    Chess sets.

I crafted table using Peruvian walnut, Zebra wood, and Maple. The drawer on the table slides through so each player can access it. Chess pieces are made of Aspen and Peruvian walnut. The first design of pieces are super fragile and will break super easy.

    Tree, borrowed from Fish

Thanks @Fish for letting me "borrow" your idea. I used a piece of wormy red oak. A scroll saw can double as a time machine. This one took me back about 40 years. A good year for me.

When I bought my Hawk I almost went with a 20” saw instead of the 26”. I have only had a couple projects in the 17 years of scroll sawing that a 20” saw was too small. This project won’t fit on my 21” Excalibur but thankfully there is plenty of room left on the Hawk. This project is just shy if 2’ long.

    Just So You Know

I have been making some things. I just finished this Marine Emblem. This is the 6th one I have made. Everytime I make one I end up giving it to a Marine I meet. Then I have to make myself another one. The last one I gave to a Marine, it was my Dental Hygienist. She was pretty excited.. So here it the last one. I am now starting a Navy one for a retired Navy friend. He spent 35 years in the Navy.. He deserves one.

    Butterfly Trio

The Butterfly patterns were converted from various free images I found on-line. The Butterflies were cut from 5/32” solid core Birch and are approximately 10” x 7.5” which I primed and then painted with rattle can Krylon Gloss Black. The Backer is 1/4” x 12” x 24” BB Ply that was hand painted with Acrylic Artist paints. I used photos of real Butterflies to get an idea of the colors. The assembled panel was protected with Minwax Clear Gloss Polycrylic. From top to bottom they are: Monarch, Papillio Ulysses, and Papillio Machaon. Lots of other images were available but the wing patterns of most were just too intricate to convert to a Cuttable Scroll Saw Pattern. The frame is 1 3/4” wide premium Pine that was primed and painted Glidden Gloss Black. Comments and critiques always welcome.

  8. I had several "alignment" issues when I first got my Pegas 21. I called Michael Murray - 1 (732) 904-2174 who is a Pegas Tech in NY (??). He walked me through the processes and viola I can cut at 45 or bit more each side (if i remove dust collection). He's a good tech and knows his stuff. Give him a shot... Scott McCaul

  9. My Brother that moved to Mississippi from Denver 4 months ago decided it was finally time to get a job. My Brother has always been some sort of Iron Worker. He spent the last MANY MANY years being a CWI (Certified Welding Inspector). He decided to slow things down a bit and get a job that he would enjoy more. He got a job at a Cabinet Shop that I get a lot of scrap wood from. I decided to make him a HandyMans toolbox to carry his special tools in (He has a bunch). I hope he enjoys it.

  12. Thanks so much Bill. I love Festus! I've never seen him in any movies but I have seen videos of him singing and after hearing his Festus voice all those years it's amazing. I cut this pattern by @wild bill a few years ago. I thought he did a great job capturing him. I just added some wrinkles to his forehead.

  13. Straight outta google: The following wood burning appliances are allowed: Pellet-fueled wood burning heaters. Masonry heaters. Appliance or fireplace determined to meet the U.S. EPA particulate matter emission standard and approved in writing by the Air Pollution Control Officer. EDIT: Well reading further down the list of topic on google maybe not.. just depends on where you are as not all areas can but there are some exemptions that some folks can too so there is that too. LOL

  14. I don't think any woodburning stove is legal here. I'll have check. If they turn off our gas I may have to burn my precious scraps.

  15. Breathing in California is probably illegal too, .. Actually a lot of insurance companies won't allow wood stoves in garages etc. This is a wood pellet stove which is allowed as they are considered a lot safer than a actual wood stove as it has sensors that shut it down if it gets too hot etc. has blowers to blow the heat around and the only part that really gets too hot to touch is the actual door and the glass in the door.. and even those don't get so hot that you can touch it but you won't want to leave you hand on it very long, LOL.. unlike the woodburner I grew up around.. if you even slightly touch that it'd give you serious burns. My laser cutter is more dangerous than this stove, LOL..

I don’t remember who did this here on SSV awhile ago. I found it again and did the pattern from a picture. The initials are both my wife and I. I used some bass wood my brother gave me. It’s really soft wood and doesn’t take much of the finish. I used 321. BLO semi gloss poly and mineral spirits. Thanks for looking.

    Sectional Bible verse

This one took me awhile. 1/2" thick Red Oak on 1/4" BB backer. Rather then using "rails" like the plans, I when with a full sized backer board. Cut with #3 Pegas MGT blades. I usually get my R.O. from the local big box store (Menards), but I have not been pleased with the quality lately. Uneven coloring and excessive warping, etc. Problems I never have when I buy from Ocooch Hardwoods so I will be ordering a lot more from them this year.

