Bit the bullet on a new saw
scrollingforsanity and 8 others reacted to Tbow388 for a topic
I said if I kept working in my shop for 2 years that I would buy a saw that I wanted. I am going from a Delta to a brand new Pegas 21" I sure hope I like it and it does better than my delta. I am giving the delta to my brother. He REALLY wants one.9 points -

Great we can see 21 inch bowls, and cowboy Hats?2 points -
I do almost the same except I don't worry amount of turns, I put the blade in and turn the knob in the back until I feel I have the right tension. I pluck the blade to hear it and if the sound and feel say the right tension, I am off and scrolling. Now, if you compare my work to Dave's work, maybe you are better off listening to Dave!2 points

Hope you like it as well as I like mine.2 points -
I put the blade in, put the tension lever back, turn the back knob until I start to feel tension, turn 3/4 turn more for a #3 blade and a full turn for a #5 blade. After that I will not mess with the tension until my blade brakes or I go to a new blade. If that happens I double check it. That's how I tension mine.2 points

Hi Tim I bought a pristine, used Pegas 21 this past year. I made a stand for it and both have been great. You will not be disappointed.2 points -
Well that doesn't work the way I think it should.. If I turn that knob at the back so the arm is adjusted at approximately the right height to where the blade should slide right into the clamp then put tension on the blade it's too tight of a blade according to the video I watched, The video says to achieve proper tension turn ( loosen ) the knob until there is play in the rod and then tighten it just until there is some tension on the rod, then turn it 1/3 of a turn.. and up to 2 full turns more on larger blades if needed.. If I turn that so the arm is at the right height for the blade then tension it.. takes about 5 turns in order to get that slack in the rod at the back.. so doing that makes the blade about 3 turns over tighten.. On the Hawk they have if figured out to where you can change the distance between the upper and lower arms so you can adjust the top arm to bottom out at the right length of blade.. then set your tenson and it'll be the same every time you put in a new blade.. Unless of coarse you get one of those darn Pegas blades that has that extra little tip on the end sometimes.. At any rate it's not a big deal I guess to just bottom out the clamp onto the blade as Paul mentioned.. that's what I had been doing.. The Hawk just spoiled me I guess with all its adjustments.. I don't have to think about lowering the arm to a certain position and clamping the blade.. I just lower it all the way then insert the blade & clamp.2 points

Little Clock for Grandson
new2woodwrk reacted to Scrappile for a topic
I have a 21+ year old Grandson, that calls me 4 or 5 times a week just to check on me and Grandma. It is really nice, and I really appreciate it. So I wanted to make him a little something to put on his desk where he works. I made this little clock. Hope he likes it. The clock in made with Canary wood and the backer, just to enrich the clock and show off the canary wood a little more, is bloodwood. This is a Steve Good pattern. Someone else on here made one and I liked it, that is what led me to it.1 point -

RBI Hawk 220 Questions
scrollingforsanity reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
Yours looks fine. When they go bad, the wedge will have a rounded nose and the notch will be wallowed out to match. You can take a fine single cut file and dress the wedge and the notch but don't remove too much metal. Just clean them up. You definitely need a nylon washer to go between the tension adjustment lever and that wedge. You can probably find one at H/D for a few cents. The thicker the better. I mean by that in the 1/16" inch range. There are some that are thinner and won't last long. It acts as a "lube" point so that you're not rubbing metal against metal. If you can find a teflon washer, that would be even better.1 point -

Bit the bullet on a new saw

I have read that they used to be made in the same factory with a few little changes. Now the Excaliber switched to being made in China instead of Taiwan. I would have bought a Taiwan model but the china ones have had some problems.1 point -
Congrats on the new saw.. I always wanted to try a Pegas.. but it's probably not a lot different to use than my Excalibur..1 point

last week we was -4 at night and about 10 - 15 during the day.. this week way warmer.. global warming is happening fast. supposed to be about 60 today and right now almost 40 at 7am. lol.. I have heat in the shop but the walk to work can be terrible if it hasn't been shoveled yet. .. Today with all the snow melting and it's also raining. hopefully I don't get distracted and try fishing in the puddles..1 point

Congrats Tbow. I'm waiting on my Pegas to arrive. I've ordered the 30-inch and according to Denny it may be as late as July. I'm like a kid on Christmas eve but it's every day... waiting for it to arrive.1 point -
Love it Charlie. I actually saw this movie a couple of times. Marg1 point

If you replace this piece the clamps don't go to the floor.. they stay in the saw.. I had the same issue with my older Hawk.. These are made of plastic ( I've heard they have spring steel ones now but not certain they have it for the round clamp style.. My Untra has plastic ones and it gets weak and needs replaced every couple years.. The new BM saw has a spring steel one.. https://stores.bushtonhawkstore.com/barrel-style-blade-holder-clip/ This is really a pretty simple device and one could likely make one from some spring steel..1 point

Bob, I too have an older Hawk w/round barrel bottom clamps. When a blade would break the clamp seemed to always fly to the right side. I got tired of searching the floor for the bottom clamp when a blade broke so I taped a piece of cardboard to the top of the stand on the right side. Now if a blade breaks and the clamp goes flying the cardboard keeps it from leaving the top of the stand.1 point

I guess I'll have to go out and mess with my saw. I haven't touched anything in my shop in weeks. I'm not a fan of cold weather and it's been too darned cold here. It's starting to warm up though so maybe tomorrow I'll venture out.1 point

Grief plaques.
scrollingforsanity reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I often cut memorial plaques for people who I find out loose a loved ones. Often, years later, I have run into the receivers of the memorial plaques and say they appreciate them so much, even years later. Such a nice thing to do for others that is always around and never get thrown out like wilted flowers. Good for you. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

I can see you are really into bowl making right now. I want you to know that I am enjoying your new endeavor and seeing the beautiful bowls you are turning out. I still have to give this scroll saw bowl making a shot. Keep up the good work and keep posting them for all of us to see Dick heppnerguy1 point -
I see a lot of round ones because they can be turned easily on a lathe. Odd shaped not so much.1 point
