I'm back.....Slowly
Kris Martinson and 10 others reacted to munzieb for a topic
I had my back fusion surgery (L4-L5) 12/13 but have not been scolling since late November. This is my first attempt since then. I scoll standing so I can't do it for too long before I have to take a break. I have a neighbor that is always talking about the '59 Chevy Impala his dad used to have so I thought I would surprise him. The funny thing about the 59 is that both the front and back are interesting with the big grill in the front and the wide "V" shape in the back. I did the front with elements of the V back also. If he likes it the other way, the back is actually easier to cut and I'll do that too. My wife greyscaled a picture I found and added some bridges. Frame is 16 x11 on BBW with shellac and gloss lacquer. I'll update once I get it to him.11 points -

Clocks Scroll Saw Challenge

Of all the scroll saw projects I have designed throughout the years, clocks were always my favorite subject. I especially like them because they are "alive" and they serve a function. By the response to "CLOCKS" this month, it is a very popular subject. My very first and favorite was the original 1880, NORMANDY model from Italy. . Here are a few of my favorite clock designs. (The grandfather clock below is over 6 feet tall and designed to be made with a 16" scroll saw.... )7 points -

Wife Penny says "this scrolling is addictive". I agreed!

For the 3rd day, my Beloved Penny spent time in the shop with our Wen 16 inch model. Yesterday was a 4 hour session. I urged her to take all the time she wants. She didn't stop until I had our supper on the table. These are just a few of her creations, and she's modeling her new shop apron. I found a pack of two just alike. one for each of us in matching teal color. She says scrolling is "addictive" to which I agreed. Don.5 points -

Some really nice clocks posted. I really like the Dragon designs whose patterns are they? I have just finished two more clocks as a test cutter for SSWWC magazine (no pictures yet). It was a bit of an eye opener seeing the prices on the larger inserts. 4-1/2" I have made many clocks, three of them actual gear clocks. My first one was just after joining our local club it is about 10" tall. The rest have all been cuts for the magazine. I have only kept 3 of them , the first and the Flying pendulum and electromagnetic one.3 points

Hello all! I joined several years ago, but I got discouraged and stepped away from my SS. I've recently decided to give it another go and, for SOME reason, I seem to be able to actually follow the lines now...go figure! Anyway, just wanted to say hello and look forward to being part of the forum again!2 points -

I was going to suggest that @kmmcrafts Kevin just post a link to his Etsy page since he is the King of the Clocks (and ornaments) i believe I have made one clock since I started scrolling. Clearly not competing with Kevin. Was not even sure I had ever taken a picture of it, but looks like I did. I made it for a friend's daughter who graduated from law school. It is a Dirk Boelman pattern. It can be found here: https://theartfactory.com/product/scales-of-justice/ Edited to Add: Oops - looks like I made two I think I gave this one to my niece or nephew both who play the guitar.2 points

Clocks theme huh? Since I have made over 250 clocks which ones do I choose? Desk clocks are my favorite so I only put in one wall clock.. I have more of those too.. Hope someone here likes cars since the desk clocks is a bunch of cars. LOL Gotta say it was hard to choose which ones to post up.. I tried to do some Fords ( not a Ford person myself ) and Chevy's and now I see I left out Dodge.. which is one of my favorites.. what the heck.. Also left out a bunch of the imports.. oh well can't post them all.. but if you have a request to see something I probably have it if it has wheels.. Then I left out the entire sports line like hunting, golfing, running etc.. Oops, I forgot all the dog breeds... I gotta post one of those.. some make them as puzzles.. I make them as clocks... so see last photo Did I mention I've made over 250 clocks?2 points -

I made this one a couple of years ago. I bought the pattern and planned on making for my Mom for Mother's Day 2017. I didn't get around to making it for her so I thought that I would make it for her for Mother's Day 2018... I lost her a couple of weeks before Mother's Day. Shortly after she passed away I made it. It now sits in my entertainment center. The base is Leopard wood and the top part is Walnut.2 points -

Great to have you back. The 59 Impala takes me back many years. When I was in college my uncle was a salesman for a Chevrolet dealer. If I had a particular hot date, he would let me borrow a demo car. The best one was the 59 Impala; my date was impressed. Jerry1 point -
LOL. Pun intended??? LOL I don't do them as I have no use for them. I'll just sit back at look at everybody else's beautiful clocks. Sigh!1 point

Here is what I use for scroll saw projects: Shopsmith 6" Belt Sander - Useful for curved edges and flat surfaces that I want to remove material quickly. The best tool I have for sanding wheels to size. Delta 1" belt sander - It does a great job on outside edges and can be used for some inside curves. I also have the Shopsmith version, which does the same thing and lets me do inside sanding. Klingspor Sanding Mop - Expensive, but worth the cost. Removes most fuzzies and leaves a silky smooth surface. Klingspor Mac Mop - Similar to a sanding mop but a bit more aggressive. Ridgid Spindle Sander - Great for sanding inside curves as small as a 1/2 inch radius. It also has an oscillating belt sander. Random Orbital Sanders - I use these for sanding flat surfaces, such as prepping wood for the scroll saw and sanding puzzles. I have four sanders, one Hitachi, and three Bauer random orbit sanders. I have this many sanders, so I don't have to change the sandpaper for each grit. I have the Bauer sanders because the dut port is round. Quarter Sheet Palm Sander - I only have this because I have a huge stack of 80-grit sandpaper that fits this. I would not recommend buying one. Grizzly Flex Shaft Rotary Tool - I use this with an assortment of drum and flap sanders for sanding inside curves. You can do this with a held rotary tool like a Dremel, but this is lots better. If it ever dies, I will probably buy a Foredom. I have other sanding tools that don't get use for scroll saw projects, yet. These are only the power sanding tools. At some point, you will need to resort to hand sanding.1 point

Kevin, I have both of the units you show. I take the backer off the 1" belt sander so that there are no "hard" angles to it. I also use a lot of wooden dowls of different diameters with sand paper either loosely rolled up or glued to them. I have a Dremel multi-tool that I originally bought for the cutter blade aspect. I wanted to cut some wall panelling in our bathroom to install a medicine cabinet. I did find later that the sanding part was pretty useful and I found a place on Amazon that sold the precut paper with velcro backing at a bulk price. As mentioned above though, you have to give your hand a break every once in a while to let it recover. Because of where the air vents are on the tool you can't hold it where it would be most comfortable. That's my only complaint.1 point

My wife & I will celebrate our 45th anniversary this June. She rarely sets foot in my basement shop. I'd be afraid that if she hung out with me, she would start putting stuff away and cleaning up.1 point -