  20. I’ve mentioned before that we have many cube type tissue boxes scattered around our house. Allergy reactions – sniffles, watering eyes, etc. - to everything Florida offers makes handy access to tissues a necessity. These two make a total of seven and I really need to make yet one more for my workshop. The covers are made like the previous, mainly using 5/32” solid core Maple Plywood cut offs, from my previous portrait projects, that I found in my scrap wood bin. All corners are simple miters done on the Table Saw. Of course, I did have to develop two new patterns for these covers that were cut using Pegas #2/0 spiral blades. The pattern for one cover is ‘Cranes and Palm Trees’ while the other is a simple ‘Sunflower’. The interior backers were hand painted with Artist Acrylic paints and, like before, the covers were protected with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Deft Lacquer. I’ll post the pdf’s for the patterns in the New Patters Announcements.

  22. Thanks Scott @Scott M.. I will call him. I talked with Michael Murray today and he was most helpful. Per his suggestion, I loosened the 4 hex screws which hold the tabletop in place and shifted the tabletop to where the blade fit in the slot when the head is tilted. That did the trick with one minor issue. When the head is tilted beyond 36°, the blade guard (the one under the tabletop) hits the underside of the tabletop and makes a lot of noise. Michael suggested removing the lower blade guard as it serves little purpose. it is not very often that any of us put ourselves at risk of cutting our fingers on the blade under the tabletop while running the scrollsaw. Kudos to Michael and Pegas for good technical support!

  26. I get this oak dirt cheap at a local consignment shop, like $5 for a 1 X 8 X 8' but it's wormy and not kiln dried so sometimes it warps when I start cutting it. Still get some great pieces sometimes. I cut a small piece and put in in our oven warming drawer for a couple of hours at 160 degrees to kill any living critters in it and dry it out a bit.

  28. It really is a nice yard. And the young guy who runs their online store, Chris, is so nice to work with. If I ask him for a special thickness that they don't usually offer, he adds it to the list for the planer shop when they have time. They don't offer anything in 3/8" but one of my patterns calls for 3/8" walnut. So, I ordered a 6 ft x 12" piece from them. Now I have plenty for a long while. Great people to deal with and their prices are so reasonable. They have a special section for scroll saw wood. Cherokeewood.com.

  36. Whenever I take a drive out to Cherokee Wood Products, I always come away with a couple of boxes with cutoffs that they would otherwise put through the shredder. I've got some very nice "scraps" of purple heart and other woods that I can't identify. Great place to buy from.

As a Vietnam vet I am so moved by the attention and expressions of gratefulness afforded to vets today. When this new trend began, I was moved to tears when I first encountered a sales clerk who thanked me for my service. During the war, I was stationed in San Diego. Every day we drove past war protestors at the main gate to the Naval Air Station with "baby killer" signs and other insulting language I won't repeat. When we returned to the States from our Vietnam deployment we were told we should not wear our uniforms or any other clothing that might identify us as active duty military. Thank you for your efforts to acknowledge and honor those who serve. It is a healing salve for all vets.

  41. I have cut a fair few of Steve's patterns, like everyone else but this is one that always puts a smile on my face. I modified it so that I could give it to my dentist. I colored parts orange because he was in the orange room but by the time I got to give them to him he had moved into the green room. Marg

  44. I bought 1 1/2 year old Laguna lathe that has been giving me trouble for the last month. When I first called them they were great. The parts they sent me didn’t fix it. After not hearing back from them for a week I emailed again. They were going to send another part last Thursday. Still haven’t got it or heard from them again. It’s a great lathe it’s their customer service that is hit and miss.

    Wood finger rings

I made rings for my daughter and wife several years ago.. I made a inlay peace sign pendant for my daughter back a few years ago when the symbol made another "in style" comeback for a couple short lived years, LOL The rings I made was actually a template from Steve Good I think.. He has patterns for estimated ring sizes etc.. I did a glue up of walnut and maple.. then basically just cut it out and did all the shaping by sanding it. Quite a lot of work this way but the rings came out awesome.. I used clear Lacquer for the finish.. held up pretty good but after a couple years there is some wear showing on the finish. Could always just top coat again I suppose. Used to be a guy I followed on instagram that made rings and sold them on etsy.. his method was to cut strips of thin laminate material and super glue. he had different size dowels for doing his glue ups.. He would apply some glue and roll the laminate up and just kept gluing / rolling.. then sand and shape it.. His finish was actually the CA glue ( super glue ).. He made some beautiful rings.. weren't cheap either at a couple hundred each. He's probably still on instagram and etsy.. I just don't get on and follow the people like I once did.. He had quite a few sales and seemed to do really well with it.

  48. Dave, I have the same Drum sander although it was made by SuperMax before Laguna bought the company. It is one of my favorite tools. I just looked, and at least on the 19-38 they do not have the 120v plug like you mentioned. When the company was SuperMax, they had excellent service. I have heard negative things about Laguna’s service.

    Baltic Birch

I don’t want this to turn into a political post. I purchased a few sheets of Baltic Birch last week. This is from a lumber supplier in Dallas Tx. While there, I asked where Baltic Birch came from. I should have known that it came from Russia. They told me that when out of their present stock that they will not buy more from Russia but that they will get Vietnam birch instead. They said the quality of Vietnam birch is similar but that it does have some voids. Their business is cabinet makers where voids do not matter but it will for us I am sure that in the near future we will find our hobby wood in short supply
