I don’t remember who did this here on SSV awhile ago. I found it again and did the pattern from a picture. The initials are both my wife and I. I used some bass wood my brother gave me. It’s really soft wood and doesn’t take much of the finish. I used 321. BLO semi gloss poly and mineral spirits. Thanks for looking.

This one took me awhile. 1/2" thick Red Oak on 1/4" BB backer. Rather then using "rails" like the plans, I when with a full sized backer board. Cut with #3 Pegas MGT blades. I usually get my R.O. from the local big box store (Menards), but I have not been pleased with the quality lately. Uneven coloring and excessive warping, etc. Problems I never have when I buy from Ocooch Hardwoods so I will be ordering a lot more from them this year.

  5. Made a frame from pine, burnt it with a blow torch and then brushed it with a wire brush until I achieved the desired effect. Then applied sanding sealer and a clear coat of Matt varnish.

  6. I’ve mentioned before that we have many cube type tissue boxes scattered around our house. Allergy reactions – sniffles, watering eyes, etc. - to everything Florida offers makes handy access to tissues a necessity. These two make a total of seven and I really need to make yet one more for my workshop. The covers are made like the previous, mainly using 5/32” solid core Maple Plywood cut offs, from my previous portrait projects, that I found in my scrap wood bin. All corners are simple miters done on the Table Saw. Of course, I did have to develop two new patterns for these covers that were cut using Pegas #2/0 spiral blades. The pattern for one cover is ‘Cranes and Palm Trees’ while the other is a simple ‘Sunflower’. The interior backers were hand painted with Artist Acrylic paints and, like before, the covers were protected with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Deft Lacquer. I’ll post the pdf’s for the patterns in the New Patters Announcements.

  7. For Christmas, my wife got me a very nice office drafting chair. I am attaching a picture of my old Craftsman chair and the new one. I have a very bad back and this new chair is great for scrolling with much better back support.

  8. Patrick Maxwell Renna as Hamilton "Ham" Porter from the movie, "The Sandlot." I was more of a Smalls, "made straight A's and sh*t" but thought too much to be good at sports. So great when the "Benny the Jets" encourage the "Smalls" of the world. I had one or two in my life. Sorry if you don't recognize the references. Love this movie!

    2023 Whale breathing

I've been under the surface too long like a whale I came up to breathe again so I made a big whale hoping that 2023 will be a year of new beginnings like a whale breathing with fresh air. I hope everyone was healthy and doing well while I'm under the surface. happy new year !!

  11. I don't post a lot because I am so busy cutting but here is some I have cut. I worked at a daycare several years back and made each of the babies one of these . The parents thought it was really cool and the upper management wrote me a letter thanking me for being so thoughtful . I do this hobby because I like to see peoples faces when I give them a gift. I now work on an Air force base so the veteran plaques are a big thing to do . It is a modified Steve Good pattern.. Thank you Steve for all you do for the scrolling community.

  13. I am trying to learn to make some nicer things other than on the scroll saw. My Brother Barry is a fine box maker, so I tried to make a nice box. I have been getting some nicer tools and trying to make things the right way instead of just throwing them together. This box is made of Alder which as you can see I used finger joints. The box top is made of oak and walnut. The dowels I used to attach the top are walnut.

    Humming Bird

I was so excited when Alex posted his new pattern yesterday. It came at the perfect time. I was just finishing lunch and looking for something to do. I saw the plan, purchased it and "got it done". This is also cut from reclaimed Elm. We have a lumber place here now that takes trees that the city has cut, and mill them. Most of the stuff is kept as live edge. This piece was cut from one of their "shorts" at $5/bf. Enough rambling. Cut from Elm using a #5 mg blade. I cut the outline with a #5 FD ultra reverse, but it was so slow and burned in a couple of places. The MG left an amazingly smooth surface that I only sanded the nibs where the blade came out. The flower/leaves have a watered down thin coat of Unicorn Spit. The border is Old Masters gel stain - red mahogany. The hummingbird was finished with Old Masters - fruitwood, the flower/leaves were coated with Tung Oil. Thanks @alexfox for another wonderful pattern.

Very well done! Beautiful overall. If you are not going to use a backer, I could visualize seeing the cutouts filled with a colored epoxy/resin like others have used and previously shown herein.

  20. I bought blades regurlarly from Lesley Patterns with no problems. Several weeks ago i heard about the issues reported in this post. I googled their site to find that there were no hits. I assumed that they must have gone out of business. Today I googled again to find their web site back on line. One minor difference that I noted was the missing crucifix that they used to feature on the home page. This could suggest a change of ownership or operators of the site. I plan to follow up with a phone call to them.

  25. Hi, @Don Bedggood As preprius said, I also wondered about the amount of wood burning and the results. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so, as long as you are pleased, that is what matters, I am not particularly fond of the dark nature of the frame. Just my opinion which has lost a lot of value due to the cost of living inflation. God Bless! Spirithorse

  29. I always match the clamp to the blade size, as you listed. However it is my experience that I break more blades (usually Pegas mg) with my Hegner than my Excalibur. The clamps are fantastic, but many breaks occur at the jaw of the clamp. I usually eject the 1/8 inch piece in the jaw and reclamp and retension the remaining blade. I also loosen the top screw about a quarter turn to allow the blade assembly more freedom of movement, but breaks still can occur.

  30. Nothing can ruin a day quicker than a back problem. I have a bad back but nothing that can be fixed. I have one leg 3/8" shorter than the other. I've tried lifts and all the other things that have been suggested but after 80 years of being crooked, it just gets sore quickly. I realize that there is more "crooked" about me than my back. LOL.

    Humming Bird

3/4" is recommended thickness. Unfortunately I dont have an opportunity to cut and test it by myself, but I looked throught some forums and find out that scrollers use 1/2"-1" inch thickness, depends on project size. Recommended hummingbird size about 8x9", also I think it is more stable if you want for the project to stand, but if you want just assembling puzzles you can use thiner wood

Very well done Barb, did you go with 3/4” thickness as Alex recommended. Myself I think it will be too thick?????

So sugi ban will yield some interesting , sometimes unexpectedly dramatic results. I like to use it on heavily grained lumber like fir. Wire bush it, then dye it, usually blue, red or, green.

  40. Steve's Scroll saw Workshop was the first place I came across when I became interested in scrolling as a hobby. I have made quite a few of Steve's patterns and as Jim McDonald says above have learned much from him. These 2 patterns were my first attempts at using more than 1 layer of wood and although I still have much to learn, I was quite happy with the results.

Jeaheon, I’m glad you surfaced to get a breath or two. Good to see you visit us here in the village. It is always wonderful to see what your newest puzzle creation is. This whale looks great. Blessings to you for the New Year and hope you get more opportunities to stay above the surface.
