I asked for help for a pattern to make a portrait for a friend’s wife of her musician husband. Grandpa got me started and I took it from there. My friend often plays Bluegrass in his shed, so I expanded the picture a little bit.I also added a few details to his beard. I’ve done better guitars, but this is ok, I guess. Three pics included: one of the picture Grandpa used, one of his pattern that he did, one of the almost finished piece. Thanks for your help, Paul!5 points

family and forever plaque

We have been quite busy since before Christmas and I finally found some time to get back into my Scroll Saw Village family. Yesterday my wife asked me to make something new to add to her Valentines decorations so I found this Sue Mey pattern and asked her if she like it and I got a resounding "YES, VERY MUCH". I immediately went to the shop and cut this one for her. I have been away from here for about 2 months and I am so happy to be back here with all of you. I will go back and try to post some of the items I have not yet posted just so you know I have been doing some items in my shop as well. Dick heppnerguy5 points -

Stopped by my local Harbor Freight store today to pick up some mats to use under my treadle saw that were on sale. While I was there I stumbled across these "micro drill bits." They didn’t come with an index, but for $2.99 I couldn’t pass them up. Unfortunately (for me) they’re metric but a quick search for a conversion table gave me a ballpark size. They ranged from 0.5mm (~#76) up to 3.0mm (~#31). If you’re interested in just a small hole for blade entry these should do just fine.3 points

My shop is in the basement of my 1930's farm house. As a result the floor to ceiling height is under 6 feet. I'm 6'4" so I walk around with my chin in my chest most all the time. While scrolling today a light bulb went off. Having a low ceiling is a good thing. My scrollsaw has 2 sewing machine lights so the arm doesn't stay up on its own. I was using a Steve Good "stand guy" to hold it up for blades. I looked up and the light bulb went off. Here's my solution, easy to use and keeps the deck clear for larger projects. Chris3 points

You can buy adapters for routers to use the Roto Zip Bits, also 3/32" and 1/8" shank bits made for Dremel tools to use them in the smaller router 1/4" collets. They exist, but are sometimes hard to find. For tiny bits like these to be able to use them in a drill press, there is a small chuck with short hex shaft intended for use in hand drills like those impact drills, and these can be chucked into the larger drill press chucks that are common in drill presses, since frequently these larger chucks don't tighten far enough to hold these tiny bits. With one of these small drill chucks installed in the large drill press chuck, you can then add just about any tiny drill bit, or Dremel type bit. I actually use even tinier bits than Dremel. I have an air powered tool that is about the size of a fat Magic Marker that uses 1/16" bits and spins at about 200,000 RPM, running on 40 PSI of air pressure. An air brush compressor will run it. It's a modified Dentist Drill and I do relief carving with it, like you have seen on fancy gun stocks and small high-end woodworking. At 200,000 RPM there is no side pull when cutting, like you get at lower Dremel speeds, so it's much easier to use for fine carving. I have recently posted a cross with vines and leaves cut out with the scroll saw and then the vines and leaves were shaped using this air powered carver. Charley3 points

I answered solid wood, because, all things being equal, I prefer scrolling solid wood. However, I probably cut just as much BB ply as solid wood, because for many projects, it just works better.3 points -
It really depends on the project. I would rather cut solid wood but on some projects solid wood is to weak and I use plywood. I have cut other materials. MDF and laminated flooring cone to mind.3 points

You should have also put a mix in. Depends on the project. The results as they are would be about what I am cutting too!3 points -
Check out the poll at the top of the thread. Just a quick poll to see what kind of materials folks are mostly putting on their saw. Just out of curiosity.2 points

Drill bits

Great tip. Another place to look is if you know what guage you want, just look for them on amazon. I use #72 and they are hard to find and pricey but cheap on amazon and work just fine.2 points -
just draw the top of the thumb screw into a piece of wood and cut out whatever shape you want. Thats what I did. Little trial and error to get it to fit tight and that was it.2 points
-
If I was to guess, I bet I mostly use BB Ply. I do love cutting Poplar, though. It cuts so nicely.2 points

