixed it and gave Kevin his sweater too. Crowbars up!

  4. I do try though. When I'm cutting I'm at peace with the world , but everything else that goes with it bogs me down . The brain isn,t what it used to be and I need every short cut I can take to get er done! These ornaments are cut from the dollar tree large thin already cut shapes for $1.25. Turkeys and pumpkins I can get about 5 ornaments from each .I cut over 40 but keep forgetting to snap a photo.

    3-D cuts

I cut my 3d ornaments from hardwoods such as maple, ash, walnut, poplar. I think poplar is the easiest. Balsa would be too fragile. I cut with a FD Polar 5 or PS Super sharks #5. Typically, I use 1-1/4" thick material. You have to be patient cutting thick material and go slow. These are some 3D ornaments that I have posted before and clamps I use.

  11. I have cut a lot of mini birdhouses and have used a lot of different hard woods. Walnut, maple, cherry, ash, popular and some unidentified as I used to be a woodturner and I have a lot of scraps left over. I typically have used a blade with no reverse teeth. I use either a Flying Dutchman Polar blade #5 or a Pegas super skip #6. I find that is is best to wrap the blank with packing tape as it seems to lubricate the blade. I have done some things in pine or balsa too depending on the project. I teach a scrolling course and we do a tulip and an ornament and that is always pine and then I use a #5 or 7 Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse as it leaves a nice finish. You have to make sure the blade is sharp.

  12. I made all of our family Initial Ornaments for Christmas this year. All have been delivered except 4. I have been informed that this needs to become a yearly tradition. I made a total of 30 of these. Cedar wood Minwax natural stain and 4 coats of rattle can lacquer.

  13. These are two of Steve Good's patterns I cut for my grandchildren (trucks) and son and daughter (cross). I actually cut one other truck for another grandson but he is a little older and I plan to stain his rather than color. The colors or the other three grandchildren's favorite colors. I still have to glue and spray a finish. I plan on using Polyacrylic.

  18. I made 18 of the small Nativities and about the same number of larger ones. On the larger, about half were natural and the others were painted flat white. The small ones have a hook for hanging and given to relatives as my annual handmade ornament. Some of the larger ones were used as table decor at a church luncheon and then became door prizes along with some angels. All patterns by Steve Good. 1/8" and 1/4" plywood.

    3-D cuts

I ordered some new blades to try on 3D cutting. I ordered Flying Dutchman FD-LX5 XLblades and the Pegas #5 Skip. I have only tried the Dutchman on once, it did a good job, but I have not tried the Pegas on yet.

    Scroll Saw Artist

A scrollsaw artist creates sawdust, chips and creates spaces in wood that delight the eye. A CNC/Laser cutter - a machine creates smoke and charcoal that delight the eye. A big difference.

    3-D cuts

This year was my first attempt at compound cutting. I have used Poplar, Cedar, Maple and Pine so far. I think Poplar is my favorite. I have used a combination of Olsen #7 PGT, Pegasus #5 and 7 skip tooth and Pegasus #5 and 7 mg blades. I think the #5 skip is my favorite. The skip tooth blades cut faster but the mg (reverse tooth) blades cut smoother. Guess you have to decide if you want to spend more time cutting or sanding. I do not use the clear tape. Tried it but it seems to collect saw dust and somewhat obscures the lines for me. I use 3M 77 glue applied to the pattern and that applied directly to the wood. I use (2) 3 inch spring clamps to hold the blanks. I have also used a hand screw/ parallel clamp before someone on here posted the spring clamp trick. I made 30 of the Cedar initial ornaments (Steve Goods Patterns) and several of the other type ornaments from various designers this year. My advice would be as follows: #1 Make sure that your wood is square!!!! I can't stress that enough. I will save you headaches in the end #2make sure that your pattern is folded straight and on the proper line. a good crisp line directly on the corner of the wood is imperative. #3 Take your time!!! Let the blade do it's job. Stop at the end of a cut before making a turn and let the blade catch up and straighten itself. I have attached a picture of a few that I made this year. Good luck and have fun!!!!

  27. Hey Kevin, I use the precut ornaments from Dollar store also. I find the wood cuts nicely and the cost is good. I also buy the small plaques they have for backers. They work really well. I have talked with some of the scrollers on other sites they also use the Dollar store wood. Keep on scrolling my friend.

  28. What blade are you using? Do you have the wood in a clamp? Have you watched Steve Good’s YouTube on the subject?

  29. I finished making a stand out of some wood I had lying around (with the exception of the 4x4 legs) my downstairs shop. I added two drawers on the right side and put the top on hinges so I can have the saw setting flat or at an angle. Painted the wood to match the colors of the Pegas.

    Heart Tray

Steve Good recently issued a pattern for a Heart Tray. I had some Maple and Padauk boards left over from the Heart Box I made back last February (https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/45466-my-version-of-dave-monk%E2%80%99s-%E2%80%98box-for-valentines-day%E2%80%99/#comment-486165). I thought the Tray would make a good companion for the Box I gave my Lady. Was going to give it to her on Christmas but she saw and claimed it already. Laminated the Maple and Padauk making the tray walls 1 1/4” high. Stack cut the outside of laminated tray walls along with the 1/8” thick maple bottom first, then after removing the bottom, cut out the interior sections. Fairly easy cutting with Pegas #5 Skip tooth Blade. Lot of hand sanding creating the red dust everywhere. Attached bottom to walls with Superglue and applied multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. Used the inside dropouts to trace and cut out the red felt bottom liner which I attached with spray adhesive. PITA to fit the sticky liner in its proper place. Comments and Critiques always welcome

    3-D cuts

Hello all, I've been trying my hand at 3-D cuts (ornaments and such) and am wondering what type of wood, blades etc everyone is using. All I have right now is some pine from 2x4's that I trim down to use. I've never tried balsa wood but I can't help but feel that it might work better and cut easier.

Cool! First time I've seen that done. I'm not a hunter anymore but I do need a coat/hat hanger in my shop and I'm pretty sure my father-in-law has some old racks laying around. How did you fasten the antler?

    New website link for fonts

I agree with Frank. There are some fonts that look better with only one bridge and the letters would flow better with just one bridge. If you need a stencil font and use the right font that program will work. I actually enjoy adding bridges as needed to make the letters look the most pleasing I possibly can.

  48. I tested this app on a few different script fonts. It works to some degree but it doesnt take care of loops like often found in letters like "L's" and "k's". In some letters it actually adds more brides than necessary. Great app where it works, but not overly usefull IMHO. I wish some of those talented font designers would develope a series of scrollable script fonts fo us.

  49. If I was close, I'd take it. Clean it up, add the pegas clamps, which means the tension release would be at the front. I'd use it to back up my current saw and it if scrolling something, the takes different blades, switch back and forth between the two saws. Not sure how you change speeds, looks like there is a cover over the belt.. But a lot of people get along just fine with a single speed scroll saw.
