I’ve mentioned before that we have many cube type tissue boxes scattered around our house. Allergy reactions – sniffles, watering eyes, etc. - to everything Florida offers makes handy access to tissues a necessity. These two make a total of seven and I really need to make yet one more for my workshop. The covers are made like the previous, mainly using 5/32” solid core Maple Plywood cut offs, from my previous portrait projects, that I found in my scrap wood bin. All corners are simple miters done on the Table Saw. Of course, I did have to develop two new patterns for these covers that were cut using Pegas #2/0 spiral blades. The pattern for one cover is ‘Cranes and Palm Trees’ while the other is a simple ‘Sunflower’. The interior backers were hand painted with Artist Acrylic paints and, like before, the covers were protected with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Deft Lacquer. I’ll post the pdf’s for the patterns in the New Patters Announcements.13 points

This one took me awhile. 1/2" thick Red Oak on 1/4" BB backer. Rather then using "rails" like the plans, I when with a full sized backer board. Cut with #3 Pegas MGT blades. I usually get my R.O. from the local big box store (Menards), but I have not been pleased with the quality lately. Uneven coloring and excessive warping, etc. Problems I never have when I buy from Ocooch Hardwoods so I will be ordering a lot more from them this year.7 points

Alex Fox Basket C03
Matt B and 4 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
A finished Alex Fox basket pattern C03 enlarged 30%. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood 10" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1 MGT blades. After sanding with a Mac Mop, I glued each ring and waited for the glue to dry, so the glue up took time. The finish is spray Lacquer Clear Gloss. Comments welcome.5 points -

I don’t remember who did this here on SSV awhile ago. I found it again and did the pattern from a picture. The initials are both my wife and I. I used some bass wood my brother gave me. It’s really soft wood and doesn’t take much of the finish. I used 321. BLO semi gloss poly and mineral spirits. Thanks for looking.4 points -
Patrick Maxwell Renna as Hamilton "Ham" Porter from the movie, "The Sandlot." I was more of a Smalls, "made straight A's and sh*t" but thought too much to be good at sports. So great when the "Benny the Jets" encourage the "Smalls" of the world. I had one or two in my life. Sorry if you don't recognize the references. Love this movie!4 points

We all know Steve Good from Scroll Saw Workshop. He's arguably the most prolific, and most well known pattern designers in the scrolling community. He's turned out so many great patterns on a nearly daily basis. His free pattern library will keep an average scroller busy for years! Plus, he's very generous when sharing his knowledge and advice. I think it's safe to say that most scrollers that have been around for a short bit have cut one or more of his patterns. So I think this month's scroll saw challenge is to post a project you cut with a Steve Good pattern. When you do, post a little backstory about your project. Why did you choose that design? Who did you make it for? It'll be fun to see what you come up with! Are you looking for a project? Browse his free Pattern Catalog here: https://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/index.php2 points

I am trying to learn to make some nicer things other than on the scroll saw. My Brother Barry is a fine box maker, so I tried to make a nice box. I have been getting some nicer tools and trying to make things the right way instead of just throwing them together. This box is made of Alder which as you can see I used finger joints. The box top is made of oak and walnut. The dowels I used to attach the top are walnut.2 points

Humming Bird

I was so excited when Alex posted his new pattern yesterday. It came at the perfect time. I was just finishing lunch and looking for something to do. I saw the plan, purchased it and "got it done". This is also cut from reclaimed Elm. We have a lumber place here now that takes trees that the city has cut, and mill them. Most of the stuff is kept as live edge. This piece was cut from one of their "shorts" at $5/bf. Enough rambling. Cut from Elm using a #5 mg blade. I cut the outline with a #5 FD ultra reverse, but it was so slow and burned in a couple of places. The MG left an amazingly smooth surface that I only sanded the nibs where the blade came out. The flower/leaves have a watered down thin coat of Unicorn Spit. The border is Old Masters gel stain - red mahogany. The hummingbird was finished with Old Masters - fruitwood, the flower/leaves were coated with Tung Oil. Thanks @alexfox for another wonderful pattern.2 points -

I buy all my blades from Denny Knappen the prices are good and the service is great, besides that due to my last order I got an extra dozen blades, I got them in 3 days.Good show Denny Bill2 points -
I don't post a lot because I am so busy cutting but here is some I have cut. I worked at a daycare several years back and made each of the babies one of these . The parents thought it was really cool and the upper management wrote me a letter thanking me for being so thoughtful . I do this hobby because I like to see peoples faces when I give them a gift. I now work on an Air force base so the veteran plaques are a big thing to do . It is a modified Steve Good pattern.. Thank you Steve for all you do for the scrolling community.2 points

I cut a lot of Steve's patterns and can truthfully say that I have learned volumes from reading his posts, watching his YouTube and cutting his patterns. He has been a great supporter of this hobby and I appreciate all that he HAS done and will do for us. Here are a couple of recent cuts from older, timeless postings:2 points -

I have done several of Steve Good's patterns. With some knowledge of inkskape you are able to change them up to make them more challenging as you continue your scroll saw journey. The rose box was a segmented pattern he shared that I thought it would be nice on a box top done in intarsia. The cameo box was a fretwork box that I thought I might try doing it all inlayed.2 points

Steve's catalog was the first I found for available patterns when I started scrolling. This piece was actually the second I ever cut and I gave it to my wife who is a dog mom through and through. She was a dog trainer and trained the police dogs for the agency I worked with. I was the firearms instructor and she came to the range wanting lessons. That was how we met. Anyway, the "Dogs Welcome" sign hangs on our front door to this day.2 points

From everything I read, Chadwick was a great guy. Such a shame he died so young. “Sometimes you need to feel the pain and sting of defeat to activate the real passion and purpose that God predestined inside of you.” - Chadwick Boseman Interestingly, "Yibambe", the Wakandan battle cry, means hold fast.1 point

Restoration
Tbow388 reacted to Ron Johnson for a topic
This old toy car is 7 ½” L x 3 ½” W x 3”H. Sister in law acquired this from a yard sale for.60 cents. It was in pieces, with only two wheels, broken bumpers with headlights and taillights needing replacing. It was in sad shape so I decided to try and restore this beauty. Lightly sanded the original finish and applied a natural oil finish. Not sure of the wood spieces. Made new bumpers of Aspen, headlights taillights of Ebony along with new wheels. Really enjoyed doing the restoration.1 point -

Steve Good - Scroll Saw Challenge

Steve's Scroll saw Workshop was the first place I came across when I became interested in scrolling as a hobby. I have made quite a few of Steve's patterns and as Jim McDonald says above have learned much from him. These 2 patterns were my first attempts at using more than 1 layer of wood and although I still have much to learn, I was quite happy with the results.1 point -
That would be me. Although, I occasionally see one I like.1 point
