    tree with a twist

Hi everyone, just finished this tree that Fish was kind enough to put in the pattern library for us. Thanks Fish. I did it a little different. I burnt the heart and initials in instead of cutting them. Thought it might look a little more realistic. There was a lot of blade changes in this pattern. I have a couple more to do.This one is for my granddaughter.

  5. Hey Everyone! In my first scroll saw project video of 2023, I cut out this beautiful Knights Shield! Over Christmas break I watched a ton of Documentaries on Kings & Queens and Castles and it totally fascinated me and I wanted to make a project to reflect it. This Steve Good design uses 1/4 inch material. Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate

    The Tomb

Spent a couple hours this morning designing my version of "The Tomb", with the 3 crosses of Calvary, made from 3/4" standard pine, just free-handed the pieces on some thin boards for templates, then traced the templates to the pines boards, then cut each piece out, then took each piece to the spindle sander and contoured the edge of each piece to give a carved look, stained red mahogany and early American, glued all 4 layers together to make it 3" thick and stand very solid.......comments always welcomed. This was a gift for my mom for Easter this year.

  7. New wolf pattern, I plan to make several such patterns (silhuette of animal with scene inside). I made two variants: silhuette and framed, as an example added colored variant. Which one do you like more? And one more question: If you need black color how do you get it? Paint, stain or something else? Pattern at https://www.etsy.com/shop/AlexFoxUA

    I made a mistake

The motor in the MetroVac and in whole home vacs are brushed motors; that is they have small carbon blocks that ride a commutator to switch the magnetic field and make the motor spin. Turning a motor on and off often doesn't really hurt the motor itself as its just a lot of wire wound in loops. However, those brushes... If the commutator isn't perfect smooth or their springs are weak they will bounce a bit and they will arc causing accelerated wear. The inrush current at startup could cause additional wear too. Fortunately they are replaceable and not very expensive.

  16. Another nice piece, Tbow. Great choice with the "Old" oak. I'm sure cutting 7/8 of that old oak was a bit of a chore.

    Dark Theme Mode?

I went ahead and created a dark theme for you. If you go to the bottom of the screen, click Theme and choose Dark. Anybody can use this theme. I just have to make sure all of the settings are the same between the two themes. I think I got them, but I guess time will tell. Let me know if something isn't behaving the way it should.

    Dust Pump

I use s dust mask at times but prefer to try to collect at source.a BB d use an air filter. For me, the issue is also that the dust get on the clothes and so when I take the mask off, I breath the dust from my clothes. It comes down to how much dust you can tolerate.

Fighting "micro dust" has spawned an entire industry. You can buy air purifiers starting in the $100's and proceeding into the $1000's. I concluded to use an N-95 face mask and let the rest fall where it may. Bruce

  21. Tallbald, when you neck the piping down you increase the resistance to air flow, which causes less air flow through the vac impeller/basket. Less air means less work for the motor, so it will actually spin faster and draw less current. Matthias Wandel and a few others on YouTube have good vids of homebuilt vacs and discuss this. It is totally counter intuitive. My scrollsaw dust management at the moment is a central vac motor driven from a treadmill controller. I can spin it as light or hard as I want, up to 90 VDC. The motor and controller are mounted to a small cart with a dust deputy and a 1/2 gallon jar. Its quiet, but my family says it could be quieter. So I am working on a 'new' solution. I found an oil furnace at the dump this summer and salvaged the fire box blower motor and housing. I've got it mostly cleaned up, but dropped the motor and it landed on the fan basket and bent it all up, so it needs replaced. This fan will run from an induction type motor so dead quiet, just like your HVAC system! It will only be single speed, but quiet is the goal and it should be.

    Dust Pump

I have a Shopvac brand shopvac (hang-up model). I use paper bags and cartridge filters from Amazon. I have clearly noticed that when the bag gets near full it starts exhausting fine dust. When a fresh bag is put in it works better. I replace the filter with bag changes. My personal experience.

