  2. This is like my 4th project that I've cut since returning to scrolling. All have been his patterns so far. This one is a mess, but it's the only one I feel comfortable sharing. *blush*

  3. Its been about 5 weeks since my back surgery (MIS TLIF) and though things are getting better, they are not back to normal yet. Its going to be a few more weeks until I can back in the shop to start cutting again (too cold also). Before my surgery I had some interesting discussions with my surgeon about my procedure and aviation. It seems that he is a pilot of the Cirrus SR22 single engine aircraft. This aircraft has be out selling Cessna aircraft for several because of all the latest incorporated technology. He has some business in the midwest and he can make it nonstop there but he would really like to upgrade to the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet. It's the least expensive single engine jet, fastest selling single pilot jet on the market today. It has the most advance avionics and also an emergency parachute system and a automatic navagation/landing system that will take the aircraft to the nearest airport and land. It seats 5 with a 1,200 mile range and max altitude of 37K'. It goes for about 2+ million. I made it before my operation and gave it to him on my followup visit after my surgery. He was amazed and really surprised I made it for him. Maybe I can bum a ride some day.

  4. Two non-puzzles finished. Patterns by Harvy Blyer. I used 3/4" Poplar approximately 8" square. Cut on the Pegas scroll saw using Pegas #3 MGT and #5 MGT for the veining. After sanding, dipped in diluted Shellac. Comments welcome

    Two for one

It takes about the same time to cut 2 instead of one, double up the 1/4” hardwood and you have two baskets done

  8. I, like many of you, have cut numerous projects by Steve Good. Attached is just one of the many. It's made from walnut and mounted on a piece of bark from a live edge walnut. Thank you Steve for all of the years at my saw!

  9. Hello all, I recently purchased this set of 16 stencils from Amazon to make trivets and coasters. They are about 6 inches square and made from a thin flexible plastic, you can attach them to a piece of paper then using a fine pen or pencil simply draw around the cut outs in the stencil and this will give you your pattern for scrolling. The method I use however is to place a piece of dark card behind the stencil and then scan it on my printer. I can then print of the design at whichever size I wish. The second picture is one I am making at the moment. Hope this gives some of you some ideas for trivets and coasters. Regards, Alan.

  13. Hi, I'm Bill, I was away from woodworking and hobbies for a period of time. Life has a funny way of directing and changing our paths. This past holiday season my wife found a used oldie on FB Marketplace. For $75 on the stand. I couldn't pass it up. I'm not sure if it was used much at all. Before I had an old craftsman pinned blade version and I used it for cutting parts for RC airplanes. Between my eyes and other things, I can't fly RC's or parachutes anymore. I decided to give this a go. I'm hooked. I'm going to have to get a better saw though. Feeding these pinless blades through a hole and keeping them from bending is a challenge without an articulating arm. I enclosed the porch and use a buddy heater to have a place to work. We live tiny and so I don't have a work area. It's comfortable though and I enjoy it for hours at a time. Some nights it's just too cold, but all in all it's enjoyable. I am really enjoying basic stuff, but can see wanting to really learn Intarsia and portrait type stuff. ~BK PS, HUGE Thank you to Travis for creating a dark theme so that I can see and participate. It's nice that there are still kind people left in this world.

    tree with a twist

Hi everyone, just finished this tree that Fish was kind enough to put in the pattern library for us. Thanks Fish. I did it a little different. I burnt the heart and initials in instead of cutting them. Thought it might look a little more realistic. There was a lot of blade changes in this pattern. I have a couple more to do.This one is for my granddaughter.

  18. @Gene Howe I like mesquite and enjoy working with it. It is hard and dense and it is dark and finishes up very nicely; some would say it looks rustic. You are lucky to have live edge boards, you can use that to achieve a great rustic look. A lot of mesquite does have cracks, knots, etc and you do have to be judicious in using it. For scrolling, I resaw and plane mine to the desired size and thickness, paying attention to flaws in the wood. I often place the pattern to work around the flaws and to use the character of the wood to go with the character of the pattern. It is an interesting wood to work with. Post pictures when you do something with yours.

    User Interface Tour

thank you Travis. I was able to find the program and get it on my computer. I appreciate your help. I am anxious to try and learn this so that is becomes as a routine thing to make the portrait patterns, at least this is the goal I have right now.

