Using up Scraps
Phantom Scroller and 4 others reacted to Scrappile for a topic
Played around yesterday cut this out of a piece of scrap 1/4" BB. Well I say scrap but with the cost of BB any more, none of it is scrap! I have a couple more to cut. I am a sucker for the little gnomes! This is a Steve Good one. And check out this beautiful piece of canary wood, being prepared for another project. May be my favorite wood.5 points -

We have been quite busy since before Christmas and I finally found some time to get back into my Scroll Saw Village family. Yesterday my wife asked me to make something new to add to her Valentines decorations so I found this Sue Mey pattern and asked her if she like it and I got a resounding "YES, VERY MUCH". I immediately went to the shop and cut this one for her. I have been away from here for about 2 months and I am so happy to be back here with all of you. I will go back and try to post some of the items I have not yet posted just so you know I have been doing some items in my shop as well. Dick heppnerguy4 points -

Thumb screw knob
scrollingforsanity and 2 others reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
Correct. Over-tightening the clamp screws can also lead to spreading the clamp body apart, especially on Dewalt blade clamps. I think these kinds of supplemental knobs are great for those with reduced grip strength and/or other physical issues that make it difficult to properly tighten the clamp screws, but if they are being used simply to solve the problem of blades slipping out of the clamps, then they can be problematic.3 points -

The Tomb
heppnerguy and 2 others reacted to smitty0312 for a topic
Spent a couple hours this morning designing my version of "The Tomb", with the 3 crosses of Calvary, made from 3/4" standard pine, just free-handed the pieces on some thin boards for templates, then traced the templates to the pines boards, then cut each piece out, then took each piece to the spindle sander and contoured the edge of each piece to give a carved look, stained red mahogany and early American, glued all 4 layers together to make it 3" thick and stand very solid.......comments always welcomed. This was a gift for my mom for Easter this year.3 points -

For that problem, I fold a piece of 220 sandpaper in half and slide it between the clamp screws every once in a while just enough to rough them up. Just a bit.2 points

I didn't want to hijack someone else's thread, so I brought this here. The program I use is " Big Print " by Wood Gears. I've been using it for several years now and it will easily do what I need. The first pattern I used it on was a Steve Good pattern of an old Ford truck, I enlarged the 8.5 x 11 " pattern to 7' long; about 28 pages all told and the program will add an alignment grid to each page, that really helped. The second pattern was the fancy Welcome sign pattern that I have. The pattern is 5" wide as is and I have some 1/4 " stack that is 4 1/2" wide. I as able to easily resize the pattern to fit my existing stock. And the third use was for compound patterns, When I printed the patterns the first time they printed at 1 3/4" and the stock was 1 1/2". The patterns were "supposed" to print at 1 1/2" but.....computers. Big print solved this issue. I had previously used every graphics package for Linux that I could find an every single one of them had issues printing to a specific size ( GIMP was the worst, 5 different settings, spread all over the place, I was chatting with a GIMP Guru and even she missed a setting, and there is no way to save a "printer configuration file" that could be loaded ahead of printing. With big print I can adjust the printing characteristics for each printer and get the printing accuracy down to a pixel. Normally this is not really necessary but it's nice to know it's there.2 points

Just be aware that with the knobs it's easy to over-tighten them and strip out the threads in the aluminum clamps.2 points

Thumb screw knob

If you search Steve Goods blog spot, he has a pattern for round ones also.2 points -
Thanks Melanie, the one I made was round. I think I can do something with one of those. I remember my thumb screw was glued into the wood knob and was permanent. I think the Pegas knob is a little different.2 points

Is this the one you had from Steve? https://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2009/12/dewalt-dw788-thumb-screw-upgrade.html A search for “thumb screw” on his blog gives a lot of articles he has done in regards to different ones, easier methods to try, etc. so may be worth a perusal through to get some other possible ideas or sources of different types of knobs to use. one idea he shared was switching to a round thumb screw offered by Seyco: https://www.seyco.com/qkm-05-round-knob-assembly-metric/ Also an old video he did on different ways to make more comfortable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlCFMK4n5nE This is just a few things he has shared over the years.2 points

Decorative Bowl, Scroll Saw Project Video
frankorona and one other reacted to artisanpirate for a topic
Hey Everyone! In this scroll saw project video I make a unique decorative bowl. This Steve Good design uses 1-4 inch material and I think it shows the versatility of the scroll saw! Not only can a scroll saw cut out 2 dimensional items, it can also make Beautiful 3D works of art! Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate2 points -

Getting better, Vision Jet
frankorona and one other reacted to munzieb for a topic
Its been about 5 weeks since my back surgery (MIS TLIF) and though things are getting better, they are not back to normal yet. Its going to be a few more weeks until I can back in the shop to start cutting again (too cold also). Before my surgery I had some interesting discussions with my surgeon about my procedure and aviation. It seems that he is a pilot of the Cirrus SR22 single engine aircraft. This aircraft has be out selling Cessna aircraft for several because of all the latest incorporated technology. He has some business in the midwest and he can make it nonstop there but he would really like to upgrade to the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet. It's the least expensive single engine jet, fastest selling single pilot jet on the market today. It has the most advance avionics and also an emergency parachute system and a automatic navagation/landing system that will take the aircraft to the nearest airport and land. It seats 5 with a 1,200 mile range and max altitude of 37K'. It goes for about 2+ million. I made it before my operation and gave it to him on my followup visit after my surgery. He was amazed and really surprised I made it for him. Maybe I can bum a ride some day.2 points -

Going to be beautiful, Dick... Love how you paint the backer. Well don't know if I love how you do it because I do not know how you do it. But I love the results. I purchased a pretty good air brush a while back but have not had the nerve to try it yet. Is that what you are using and what kind of paint? I think we are glad you are back also you alway seem to liven up the place some.1 point -

Marg, I don't mean to butt in on your conversation but I often think about Australia when I think about time differences and I believe you are 19 or 20 hours ahead of us in Arizona. Blows me away to think about that. It is particularly interesting to think about on New years as we are in different time and years for most of our New Years Eve. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Yes I put pop rivets in mine glue into the outer case and it spins on them here's another you can have a go at on A4 Size paper you can see the pins. I've modified less rings as they were a bit thin to cut in A4 MAD ME DIZZY. bunny sample.svg1 point -
I'm confused... so are you trying to hold the upper arm of the saw up? That's what it looks like and if so.. all you need to do is adjust the arm tension set screw at the back of the saw on the opposite side of the motor you'll see a bolt / screw with a slot in it and a jam nut on it.. loosen the jam nut and use a flat head screwdriver and turn it in slightly until you get enough resistance to hold the arm up.. don't make it too stiff because then your arm will get sore trying to raise it up, LOL.. should move freely and fairly easy yet have enough tension to stay in the up position on it's own.. might have to play around with in a few times to get it where you want it but man that sure beats having to hold it up in some way.. There are instructions in your manual for the adjustment as well..1 point

There might be a better search term but, I went to Amazon and searched for "plastic stencils" and there are a ton of designs.. I think they are made for painting.. come think of it the wife has some she got from one of the local box stores that are some sort of flower and leaf stems etc.. she got them to paint a decoration around our cabinet door in our utility room.. Hmm, I'd have never thought about searching for those.. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=plastic+stencils&crid=1GFV05Q4N36NW&sprefix=plastic+sten%2Caps%2C194&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_121 point -