    Dust Pump

I have a big Shopvac brand shopvac and I use the paper cartridge filters.. Also NOTE there are better filters too... For mine there is a standard paper filter and then there is a better one for smaller particles.. in my case it's a blue colored filter.. and the paper is more like a cloth? I'm not sure what it's made of but it is a different material. Plus as you already learned of about the bags.. I use the better bags made for fine dust.. I also bought a muffler for the exhaust air coming out of the back of the vac.. I really don't think it made it much quieter but the muffler is a foam thing that just clips into the exhaust port.. I imagine that might help with filtering a little too. I also have the grizzly ceiling mount dust filtration system which is just like the WEN you have. While that thing does get a lot of dust in the filter it is helping some.. The biggest one is just the cheap box fan with furnace filter.. it moves way more air than the ceiling mount thing, and works very well. Unfortunately the hand sanders is my biggest issue even though it doesn't spew out dust terrible as the dust filter / canister catches most of it.. it does spew some out of the side of the sander. I used to have a box fan / filter set up on the side where the dust spews out of that RO sander and it'd fill the filter up with dust at a sanding sesion.. I'd take it outside and tap the filter on the trash can and it'd look like a smoke cloud, LOL.. I have the Seyco scroll saw dust collection on the saw as well and that helps a lot too.. I just need to get a collection source for the top side of the saw table and I think 99% of it would be collected right at the source. I just think that, no matter how much collection and filtration you do.. there is probably going to be some fine dust settle every day because that is just the nature of making sawdust. LOL About 3-4 times a year I take my shop vac and a brush vac attachment and vac the whole shop.. all the tools and stands, walls, shop lights etc. etc. Pretty much takes a whole day to do a full cleaning.. While it's clean I use the Johnson's past wax and wax the saws, stands etc.. having the wax on the equipment helps keep the dust from sticking to them and makes for easier cleaning.. plus keeps rust of the table tops etc.

    Dust Pump

I have a Ridgid shop vac and it is great with no dust coming out. The dust filter in it works very well. On my scroll saw, I have my Festool dust extractor hooked up. It is HEPA rated and very quiet. Yes, expensive but very worthwhile for me. For the bigger tools, I have a dust collector plumbed throughout the shop.

    Dust Pump

My shop is 8 x 12 and I have two high quality shop vacs that are reasonably quiet installed with the best bags available. One is set up with my router table and or table saw. The other is set up for use with my bench band saw, drill press, disc sander and etc. I don’t use any vacuum for my scroll saw being I like it quite and wear a high quality face mask for protection. I clean up immediately after each mess eliminating any build up of dust and do the same at the end of each day ready for the next fresh. I’ve been doing this for twenty five years and I’ve never had any big issues with dust. Dust comes with the pleasure of wood working so each must manage it in their own way. This is my way.

  31. Okay, going to post this in a second forum, I posted it in "Other wood working" got little attention, and I thing it deserves more, This is cool, and would, I think, be a challenge to make. I have his carousel plans. Good service, good plans. Fact I think I will add him to the pattern shop in resources. This must have taken some thought and trial and error. Check it out you toy builders especially. I will probably give it a try when I finish some other projects. It is a short video. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/927249010757861976/

  34. Not completely what I was looking for but I did find that Lowe's has a 5 gallon stainless tank, 4 HP Craftsman shop vacuum that several buyers have stated in product reviews is markedly quieter than other shop vacuums. I have in mind being able to mount this small vacuum underneath a scroll saw stand shelf and keep it hooked up to the saw. It will be easily removable for other uses. And at around $55 the price is within my budget. Thank you all folks for sharing your insight! Don

  35. I, like many of you, have cut numerous projects by Steve Good. Attached is just one of the many. It's made from walnut and mounted on a piece of bark from a live edge walnut. Thank you Steve for all of the years at my saw!

  40. Work in progress on Steve Good Valentine's Day pattern. I still need to paint them. The wood is 1/2" Ambrosia Maple left over from a previous project. As others have said, I have cut many of his patterns and they are a big part of what got me addicted to this marvelous hobby.

  42. That's a nice arrangement. It looks so well laid out. Below is my wall collection unit and the large chip cyclonic separator I made. I attach the hose to each individual machine as I start using them. No room for a permanent piping setup. I've been thrilled with this arrangement since I made the separator a couple years ago. It has a plywood baffle inside the can that directs the chip flow and prevents large chips from accumulating and going up into the can output fitting and into the suction fan/bag. The scroll saw of course is a fine dust maker which would let me get by with a small cannister vacuum that rolls around with the saw. I agree I'll be better off with a shop vac attached to my wife's and my scroll saw(s). Quieter sure would be best though. I appreciate everyone's thoughts and time here. Don
