  2. I have cut many patterns of Steve's, more so when I first started out, not as much lately. The Army flag below was for a co-workers son that was in the Army. I am rather proud of the super straight lines that I cut on this piece... I must have been having a good day in the shop when I cut this. LOL

  3. New year - new patterns. I have arleady made many types of patterns (bowls, 3D, fretwork, layered), but I have never made puzzles. So I tried to make some and and here is what came out. What do you think? Do you make puzzles? Puzzle Patterns

  4. 99% of everything I've cut thus far has been Steve Good patterns. Thank you Steve Good!

  5. A couple of windchimes I made back in 2019. The snowman I still have and use every Christmas. The Welcome sign I made for a couple girl friends of mine, we were in a crafting group together. The Anita one is for a friend in New York. My eyesight was a lot better back then.

  6. I have done several of Steve Good's patterns. With some knowledge of inkskape you are able to change them up to make them more challenging as you continue your scroll saw journey. The rose box was a segmented pattern he shared that I thought it would be nice on a box top done in intarsia. The cameo box was a fretwork box that I thought I might try doing it all inlayed.

  7. Steve's catalog was the first I found for available patterns when I started scrolling. This piece was actually the second I ever cut and I gave it to my wife who is a dog mom through and through. She was a dog trainer and trained the police dogs for the agency I worked with. I was the firearms instructor and she came to the range wanting lessons. That was how we met. Anyway, the "Dogs Welcome" sign hangs on our front door to this day.

  8. I cut many Steve Good patterns, it is a great place to get different patterns when you start with the scrollsaw. I just post a few pics of some of his designs

Another piece done this year! Don't remember the wood. Cut with #3 FD full reverse. Finished with the beeswax/mineral oil "butter".

  10. We all know Steve Good from Scroll Saw Workshop. He's arguably the most prolific, and most well known pattern designers in the scrolling community. He's turned out so many great patterns on a nearly daily basis. His free pattern library will keep an average scroller busy for years! Plus, he's very generous when sharing his knowledge and advice. I think it's safe to say that most scrollers that have been around for a short bit have cut one or more of his patterns. So I think this month's scroll saw challenge is to post a project you cut with a Steve Good pattern. When you do, post a little backstory about your project. Why did you choose that design? Who did you make it for? It'll be fun to see what you come up with! Are you looking for a project? Browse his free Pattern Catalog here: https://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/index.php

    2023 Whale breathing

I've been under the surface too long like a whale I came up to breathe again so I made a big whale hoping that 2023 will be a year of new beginnings like a whale breathing with fresh air. I hope everyone was healthy and doing well while I'm under the surface. happy new year !!

  12. Steve's Scroll saw Workshop was the first place I came across when I became interested in scrolling as a hobby. I have made quite a few of Steve's patterns and as Jim McDonald says above have learned much from him. These 2 patterns were my first attempts at using more than 1 layer of wood and although I still have much to learn, I was quite happy with the results.

  13. 30 years later, and if I visit the kids, the ex rolls down the street to see if my current wife is along. She still stirs up crap whenever she can. When my parent's 70th anniversary came round, the ex intercepted the invitation to my son and showed up. in 2019, Current wife and I rented a large beach house and invited all the kids (hers, mine and ours), spouses and grandkids. She had the nerve to try to come along with my son's family. I have tried so hard to be civil. The manure will continue until death of one of us. I got along with my current wife's ex. Not as friends, we had little in common, but we could talk in a friendly manner and agree about things for my stepson. When he was dying of cancer, I drove my stepson, 100 miles twice a week so he could spend time with his father. two days before he died he thanked me and added that he was grateful that a man would still be watching out for his son after he is gone.

  14. I decide to try making a wooden gear clock once and want to have good accurate brad point bits. So I listed the sizes I needed for the project and bought those sizes from Lee Valley. They were and are good ones.. I add to the group as I need a size I do not yet have. Does not sting as bad to buy a few at a time.

He has been a great supporter of this hobby and I appreciate all that he HAS done and will do for us. Here are a couple of recent cuts from older, timeless postings:

  20. Thanks for the thoughts friends. I have Amazon Prime and found that particular diamond stone set for a couple dollars less and free shipping to me so that's likely the route I'll be going. Perfect winter project to sharpen my Forstner bits, right along with sharpening all my twist bits with my old Drill Doctor gizmo. Already organized my bits again and wrote down what replacement sizes I need. Sure will be happy when warm weather gets here. Sub-zero temps one week ago, bursting water mains and pipes, frost bitten livestock from 30-below-zero wind chill temperatures but mid 60's today, pushing 70 tomorrow. Welcome to Kentucky here in the mid-south USA. Thunder storming right now. Hoping no tornados this season like the tragedy across town 12 1/2 months ago. Also keeping busy planning projects on Beloved Wife's and my new little Wen scroll saw, while I heal from the rotator cuff surgery. And hoping for a price drop sale on the Jet 18 inch scroll saw this season. Haven't been this excited about my wood crafting plans since my lathe turned sculptural period from 1995 to 2005. Sure appreciate everyone here being so encouraging and kindly helpful. Truly. All my very best to each and every one of you folks. Don

    NOOB Here

Mornin!!! As others have said, there's no set, hard-and-fast rule regarding what to cut out, dark or light. I've put together patterns and don't use just one or the other, it kinda depends on the picture. Most pattern designers will put on the pattern "remove black" or "remove white", or put a red border around what needs to be cut (with a small enough pilot hole, just follow the line and you can't go wrong). When I'm looking at a pattern that I like, I'll find an "island", a spot of one color that's not connected to anything around it. For most patterns, unless you're doing segmentation, the islands are going to be the color you want to remove. "Peninsulas" are just like the geographic feature, they're usually sections of the pattern that were floating, but integral to the pattern, so they're connected back to the rest of the main pattern by a thin "bridge". Here's an example of islands, and what I look for in a pattern to determine what to remove:

    Busy Holidays

I spent a bit of time cleaning up my scraps. Threw some wood out!!! Created a new storage area. Used a shoe rack for putting the bins on. Looking at it, I think I should clean out a bit more!! Hubby might be right (Don't tell him that). Some of my scraps are quite small.

Glad you were not ill. In America we have a saying of feeling "under the weather" which means you haven't been feeling well... Some of us probably thought South Koreans said under the sea, instead. I good thing is you are not nor have been ill.

  46. Agree about the sad world of today, I had lawn darts as a kid and I'm still alive. Today, the kids would probably stab each other with them. Anyway, the ornaments... My suggestion: Disclaimer in the packaging. Many of my products have small pieces, and not meant for infants or toddlers. But each item I package comes with a full disclaimer about the size of parts. When adults by my products for children, the first question I ask is "Are they beyond the putting in the mouth age?". This helps to direct them to more appropriate products. Not having any children myself, I always find it fascinating how EVERY child is "smart for their age", "very good with puzzles", "very talented'". If that is so true, why do we have so many problems with children these days LOL - oh well. Disclaimer everything!

  47. This is the 3rd year my wife and I have made gifts for our kids. The first one for my son is Halo by Derek Hugger. Its a spring loaded marble machine. If you look him up on youtube, you will see how it is suppose to operate. Unfortunately I still need to work on it as it binds up and does not run as smoothly as I'd like. I tried to use walnut and oak where I could, but it often wasn't strong enough and I had to use plywood. The 2nd is a kids bakery counter for my daughter. My wife did the detail work and painting. 1/2 inch ply, and 1/8 inch plexiglass. No plans for this one just a rough cutlist we made. Thanks again everyone for a wonderful year, my family really enjoys the photos you post of your amazing works of art.
