  2. Thinking I need to make something similar for ornaments. I try to finish ornaments in batches and sometimes the batch ends up being a couple hundred at a time..

    Showtime!

Here is my set up for this weekend's show. It should be interesting. Lots of "antique" booths. For the first time at any of the shows I have been to, there is another scroller. Thankfully his stuff is different than mine. He has a bunch of the "stickmen" sets and wildlife items. Looking forward to meeting him. I haven't met anyone else, in Winnipeg, that does scroll saw cutting.

    Wearable magnifier

I have something similar. I don't wear it much because if you look away from the work on the saw, like another part of the shop,, things get a little dizzy. I use my readers and a lighted magnifier.

  10. I have used an a Optivisor for engraving and woodcarving for years. They work great for me. I am new to scrollsawing, but have had good luck using it for that purpose. There are different levels of magnification with different distances from the lens to the work. Be sure that there is enough distance so that the upper part arm does not hit the magnifier. There is a bit of a learning curve getting used to it. I think that an Optivisor or other quality magnifier, would be better than cheaper ones (less headaches etc). You may want to buy from Amazon or somewhere else that takes returns.

    My First Trivet

I’ve been scrolling for nearly 20 years now and always thought about making a trivet when I see others post about them. I seen a book while shopping with my wife last fall that had trivets and put it on my Christmas list. This is fresh off the saw. Cut from 1/2” cherry using a Pegas #3 MGT blade. I had to modify the pattern slightly due to the drill bit got off centered in the center hole, there was supposed to be some other cutouts around the drilled hole but it went off center so I just cut the hole out larger and recentered it. Think it’ll look good once dipped in Danish oil to make the color pop. I intend to finish with DO, but was curious how others finish their trivets? Does anyone make trivets with a backer? I’m just wondering because I feel like this is going to be quite fragile. Originally designed to be about 10” diameter but I didn’t want to piece the pattern together since I no longer have my large format printer and I would have needed to do a glue up going that large so I opted to size it at large as I could on a single sheet of which makes it around 8 inch ish. One more question, how thick of material is best for trivets? I was going to go down to 3/8 but with the details of this and how fragile it could get I went with 1/2.

    Wearable magnifier

Can you use the varible lens in glasses? I have had the kind with no line. Love them. Been wearing them for years now.. I know of some that do not like them. I started with bifocals with the line but when I looked at the speedometer in the car I saw double vision... the varible lens cured that for me.

  19. I use a +1.5 magnification. But it's going to all depend on a persons visual acuity with and without correction. Also the focal distance thats the most comfortable for sawing.

A whiskey smoker is a tool used to add smoke and smokier flavor to a drink, usually an old fashioned. It typically consists of combustible wood chips or sawdust, a device to light it, and a box or dome to contain the smoke.

  27. After cataract surgery in both eyes I had to use readers. I hated carrying them. I was used to wearing glasses so I had some progressive lens made with clear on top half and progressive down from the middle. So I still wear my glasses all he time but no need for readers. I used a lighted magnifier from Harbor Freight with an LED bulb. So far, so good. My biggest thing is wearing a dust mask and having to take it off to drink anything. I'm looking for one with a tube/straw in it for sipping through.

  34. I married the girl next door 48 years ago. We were sweethearts in 7th-8th grades. Then reconnected in college. As kids we walked hand-in-hand at school and on country trails. So I made this portrait of us for her last year at Valentines Day.

    With Help From Grandpa!

I asked for help for a pattern to make a portrait for a friend’s wife of her musician husband. Grandpa got me started and I took it from there. My friend often plays Bluegrass in his shed, so I expanded the picture a little bit.I also added a few details to his beard. I’ve done better guitars, but this is ok, I guess. Three pics included: one of the picture Grandpa used, one of his pattern that he did, one of the almost finished piece. Thanks for your help, Paul!

    Wearable magnifier

Thanks for sending me off down a rabbit hole. I found a couple of the lower cost magnifiers that might be worth the money just to try them. I'm guessing that the magnification required for use on a scroll saw might be different for each person. Both of these come with a full set of lenses for you to try. The first one has glass lenses while the second one has plastic lenses. 42. A couple I've done over the years for my wife. Heart-gears was the most fun, I did three different sizes on that one. "Nugget's Place" was a sign I made for her Salcata tortise enclosure. The tortoise has outgrown the enclosure (she's big enough she can't squeeze under the shed or the fence), which is good because the sign did not survive the winter. July 4, 1776 I did for me. Rose box and "Love You" were also done for my wife.

  43. I always finish them with mineral oil. I don’t want a finish to mess up my kitchen pots or casseroles. I usually make them from 1/2 material.

  44. I usually make a card. This year I made the heart by Steve Good. My wife is a puzzle junkie so it is appropriate. I write the message on the back. A couple of years ago I did the card "I love you more than Ice Cream" and my wife gave me a card "love you more than chocolate' Both very appropriate

  47. Steve's Scroll saw Workshop was the first place I came across when I became interested in scrolling as a hobby. I have made quite a few of Steve's patterns and as Jim McDonald says above have learned much from him. These 2 patterns were my first attempts at using more than 1 layer of wood and although I still have much to learn, I was quite happy with the results.

  48. I have done several of Steve Good's patterns. With some knowledge of inkskape you are able to change them up to make them more challenging as you continue your scroll saw journey. The rose box was a segmented pattern he shared that I thought it would be nice on a box top done in intarsia. The cameo box was a fretwork box that I thought I might try doing it all inlayed.
