    “Makin Friends”

A Bruce Worthington pattern, 189 pieces which took me a while to complete

  2. I tried scrolling something different than my usual wood art. This one is free-standing (no backing). To be hung on a wall.

  3. I had some left over cherry scraps so I cut and planed them to 1/8" and stack-cut them. A great way to use up scrap! I put this pattern into the pattern section if anyone wants to cut it. Bruce

  5. Had my last sale of the year, I hope, today. It was a blustery day - -15C with windchill felt like -25. Turns out the furnace in the community club wasn't working properly - bloody cold! Only 100 or so came through the sale. Ultimately it really wasn't a bad day in terms of sales. Sale went from 10 - 4 and I did just over $400, which is only about $150 less than the first day of my 2 day event in November. Would I do it again - not sure. I only had an 8' table and wasn't able to set any additional tables up. That meant, all my wall plaques couldn't be displayed. I also think I am giving up on ornaments - only sold 1 this show and 10 last show. Anyhow - here is a picture of the setup.

  6. Sometimes the "shortcut" is to take a break or put the project away until morning. Trying to "get er done" leads to mistakes and redoing a piece that took hours to get cut.

  7. The one thing new scrollers need is patience. It takes time and experience and failures. You just need to keep trying different things. You are going to fail and just accept that. For me, I love making things and the process of making them. I do not think there are short cuts just practice..practice and practice.

  8. Listen to that little voice in your head while scrolling when it says: "Don't do it"

  9. For those in the early stages of scroll sawing there is so much to learn that learning things the hard way can be discouraging. Those of us who have been scrolling for a while have learned some things that may prevent frustration and do-overs for those who are new to scrolling. I'll start with a couple: 1. When working with lumber (as opposed to Baltic birch plywood) inspect the face of your lumber carefully before applying patterns. Imperfections are far easier to correct before you complete your scrolling. Sanding a finished piece is risky. 2. Do not let the blade lift the scrap out of your work piece. Nine times out of ten it will be fine but the blade may grab and twist the scrap causing a delicate detail to break. By the way, Murphy's law dictates that the piece that broke off will ALWAYS find the vacuum with an audible clicking sound as it goes... 3. Those tiny drills we use to drill pilot holes DO NOT like to be rushed. If you are really unlucky the tip will break off inside the work piece. Start the hole and back the drill out to clear the flutes before drilling all the way through.

    Last sale of the year!

Sounds like it was "one of those days". I pray the next will be an "out of the park" event. Your work is superb! Bruce

  11. We did a gift exchange at work for about 20 of us. This was a virtual meeting on computers. The concept was to order from Amazon and keep it under $35. But I am a non-conformist. I said I would make something. The company logo is a Big R, and our brand is a light bulb "iwatt" is the brand. Notice the "iw" as the filiament in the bulb. We design integrated circuits (chips). I obtained some silicon wafers and cut a small circle that fits inside the light bulb. Inliad "yellow heart" into "purple heart". I still need to put a finish on it.

    Small(ish) Puzzle

Sweet. I love spider wort when it's blooming. I need to make more jigsaw puzzles. Carter Johnson (deceased) use to make puzzles from postage stamps. There were 9 pieces on a first class stamp. The whole puzzle fit into a match box.

  15. Okay, I will post one of my dumbest mistakes. I wanted to compose a plaque using Micah 6:8. I messed with it and messed with it until I had a layout that "felt" balanced. Having "accomplished" the balance I printed the design, applied it to some wonderful cherry and cut away. I can't tell you how long this took to cut but rest assured it was a long undertaking. When I removed the pattern and surveyed my work my heart sank. I was so focused on the overall balance I did not notice the additional space between the words love and mercy. Once you see it you cannot "un-see it". I keep this piece handy to remind myself that you have to slow down and see detail at multiple levels. Overall balance is important but so are the small details. I show the final design also to redeem myself.

  16. Been Scrolling over 20 years. This is a Hole reply. I did use to drill all holes first. Now I do not. I find Sectioning off the Pattern and only drill them holes. Like One Pattern and say 4 different little parts. Gives me a break from sitting behind the saw. Anyway this is my 13 cents worth and I am sticking to it. Hehe:+}

  23. Absolutely bad ass! The one that is supposed to be Waylon looks a little more like Johnny Paycheck in my opinion, but still super cool!

  31. Also, why isn't it holding the blades? Can you describe what's going on. I have a delta with the quick clamp, maybe I can help.

Finally finished. Jim Blume pattern on 3/8 willow live edge, ripped in half and bookmarked. Double stack with 1/8 BB ply 1445 cuts with mainly #1 Niqua spiral blade. Measures 18 X 27 inches. Thanks for the "insane" pattern Jim.

  38. Unfortunately, or really fortunately in the category "resources" in the blue line at the top of the forums, there is a drop down titled "how to Articles" that has most the answers and tips. The unfortunate part is new members do not know to look there. Lots of info there for beginners. I wish there was a method to tell the new members.

  39. I haven't bought wheels in a while but bought a bunch when I did. I now have enough that I should never have to make the smaller sizes anymore. I will make larger wheels or custom wheels if needed, since there are not many to make. By the time you consider the time required to make them, you are probably ahead of the game to buy ready made wheels. Tom