    Dust Pump

385 at the wheels from a 2 liter! Amazing power to weight. That is my car ~1600 lbs and the motor tweaked to 150 from 89 hp on the Dyno. Regarding The Festool RO all other sanders that I have used tire my hands (vibration) This one does not. Also when you turn it off it stops almost instantly. and with the vacuum attached no dust. Someone just came out with a new Vacuum that is super quiet and at a really great price, one of the big name brands. I just cant remember who.

I now have a 1984 Nissan 300ZX and also ( not really a classic but still a toy ) a 2007 Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged with a built 2.0 4cyl. tuned to run on alcohol ( E85 ), dynoed at 385HP at the wheels.. That thing would run circles around my last toy that I sold a few years back which was a 1971 Chevelle SS.. also beats the MPG too so I can actually afford to take it out a little more, LOL. I built it to do time attack racing but I still need to do the suspension work for that and actually having fun just driving it around the streets may not even race it now. I bought the car last spring with a blown motor ( timing chain guide bolt broke and took out the valves and pistons ) and built it over the summer. The 300ZX needs a lot of work but was a 1 owner low mile car from Florida, it was my oldest sons project then my youngest bought it. I found a real nice one on marketplace so my youngest bought it and sold me the "project" LOL. Probably end up selling them, I'm not much of a collector... more of a builder / restorer and then move them on and start another build, LOL.. I've really been looking at the Festool RO sanders.. how do you like yours? I might splurge one day soon and buy the vac and a sander.. Been on my mind for a few years almost bought the vac last weekend when I was browsing through the local dealer..

Some of them are the exact same look as another brand I've seen but can't think of what brand it was now, lol... I've bought my share of their tools and for light use most of them worked for what I needed.. other than one sawzall I bought about 12 years ago to cut some PCV pipe for some drain work I was doing for my septic / drainfield system.. the (unknown brand name) tool from there cut through the first piece of 4" pipe just fine but half way through the second cut the plastic gears inside the tool stripped and then something come apart and smoke rolled out of the motor.. I'd of been happy with the tool if it would have lasted through about 6-8 more cuts so I could finish the job.. BUT.. the $6.99 I paid for it I guess I got what I paid for. I think they've been stepping up in quality over the last 5-6 years though.. I have a cordless impact that has taken a beating and still going strong.. Bought the Bauer brand leaf blower to blow the leaves out of the driveway so I can mulch them up with the mower without throwing rocks everywhere.. works great for blowing sawdust that has settles on my shop lights and blow the dust out the garage door instead of sweeping it up, LOL

  26. Yes, I am in the Knoxville area. The lady of who, you speak is considered to be one of the most prominent Intarsia experts around. Her name is Judy Gale Roberts and you can find her in Seymour,TN which is just a small area between Knoxville and Sevierville. I have had the pleasure of taking several of her classes since I started on the saw back almost seven years ago. I started with Intarsia and her class right after I lost my mom. It was great means of helping me deal with the loss. (I had already lost my dad many years before.) Since I leave so close, I would drive over each day. It’s only about 30 minutes or so from my house. She used to do 3 levels of classes, beginners, intermediate, and advanced but has such a long waiting list that she is trying to focus on the beginner classes and has eliminated the advanced classes. She only does a few classes each year and they fill up quickly so if you really are interested, I would recommend you call and get on her waiting list as it could be a while. I know her 2023 classes are full. You can find her website here: https://intarsia.com Even if you aren’t ready to take her class, or can’t get in for a bit, but are in the area, it’s a treat to stop in at her shop and see all of her work on display. pits been a while since I did any Intarsia as I kept expanding my scrolling thanks to everyone here in the avillage over the years. I need to get back to it and finish a few pieces I’ve had sitting around now for awhile.

    Dust Pump

Fighting "micro dust" has spawned an entire industry. You can buy air purifiers starting in the $100's and proceeding into the $1000's. I concluded to use an N-95 face mask and let the rest fall where it may. Bruce

  33. Great cutting, Thurman. How does mesquite cut? I've got several good sized 8/4 slabs for tables and, a number of 4/4 planks. All live edge. Most have lots of worm holes of various descriptions. You never know what you'll find when you open up one with the BS. I'd think you'd need to be quite judicious in selecting stock for scrolling. Hey, Happner Guy, you ever try it? Mine comes from Dead Tree Salvage near you.
