Ray, this is a excellent way to get started. Because of the initial hesitancy to try carving scrolled work, I have suggested to students to start with an old scrolled project that is 1/2" to 3/4" thick and NOT one of your "favorite" works and try carving that. You are half way there!!!! When you see how this improves the overall affect, you will be pleased. To demonstrate this, I will post a simple project (a kitten) and a complicated project (an owl) to examine and see how it brings the animal to life!.4 points

Thank you Dan for commenting on my work which contains mostly scrollwork with subsequent carving, called "Carved Fretwork". Some examples can be seen in the User Gallery of this Forum, on page 1, scroll down to Dick Mira. My new Avatar, a tiger, was just carved from a thick block of Hard Rock Maple, 9" x 7" X 3", that was given to me by a friend. This was very dense wood to carve and certainly not recommended. Most of my projects consist of wildlife subjects that are scrolled, carved, and stained with oils. Regards, Dick Mira4 points

A New Year and a Different Project
scrollingforsanity and one other reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
As I contemplate the new year, I have decided to do something new. I vow to try a Fretwork project. I have never done one and will give it a try but it will be something simple and nothing as difficult as many I see posted. My Hegner is not the best saw for this but will give it a try. I am also going to try some more Intarsia with a lot of shaping and probably some puzzles that have a lot of shaping and background. I am also starting to downsize my shop. I sold my 15" 3hp Jet thickness planer but still have my DeWalt. I will continue to downsize this year. I am getting older and just can not stand too long or scroll too long. Arthritis has become my major enemy. Lastly, I want to improve my dust collection by making better dust pickups. My dust collector has plenty of capacity but know that collecting at the source is key. I encourage others to try a different type project this year and out of your comfort zone.2 points -
I like to see all the various opinions of the meaning of handmade and where the products made from these machines fit in from other woodworkers/crafters opinions etc.. and for the most part I respect their opinions until one says that it's just like printing a photo or basically saying no skill needed.. With the CNC/Laser world there is so much behind the scenes processes left out of the videos.. it seems as many folks really believe it's just printing a picture easy. The sad part is they show that intelligence by displaying these silly signs at their shows saying just that, LOL And the sad thing is many believe those statements and go out and spend big money for a machine only to find they don't have the skill set to actually run it.. a lot of them for sale on the CNC/Laser groups lightly used saying they are harder to run than expected and they are not interested in learning the process.. Guess it's more skill than they thought. IF one wants to emphasize their products as "handmade" why do they feel the need to degrade upon another form of woodwork ( CNC/Laser) to accomplish that? Why not just have the sign state handmade? Why not have a laptop showing a video loop of you doing the work showing handmade?2 points

Woodcarving alongside scrollsawing???
don watson and one other reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
Originally I got hooked on woodcarving and only bought a scroll saw in order to cut out roughouts for carving. Then, the sky fell and I got so hooked on scrolling that I put aside my carving hobby. Now, I have reconnected with carving and so I was wondering if we have any scrollers here on The Village who have managed to combine the two artforms. If so, I'd love to hear and see all of what you have managed to come up with. I've been watching all the Lynn Doughty videos on caricature carving and am anxious to start something but not sure what yet. I did try a basic search here using "woodcarving" as the search word but didn't find anything so I hope this will get some interest.2 points -
That's sorta what I have in mind. Cut out a wall hanger or plaque and the take the knife to it to shape all the edges and give it more of a 3-D effect. I'm thinking about 3-D cutting chess pieces and then refining them with a knife. There are many things if you let your mind wander out of the box.2 points

I've got this great new business plan. Purchase these, wack a bit of paint on them, x the price by 60 and sell them as "Hand Made/painted" At .40c each it's sure to be a winner. Wooden Ornaments2 points

I wouldn't call it mass produced but maybe manufactured. Still a lot of knowledge and setup goes into it. It's cool and has It's place, but not in the craftsman area. Just my opinion of course.1 point -

Welcome to the Village from North Carolina. You'll learn quickly how to select and cut patterns. As Melanie (meflick) said above, Steve Good is a pretty good place to start. His patterns seem to be a little easier. On a scale of 1 to 10, his patterns range from a 4 to 10. The patterns in the Village library are a little more complicated and I would say they range from 6 to 12. Regardless of what pattern you select, remember you are only cutting one hole at a time. It doesn't matter if the pattern has one inside cut or 2000 inside cuts, you can only cut one hole at a time. You'll find the members here are very generous with their knowledge. Don't hesitate to ask questions. Read some of the past topics and remember to post pictures of your projects. We are usually pretty gentle on our critiques and big on praise. Welcome to the addictive hobby of scrolling!1 point -
Hello and welcome to the village from East Tn. Look forward to your participation. As noted, it depends on how the pattern designers creates the pattern. For lots of free patterns, be sure to check out the pattern library here in the village. You will also want to check out Steve Good’s blog. https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/gallery/category/2-pattern-library/ https://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com1 point

welcome to the slide to temptation. Depends on who drew the pattern usually the dark part is left. Sometimes the artist will leave a dark or red line around the part to be left. If you study the pattern you can visualize the parts to be left. They are always anchored to a side . Might say good by to your lathe. After 20 years working one I must admit I like cutting patenrs. Try Alex Fox in Ukraine. His patterns on Etsy are neat but challenging. Darryl1 point

Wood sources

I have a good source for inexpensive hobby wood. Used furniture from Goodwill type stores. Also cigar boxes sold from some smoke shops, they usually sell them when empty inexpensively. Hope this helps someone. Happy New Year !1 point -

Wood sources

One I am thinking of. Habitat for Humanity has lots of hollow doors for sale and cheap prices. The wood pannels on them are not really good for scrolling but for using a backers they may work fine. I hate to read of some one using good BB plywood for backers... makes me cry1 point -

Woodcarving alongside scrollsawing???
scrollingforsanity reacted to DRugerH for a topic
I don't much like wood carving, but it is sometimes necessary. I am currently working on a fishing game for my toddler nephew. It will consist of 6 fish with metal studs in the mouth. The fishing pole will have a rare earth magnet on the "hook" (blood wood part you see) to catch the fish. I am using just some pine and will have it finished by his 3rd birthday in December of 2023, but this is my start. The fish that I have carved are rough, but they will get a thorough sanding and finishing. Dan1 point -

The laser is just a cheap 40watt Co2 laser with only a 8 x 11 work table. It's called a K-40.. cost me about $300 back in 2017.. I think they may be around $450 now days.. Lot of fun to mess with.1 point -

Very nice work. This exactly why I started this topic. I hope more carvers show themselves.1 point -
If you apply a light coat of clear spray sealer, polycrylic or even lacquer prior to painting, you can eliminate paint bleed. Another way is to prime the areas to be painted with a acrylic Gesso. This is easier to do when painting a backer.1 point

Happy to be back in the Village !! Life after Xmas went to 'Hell in a Handbasket' So I've not been able to / not felt like spending much time at my saw nor on my computer. However, things are on the 'up' and decided to cut one of my favourites for a friends birthday. An Alex Fox pattern (one of my favourites) changed to red/grey as I find it easier to cut than the black/white patterns.1 point
