  1. I took some time off from scrolling after Christmas and I haven't had much time in the garage since I decided it was time to go back but I have managed to get these done. Hitchcock is for my daughter for Christmas and the oval names are for a neighbour who's got new additions to the family. Hitchcock is cut from 2.5mm bamboo in a shop bought frame and the names are cut from 5mm Blackheart Sassafras. Can't remember what blade I used for Hitchcock but I used PMG #3 for the names. (My new go to blades) Thanks go to CharlieE for telling me where to get the Hitchcock pattern. Marg

  2. Hey everybody. I haven't posted a lot lately because I have been very busy. This is a good thing with the price of everything going up we need all the help we can. . Here are just a few things I have been working on. Hope everyone is staying safe and warm. Sorry if the middle one offends anyone. My boss asked me to make it for her husband for Valentines day. Have a great day. Mimi

  3. That's was the purpose of super glue when it was invented. I bleed like a stuck hog when I nick myself also due to the meds I'm on. Glad you got it stopped before you bled to death.

  4. While working in my shop this morning I nicked my Thumb on my scroll saw blade. I always blead a bunch even if it's something minor. Of coarse I was getting blood all over the project I was working on. I thought that if they can use super glue instead of stitches it might just make a good bandage. Worked great.

  5. A modified Sue Mey pattern to fit 1" x 4" x 10" Hard Maple. Cut on the Pegas scroll saw using a Pegas #5 MGT blade. One side says "TEACH". Flip it over and the other side says "LEARN". After sanding, dipped in diluted Shellac, sanded again and another dipping. Comments welcome.

  6. When they say blood sweat and tears went into a project they didn't actually mean real blood sweat and tears I don't think.. My son has always used super glue.. even as a young child he'd rather have the glue than a band-aid... I'd rather have a band-aid myself but the glue does work well..

    My new saw

My new Hegner arrived Tuesday. It was supposed to be dropped off at my door. I woke up Tuesday morning and forecast was for rain, all day. Rain. In the middle of winter in Minnesota. I didn’t take that into account. Thank goodness a neighbor was able to keep an eye out and bring it in for me. I bought the 18” with stand, magnifying lamp, and quick change. My thoughts so far: I was pleased that it came very well packaged. It was easy to get everything set up. This saw is the exact same height as my Ex so that’s nice. I took off the hold down and the arm that holds it. I was amazed at how sturdy that was! Once everything was set up, I practiced putting in and taking out a blade. Did that about 20 times and said to myself it’s time to make dust. I took the lower blade cover off, it was in the way. The footprint is considerably smaller than that of the EX. Yes, the Hegner has a much smaller table, but that shouldn’t affect what I do, as I generally, am making small parts. I drew a few lines and circles in scrap walnut and put in a Pegas modified #5, my go to blade and off I went. Very quiet, no vibration at all, the blower worked very well. I hooked my my Fein to it and reversed the blower to be a vac. Hose for the shop vac fit, cool! The suction on on top was in my opinion terrible. I don’t care about that because I didn’t know about that until after I purchased it. My first piece was a Rook for a chess set that I am making. 1 1/4” square mahogany. I used a Pegas #5 Super Skip, recommended by Denny at ArtCrafters. (How’s that fair shameless plug). Man, what a saw, cutting that piece was as smooth as a fresh jar of Skippy Peanut Butter. The magnifier will be the hardest thing to get used to. I’ve made about 6 of the chess pieces and just really like this saw. Patti at Advanced Machinery, who I purchased it from, was fun to work with. I have yet to break a blade, or have a blade slip. Both of EX’s the blade slipped pretty much all the time, even with the new clamps from Pegas. After just a few hours on the saw, I can say that it is worth every penny. Thanks again to all who have offered their opinions on getting a new saw.

    My new saw

Glad you are happy with your Hegner. I really like mine. I had issues with my magnifier when attached to the saw as the small amount of vibration was uncomfortable to my eyes. It is mounted off to the side now. Your comment about dust collection with the Loc-Line is interesting. Mine does a good job if blowing the dust away from the cutting line. I can aim it anyway I want. I also have a larger Loc-Line up top which is hooked to a vacuum.

