Well as promised here are some of my wooden models, I,m gonna have to do some touchup on the AWACS Plane, the black stripe needs some looking too. Can't really afford plastic models nowadays, Have you seen the price of those things?. Far higher than when I was a boy, so I decided to make my own. Some I will sell, some I will keep. I am working on some newer jets, and planing on getting out my old Star Trek Model Instructions and see what I can do with The Voyager and The Defiant.7 points

I'm back.....Slowly
Kris Martinson and 2 others reacted to munzieb for a topic
I had my back fusion surgery (L4-L5) 12/13 but have not been scolling since late November. This is my first attempt since then. I scoll standing so I can't do it for too long before I have to take a break. I have a neighbor that is always talking about the '59 Chevy Impala his dad used to have so I thought I would surprise him. The funny thing about the 59 is that both the front and back are interesting with the big grill in the front and the wide "V" shape in the back. I did the front with elements of the V back also. If he likes it the other way, the back is actually easier to cut and I'll do that too. My wife greyscaled a picture I found and added some bridges. Frame is 16 x11 on BBW with shellac and gloss lacquer. I'll update once I get it to him.3 points -
No, if I had space, I would have three of each belt sander, that would be six belt sanders, so I would not need to change belts unless I wore out the belt. There are disc sanders, flat and conical these all are used on my Shopsmith. I would like to have a belt-fed drum sander and a sand flea. I make toys of all sorts and do a lot of sanding. Having the right tool for the job makes everything easier.3 points

Trouble with lighting and a 'strobe light' effect when sawing
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to rash_powder for a topic
I have an Ottlite, not sure if it is LED or not though. I would like an LED one as the light seems to be brighter and more directed; at least to me anyway. If you watch the sale ads JoAnne Fabrics every now and again will have Ottlite marked down 50% off. Sometimes there is a coupon in the app. Sometimes it all stacks. Thats how I got mine.2 points -
I had the same thought. In most cases, I only sand the edges of my scroll project to correct defects or to make wheels perfectly round. for example. In some woods, the edges are so smooth they are glossy.2 points

This is the Ottlite I have for my scroll saw. I have no issues with strobing. It has a strong, white light and the magnifier works well for me. These are not inexpensive, but might be worth the price. This one lists for $149.99 but they are offering a $40 discount. I bought mine through JoAnns and my wife had a 40% off coupon. I agree with Scott.. Might be a blade issue because I think most of us rarely have to sand the edges.. On a side note: I've learned a lot from this topic.. I've seen those multi tools but never really looked into them, I didn't even know they could be used as a sander.. honestly didn't know what they was for, LOL and figured I had a Dremel that was pretty versatile and did basically the same stuff but now I know I'm wrong. I'm going to have to look and see what all they are used for.2 points

Same here, I use the mop for every project. I make more toys than anything, but I also like to make fretwork, ornaments, and puzzles. The sanding mop is helpful for all of these. The sanding tools you need depend on what you make and just how picky you are. There is no magic one size fits all sanding tool.2 points

Here is where I got my current shop lights. https://www.omniraylighting.com/ I wanted link-able surface mount lights and the Harbor Freight lights did not fit the bill. As it turned out these were exactly what I wanted and they were cheaper than Harbor Freight. They are the easiest light fixture you will ever install.2 points

Clocks Scroll Saw Challenge
clocks and more and one other reacted to john nelson for a topic
Of all the scroll saw projects I have designed throughout the years, clocks were always my favorite subject. I especially like them because they are "alive" and they serve a function. By the response to "CLOCKS" this month, it is a very popular subject. My very first and favorite was the original 1880, NORMANDY model from Italy. . Here are a few of my favorite clock designs. (The grandfather clock below is over 6 feet tall and designed to be made with a 16" scroll saw.... )2 points -

Some really nice clocks posted. I really like the Dragon designs whose patterns are they? I have just finished two more clocks as a test cutter for SSWWC magazine (no pictures yet). It was a bit of an eye opener seeing the prices on the larger inserts. 4-1/2" I have made many clocks, three of them actual gear clocks. My first one was just after joining our local club it is about 10" tall. The rest have all been cuts for the magazine. I have only kept 3 of them , the first and the Flying pendulum and electromagnetic one.2 points

