Just So You Know
new2woodwrk reacted to Scrappile for a topic
I have been making some things. I just finished this Marine Emblem. This is the 6th one I have made. Everytime I make one I end up giving it to a Marine I meet. Then I have to make myself another one. The last one I gave to a Marine, it was my Dental Hygienist. She was pretty excited.. So here it the last one. I am now starting a Navy one for a retired Navy friend. He spent 35 years in the Navy.. He deserves one.1 point -

*sigh* The customer is always right!?
Rolf reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
We do our best to talk customers out of coloring our products simply because what they envision and what the wood will take are often 2 different things. Water items, no problem since we do lots of them. Green pasture, no problem we do lots of them. However once in awhile we get an "unshakeable" customer and no matter what we say, they are adamant in their color scheme... This then is one of those customers. The "Matt Pan" shadow with Bronze hooks - all black except for the feather! It took 2 different stains to get the "purest" black we could... Thanks in advance for looking..1 point -

This one took me awhile. 1/2" thick Red Oak on 1/4" BB backer. Rather then using "rails" like the plans, I when with a full sized backer board. Cut with #3 Pegas MGT blades. I usually get my R.O. from the local big box store (Menards), but I have not been pleased with the quality lately. Uneven coloring and excessive warping, etc. Problems I never have when I buy from Ocooch Hardwoods so I will be ordering a lot more from them this year.1 point

Way more patience than I have. I keep it under 300 holes.1 point

That is as good as his. The wormy red oak really did it for that pattern.1 point

Steve Good just did a review on the latest iteration of the "Scrollnado" dust collection system. He discussed a little vacuum that work really well with that system. Sorry. I don't remember the brand name. But a YouTube search would find the review.1 point -
Stack cutting a portrait
OCtoolguy reacted to William Eicehelberger for a topic
On any project that I will use 2 or more copies I cut 3 I make my own frames so the size doesn't matter. My backers is usually some scrap ply found in the dumpster With the price of balletic birch I don't make many prostrates or pictures The ;main thing is that the blade is square with the table Bill1 point -

Great work. The combination of the saw and laser is inspired. What type of laser do you have?1 point

Everything I cut is stack cut using 1/4-inch ply. I only stack cut 2 pieces. I've found stacking 3 poses a bit of a problem with the deviation of the blade when pressing through a cut. If you do stack cut three, you have to slow your cuts and let the blade "catch up" especially on sharper turns. The largest I've stack cut is 14X21 and I didn't have any problems, even on my 16-inch saw. I typically use spiral blades and tend to use a smaller blade than typical. (between 2/0 and 1) Like Clayton said, if you used 1/8 ply, you could probably get away with triple stack without any problems. Good luck.1 point

From everything I read, Chadwick was a great guy. Such a shame he died so young. “Sometimes you need to feel the pain and sting of defeat to activate the real passion and purpose that God predestined inside of you.” - Chadwick Boseman Interestingly, "Yibambe", the Wakandan battle cry, means hold fast.1 point

I have cut a fair few of Steve's patterns, like everyone else but this is one that always puts a smile on my face. I modified it so that I could give it to my dentist. I colored parts orange because he was in the orange room but by the time I got to give them to him he had moved into the green room. Marg1 point -

Restoration
Tbow388 reacted to Ron Johnson for a topic
This old toy car is 7 ½” L x 3 ½” W x 3”H. Sister in law acquired this from a yard sale for.60 cents. It was in pieces, with only two wheels, broken bumpers with headlights and taillights needing replacing. It was in sad shape so I decided to try and restore this beauty. Lightly sanded the original finish and applied a natural oil finish. Not sure of the wood spieces. Made new bumpers of Aspen, headlights taillights of Ebony along with new wheels. Really enjoyed doing the restoration.1 point -
I don't post a lot because I am so busy cutting but here is some I have cut. I worked at a daycare several years back and made each of the babies one of these . The parents thought it was really cool and the upper management wrote me a letter thanking me for being so thoughtful . I do this hobby because I like to see peoples faces when I give them a gift. I now work on an Air force base so the veteran plaques are a big thing to do . It is a modified Steve Good pattern.. Thank you Steve for all you do for the scrolling community.1 point

Just a plug for Steve.. I try to donate to him about what I would have to spend on a subscription to a scroll magazine, each year. I really think I get more from him than I do from the magazines. It's not Not much money, I agree, but I get more from him than any Scroll Saw magazine I have ever subscribed to...1 point

I cut a lot of Steve's patterns and can truthfully say that I have learned volumes from reading his posts, watching his YouTube and cutting his patterns. He has been a great supporter of this hobby and I appreciate all that he HAS done and will do for us. Here are a couple of recent cuts from older, timeless postings:1 point -

I have done several of Steve Good's patterns. With some knowledge of inkskape you are able to change them up to make them more challenging as you continue your scroll saw journey. The rose box was a segmented pattern he shared that I thought it would be nice on a box top done in intarsia. The cameo box was a fretwork box that I thought I might try doing it all inlayed.1 point

I have been sanding the wood to 220 before applying the pattern. Makes final finishing easier. Be patient. It is not a race. Don't be overly critical - only you see the "flaws". No one else does.1 point -
