  2. Valentine Gnomes is a Steve Good pattern. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood approximately 12" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1 blades. I stained the heart with Samen stain Raspberry. Dipped in diluted Shellac, sanded and then one coat with spray Lacquer clear satin. Comments welcome.

    Two for one

It takes about the same time to cut 2 instead of one, double up the 1/4” hardwood and you have two baskets done

  4. Its been about 5 weeks since my back surgery (MIS TLIF) and though things are getting better, they are not back to normal yet. Its going to be a few more weeks until I can back in the shop to start cutting again (too cold also). Before my surgery I had some interesting discussions with my surgeon about my procedure and aviation. It seems that he is a pilot of the Cirrus SR22 single engine aircraft. This aircraft has be out selling Cessna aircraft for several because of all the latest incorporated technology. He has some business in the midwest and he can make it nonstop there but he would really like to upgrade to the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet. It's the least expensive single engine jet, fastest selling single pilot jet on the market today. It has the most advance avionics and also an emergency parachute system and a automatic navagation/landing system that will take the aircraft to the nearest airport and land. It seats 5 with a 1,200 mile range and max altitude of 37K'. It goes for about 2+ million. I made it before my operation and gave it to him on my followup visit after my surgery. He was amazed and really surprised I made it for him. Maybe I can bum a ride some day.

    New take on a hold

My shop is in the basement of my 1930's farm house. As a result the floor to ceiling height is under 6 feet. I'm 6'4" so I walk around with my chin in my chest most all the time. While scrolling today a light bulb went off. Having a low ceiling is a good thing. My scrollsaw has 2 sewing machine lights so the arm doesn't stay up on its own. I was using a Steve Good "stand guy" to hold it up for blades. I looked up and the light bulb went off. Here's my solution, easy to use and keeps the deck clear for larger projects. Chris

  6. Hello all, I recently purchased this set of 16 stencils from Amazon to make trivets and coasters. They are about 6 inches square and made from a thin flexible plastic, you can attach them to a piece of paper then using a fine pen or pencil simply draw around the cut outs in the stencil and this will give you your pattern for scrolling. The method I use however is to place a piece of dark card behind the stencil and then scan it on my printer. I can then print of the design at whichever size I wish. The second picture is one I am making at the moment. Hope this gives some of you some ideas for trivets and coasters. Regards, Alan.

    New take on a hold

I'm confused... so are you trying to hold the upper arm of the saw up? That's what it looks like and if so.. all you need to do is adjust the arm tension set screw at the back of the saw on the opposite side of the motor you'll see a bolt / screw with a slot in it and a jam nut on it.. loosen the jam nut and use a flat head screwdriver and turn it in slightly until you get enough resistance to hold the arm up.. don't make it too stiff because then your arm will get sore trying to raise it up, LOL.. should move freely and fairly easy yet have enough tension to stay in the up position on it's own.. might have to play around with in a few times to get it where you want it but man that sure beats having to hold it up in some way.. There are instructions in your manual for the adjustment as well..

    The Tomb

Spent a couple hours this morning designing my version of "The Tomb", with the 3 crosses of Calvary, made from 3/4" standard pine, just free-handed the pieces on some thin boards for templates, then traced the templates to the pines boards, then cut each piece out, then took each piece to the spindle sander and contoured the edge of each piece to give a carved look, stained red mahogany and early American, glued all 4 layers together to make it 3" thick and stand very solid.......comments always welcomed. This was a gift for my mom for Easter this year.

    New take on a hold

That looks like a great solution. I might have been tempted to try a bungee cord just strong enough to hold it up with a clip on weight to pull it down when wanted.... Bruce

    Dust Pump

Might be wrong but I think he was talking about the Festool random orbital sander shutting off instantly when he turns it off. I've watched a live demo at the local wood expo show and the dust vacuum does run for 3-5 seconds after shutting the tool off.. so I think it's the same timer set up like the Fien

    Bauer tools

I have three Bauer sanders, two random orbit sanders, and one 1/4-sheet orbital sander. I bought these so I would not need to change paper between grits and because they were the only ones I could find that had a round dust port that I could adapt quickly for connecting to my shop vacuum. They work well enough but are in a different class than my Hitachi sander.