What Do You Cut?
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to scrollingforsanity for a topic
I cut BB and hardwoods both. Maybe more BB because of all the ornaments I cut.2 points -
I've used a fair amount of it too and have never seen the inside look like that. Typically the inside is bright purple and will fade into a brownish purple over time on the outside. post a photo of the pen when finished. I'd like to see how it ends up.2 points

I use baltic birch but have used other laminated woods like oak, walnut and ash for portraits and ornaments. I also keep a supply of hardwoods for other projects2 points -

I got one of these back when I had a Dewalt, and it worked great: https://mikesworkshop.com/collections/accessories/products/quick-lever as others have said, just make sure to not over tighten. Steve2 points -
I most often use hardwood. How about you Travis?2 points

Right now it's mostly hardwoods. But there are times when I do portraits in BB ply.2 points

I cut mostly hardwood along with BB ply. I have cut moose horn and plexiglass.2 points -
I have cut plexiglass / plastic cardboard. Branches and log slices < 2 inches. And once an aluminum 1/8 inch. But I re-read the question "most often" cut.2 points
-
Kind of agree with Barb. I cut both BBply and solid hardwoods.. probably about equal amounts of both. Possibly more BB because I do make a lot of ornaments and some of my wall hangings are also BB with solid walnut backers.. only clocks and puzzles are solid hardwoods.. some stuff is even standard plywood from the box stores.. Keep thinking about trying some soft metals too at some point.2 points

Funny story. I wanted an arm lifting type thing but of course I am too cheap to buy one so figured I would simply figure it out. I moved my saw under the open garage door where there was a big nail in the door. I hooked up a long bungee cord around the top arm of the saw so when I let off tension it would automatically go up. Seemed to work great, that was until I finished sawing one day and got up and just closed the garage door. heard a loud thumping against the door. Opened the door back up and the saw was swinging in the air still connected to the bungee cord. Happily nothing broke but I wouldnt recommend this method.1 point

For that problem, I fold a piece of 220 sandpaper in half and slide it between the clamp screws every once in a while just enough to rough them up. Just a bit.1 point

Decorative Bowl, Scroll Saw Project Video
frankorona reacted to artisanpirate for a topic
Hey Everyone! In this scroll saw project video I make a unique decorative bowl. This Steve Good design uses 1-4 inch material and I think it shows the versatility of the scroll saw! Not only can a scroll saw cut out 2 dimensional items, it can also make Beautiful 3D works of art! Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate1 point -

I have a couple of those mounted to the ceiling joists above my saw. One is aimed from the left and one from the right, eliminating shadows. It works really well for me. They are up and out of the way and don't vibrate with the saw.1 point -
The VA has been great. I encourage you to keep at it with them. They are dispensing the very best and state of the art for hearing aids. I have been wearing them for 30+ years and the ability to link your phone to the hearing aids is great. Thank you for your service as well!!1 point

Getting better, Vision Jet
frankorona reacted to munzieb for a topic
Its been about 5 weeks since my back surgery (MIS TLIF) and though things are getting better, they are not back to normal yet. Its going to be a few more weeks until I can back in the shop to start cutting again (too cold also). Before my surgery I had some interesting discussions with my surgeon about my procedure and aviation. It seems that he is a pilot of the Cirrus SR22 single engine aircraft. This aircraft has be out selling Cessna aircraft for several because of all the latest incorporated technology. He has some business in the midwest and he can make it nonstop there but he would really like to upgrade to the Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet. It's the least expensive single engine jet, fastest selling single pilot jet on the market today. It has the most advance avionics and also an emergency parachute system and a automatic navagation/landing system that will take the aircraft to the nearest airport and land. It seats 5 with a 1,200 mile range and max altitude of 37K'. It goes for about 2+ million. I made it before my operation and gave it to him on my followup visit after my surgery. He was amazed and really surprised I made it for him. Maybe I can bum a ride some day.1 point -