Great idea about hanging them from a chain.....Plus, I did a google search about the harmful effects of Halogen lights and they emit UV rays so I could actually get sunburned...so that is out. I hope to go to HF tomorrow...if we don't get snowed in....Crazy March Thanks again! Marie1 point

I would love to have more light. The problem I have is the roof in 'my' shop is over 12 feet high. It is actually my husbands Orchard equipment building and I use a small piece of it (however I am slowly making gains in space, I don't think he has noticed...yet ) Anyway, I transgress...So the lights are way up there and my little lamp by my saw is casting shadows. You have given me an idea though...we have extra giant Hallogen lights we use in one of our Greenhouses (the whole thing weighs about 40 pounds), Perhaps I could hang one of those above me. The added benefit is they also give off quite a bit of heat so I would be warmer as well.... I think, though, I still could use a lighted magnifier.1 point

Paul, what brand is your LED one? I would like a bright one. Fluorescent lighting can give me a headache after a while. I am still trying to figure out how bright Denny's is....but no luck...I will keep looking online.1 point

I'm not much for holding onto sanders myself, I'd much rather have a stationary tool and I hold the wood being sanded.. I use the ridgid belt / spindle sander and also sanders that mount in my drill press. https://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-Oscillating-Edge-Belt-Spindle-Sander-EB4424/202459151?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&&mtc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25T-025_009_PORT_POWER-NA-Multi-NA-SMART-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-PortablePower_SmartShopping&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-BF-CDP-GGL-D25T-025_009_PORT_POWER-NA-Multi-NA-SMART-NA-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NA-PortablePower_SmartShopping-71700000106625794-58700008274559054-92700075196193279&gclid=Cj0KCQiAgaGgBhC8ARIsAAAyLfGIv2s7IzSO4cBB4pJyov6gkbhjl5SEBzvcQhelb_FHGbwc-xf0qr4aArYMEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds WEN and Harbor Freight also have their version of the same type of sander.. I now use a mac mop or sanding mop thing. Harbor Freight used to sell what was called a sanding ball, but I don't see them anymore. basically a arbor with scotchbright pads stacked up on it.. worked great for edge sanding around the outside of a profile but wouldn't get into tight corners well. For tight corners I will sometimes cut thin strips of sandpaper and use spray glue the back of two strips then take a old scroll saw blade and sandwich the blade with those strips on each side.. mount in the saw and sand with the saw.. trust me if there is a way to avoid holding a power sander and or hand sanding I'll find a way, LOL I've always wanted one of these.. I've heard many people on these forums say they use theirs all the time and I think I could use one quite a lot too. https://www.harborfreight.com/1-in-x-30-in-belt-sander-61728.html1 point

I've had both types, but mine was a B&D Mouse sander, which I gave to one of the kids, years ago, and haven't seen it since - and haven't missed it. I have a Dewalt cordless multi-tool, which is great for detail or corner sanding, and you can switch to a blade for trim cutting (wood and thin metal), or a scraper blade for removing layers, or a half-moon blade for removing grout. Note - they all vibrate so take breaks to let the hand muscles settle every now & then. Corded tools are normally lighter than portable, because of no battery weight, but, then you are limited by cord length. TLDR: Go for the multi-tool.1 point

They come with a steel circle with 3M adhesive on the back, so you can mount them to plastic or aluminum if you like.1 point

I have this one; I occasionally use it for sanding, but I don't find it all that ergonomically friendly to use for extended periods of time. My suggestion is try to figure out why you have to do so much edge and corner sanding. With practice and the right blade, edges can be smooth, right off the saw and need no sanding.1 point

Do you know how many lumins your LED one puts out? Is the flourescent one brighter? Thanks1 point
-
I like those as well because you have light coming from both sides. I do like the idea of a magnifier though. Tough decisions. Since I do upholstery I think I will look into these since I could use them on my sewing machines (which could use more light) if they don't work out for my saw. I like that they are magnetic as well. Thank you!1 point
-
I also have an Ottlite and am pleased with it. The LED lights put out a strong, white light and the magnifying lens is just right for me at my scroll saw. I sometimes move it around the shop to my drill press and other machines.1 point

Welcome back from The People's Republic of California. I look forward to seeing what you like to make. Pics are a must though or we won't believe you. Do you have anything you specialize in or are you still in the deciding phase. Me, I'm not into wall hangers. I like boxes, bowls and baskets. Things that have a purpose other than collecting dust. But to each his own. Please do keep us updated on your journey.1 point