Thanks Ralph. Start out by taking a small piece of scrap ⅛” thick. Draw a shape. It can be a circle or whatever. Take a second piece of scrap of the same thickness and tape it to the back of the first piece so it’s underneath the shape you drew. Now drill a starting hole anywhere on the line. Next tilt your table 1 degree to your left. Now cut out what you drew going counter clockwise. When you’re done the top piece is waste and the bottom piece should fit in fairly snug protruding above a little. So now after you glue that piece in just sand it flush. This is what is called double bevel cutting. After you’ve practiced cutting a couple you’ll then feel comfortable cutting a pattern. When you’re ready let me know and I’ll forward you a pattern of a bunting bird. Sample attached.

I would love an Hegner to go with my DeWalt and Ex21. Could get them easily years ago but not any more unless I buy one from overseas and take out a bank loan for the shipping. Congratulations hope you and your saw get many years together. Marg

  15. Congrats! I'm happy for you. I look forward to your ongoing reports. If you are having trouble with the magnifier try mounting it to something not connected to the saw.

  20. I received my Wen LL2156 scroll saw on 12/5/22. Today it produced a bad rattle and vibration. I found a piece of bearing race on the saw stand. Not sure exactly where it came from. I returned the saw to Home Depot today under the 90 day return policy (saw was purchased online from HD). Went home and ordered a new Wen LL2156. Delivery should be tomorrow.

  22. I purchased a 6 pattern set last year and made the truck then. Made the coupe today... at this rate, 4 more years and I'll have all 6 completed! LOL The coupe was made with a Cedar body and some Pine fenders. I used BLO as a finish. I knew that both the Cedar and Pine would probably not look good with any kind of finish so I took the easy way out and used the BLO. Btw, the truck has a Maple body and Walnut fenders.

  23. Some cuttings I did this week. Not sure exactly how I intend to finish up the John 3:16 as it’s just 1/8” bbply. Thinking about making a slightly larger heart shape backer from Walnut. Trivets cut from 1/2” Cherry and will probably be dipped in Danish oil once I get a few more things made. Also worked on doing some gluing pieces together for the Cogsworth project I’ve been working on in the sideworks. Have also done some cutting board glue ups that maybe one day I’ll laser something on them.

    Here for comments

I have made a few personal portrait patterns and enjoyed the outcome of most of them. I struggled to go through the step by step procedures, that took my so long to achieve my goal, so I do not take the effort to make one very often. This year I plan on making enough of them to be able to go through the procedures in my head without the long process. So I once again took the long time effort to once again begin my effort to learn this process in my head. I fail to take the time to learn new things that take time to learn, so I don't bother to put out the efforts. Here is my newest efforts and I am looking for comments that are on the negative lines. I want people to point out where my weakest parts of this and my future efforts could use some advise so I can see it through someone else's eyes and help me to be more aware of where I need to pay more attention. I understand that we are not here to critique other people's work, but to support them in their efforts to learn. I understand that I am a mediocre scroller, at best, but I have been scrolling for a number of years and still make a lot of mistakes. Please help me, if you choose to and let me hear your thoughts so I might be able to improve as I go along, trying to learn. Dick heppnerguy

    My new saw

Yes, the 1/4 inch Loc-Line not suitable for vacuum. I am using 3/4 inch on my Hegner for vacuum and works well. Here is A pic that I have posted before of my Hegner. This works for me. Others here have posted other variations that work well.

The Loc-Line does a wonderful job of blowing away the dust. It’s when I hook it up to the vac that isn’t good. Maybe I need to get the bigger Loc-Line?

    My new saw

I didn't figure you'd go wrong with the Hegner once I got first hand experience with one myself with my recent used purchase of one.. I don't think the blade changing / tensioning is as bad as I've seen people mention and certainly not as picky as a Hawk.. Thanks for "trying and reporting " on that dust collection port.. I've been real tempted to buy that thing and now that I've seen two people say they wasn't quite up to par. I'll just save my money and make something of my own up..

    Happy Little Accident

After cutting this piece, a crack showed up at the top that really took away from it. It looked to just be on the surface so I tried sanding it out with the edge of my orbital sander but it was deeper than it looked and I sanded a noticeable low place. I liked the way it looked so I kept doing it. Made this pretty piece of Sycamore prettier.