  16. I have a Bauer planer and it works great. I only use it occasionally that's why I didn't go the extra bucks for a Dewalt. I also have a Bauer 4x36 sander with a 6in disc. Works great. The only complaint on the sander is the table for the disc has no support arm under it. If you happen to put a little pressure on it it moves. I keep it at 90 degrees and check it often. I was in HF the other day and checked their floor model. they have not changed anything, but it was solid as a rock. I couldn't get it to move and I put a lot of pressure on it. Course it's to late to exchange mine. Anyway, they have some decent tools and some not so good. I checked all the sander reviews before I purchased mine and their are a half dozen brands out there that look exactly a like.

  17. My husband surprised me with a scroll saw for Christmas. He bought me a used Somerville Excalibur 30 from an estate sale. Right now, I’m working my way through some of the exercises in the Scroll Saw Workbook, but I am an artist and I have lots of ideas for projects!

  18. I'll definitely look into that. This saw is still pretty new to me. Took some trial and error just to get the vibration out ant straight vertical cut. But yea, just trying to hold the arm up fro blade changes. Thanks

  19. You're looking at the bread crumbs navigation. The thing that says "Dark Theme Mode?" is the title of this forum thread. What you're looking for is below the social media icons at the bottom of the screen. There is a line that says Theme, Privacy Policy, User Guidelines, Staff, Contact Us. Click the Themes. A pulldown will appear and will show 2 options. One called Default Theme, and another called Dark Theme. Choose Dark Theme to change to dark mode. Let me know if that doesn't work for you.

    Dust Pump

Interesting on the Festool shutting off instantly. My Fien would continue to run a second or so after the tool was turned off, the advertised reason was to remove any dust collect and still in the hose once you shut the tool off. I am seriously thinking about the new Dewalt quiet vac. It is smaller than my big Ridgid which is noisy. Be easier to make a cart that will hold the vac and dust deputy. But I do not think the normal shop vacs are made to be going on and off constantly like they would attached to a scroll saw. I could be wrong.

  29. Like those designs and your putting them on a baord with a handle is an intriguing idea. Also wondering what the wood is on that beautiful table. At first I thought it is Cherry but looking closer I'm not so sure. Did you make it, can't imagine it is from a furniture store? Positioning of each board in the glue up is well done.

    Dust Pump

385 at the wheels from a 2 liter! Amazing power to weight. That is my car ~1600 lbs and the motor tweaked to 150 from 89 hp on the Dyno. Regarding The Festool RO all other sanders that I have used tire my hands (vibration) This one does not. Also when you turn it off it stops almost instantly. and with the vacuum attached no dust. Someone just came out with a new Vacuum that is super quiet and at a really great price, one of the big name brands. I just cant remember who.

    Daddy's Hand

Shows up a bit better in person. I've cut and given this one many times. I honestly believe a person could stay busy cutting this one pattern to sell. Everyone seems to relate to it in some way. I cut one to give away in a drawing at our local meals on wheels and the lady in charge asked if she could please have it, as her 3 month old grandchild is having serious health issues. So I cut this one this afternoon to take its place. What a cool hobby we have! Use it to bless someone, and it'll be you.

  43. Here is one of Steve's patterns, I cut sometime back. As most of you know I am a Treekie from way back. I saw this pattern and was In Love. I have it hanging here in my room, and am looking at it as I type. I have done quit a few of Stve's pattern's and will do more.

  47. I have cut many patterns of Steve's, more so when I first started out, not as much lately. The Army flag below was for a co-workers son that was in the Army. I am rather proud of the super straight lines that I cut on this piece... I must have been having a good day in the shop when I cut this. LOL

  48. A couple of windchimes I made back in 2019. The snowman I still have and use every Christmas. The Welcome sign I made for a couple girl friends of mine, we were in a crafting group together. The Anita one is for a friend in New York. My eyesight was a lot better back then.

  49. Steve's catalog was the first I found for available patterns when I started scrolling. This piece was actually the second I ever cut and I gave it to my wife who is a dog mom through and through. She was a dog trainer and trained the police dogs for the agency I worked with. I was the firearms instructor and she came to the range wanting lessons. That was how we met. Anyway, the "Dogs Welcome" sign hangs on our front door to this day.
