    MIA

As the title says I've been MIA for awhile due to health issues and unable to saw for a few months. Being on light duty wasn't so bad as I got to play with my other hobby as a radio amateur even got a new radio or two lol. As I was away from the saw for so long I forgot a lot that I had learned and took awhile to get back into it and really I'm not back up to where I was even after a couple of weeks. Here's some stuff I've cut since I've got back at it, not sanded or finished yet and lots of mistakes as usual, but I'm told if I don't make them I'm not learning . Good to be back and thanks for looking

  2. Just for those who aren't familiar with Artcraftersonline.com, I placed an order with Denny Knappen on Saturday the 11th for some Pegas blades and a package of micro drill bits. He processed it and shot me an email to tell me that it would ship out Monday the 13th. Today, the 15th, it arrived. Tennessee to California in 2 days. You can't beat that for service. Both by Denny and the USPS. Hats off to both. Thanks Denny.

  3. The past few weeks I've been tinkering with carving and wood burning. I was looking for a way to enhance a few walking sticks and canes I'm working on. I've seen tons of both which carvers and burners turn out some incredible projects. So, after many, many failed attempts at both, I've come to the conclusion that I'm am, and always will be a Scroller! After some thinking time I believe I've figured out out how to get pretty close to the carved and burned detail on the sticks and canes with my scrollsaw. It's said that confession is good for the soul, with that in mind let me say; My name is Chris, and I'm a Scroller! Now, back to your regular scheduled show.....

    Bass Puzzle

The Bass Puzzle is finished. The pattern by Harvey Blyer. I enlarged the pattern to fit 3/4" Poplar 8" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3 MGT blades and #5 MGT blades for the veining. Sanded with a Mac Mop, dipped in diluted Shellac, and again a light sanding. Comments welcome.

  5. Looking around in the pirate area on-line I came across this Royalty Free cartoon character image that caught my eye and though it would be a good addition to my collection of cartoon cuttings. It took quite a bit of work to convert it into a scrollable 11 x 14 pattern. The cut panel is 5/32” thk. Birch Solid Core Ply affixed to a ¼” thk BB Ply painted black backer. Cutting was done with Pegas #2/0 spiral blades. Mainly large cut outs but a lot of narrow spaced parallel lines and some very small detail areas. The coloring was done with Artist Acrylics and the finish panel protected with multiple coats of spray Polycrylic. The frame is 1 ¾” wide Pine, primed and painted. Comments and critiques always welcome.

Pilot holes drilled with #68 HSS twist drill bits. Sanded with a Mac Mop and finished with two coats spray Lacquer Clear Gloss. Comments welcome.

  8. I just finished cutting this wood-art piece. This one took about 18 hours to cut and another 2 hours to make the pattern. I made it from a painting by artist, Ted Blaylock.

    I'm a scroller

I am a woodworker first. I have built cabinets, furniture and even a Maloof rocker. But, father time has caused a change with arthritis and difficult back issues and so I have been changing. It started with the scroll saw and love my Hegner. I have made many puzzles for Grandkids, Christmas ornaments, and Intarsia. All I can do sitting down. Well the shaping and such on Intarsia has led me to power carving and more detailed Intarsia. I have made canes, small animals, and dinosaurs. Again, all, I can do sitting down. I have modified my shop to let me sit and do this as well as great dust collection as I work. I tried wood burning but the smoke even with fans and dust collection was too much. This all has been an evolution over time to meet my physical and mental needs. I just love making things from wood no matter how I do it.

    I'm a scroller

Funny you bring this up.. I get friends and family that know I work with wood ( note I didn't say a woodworker ) and they always asking if I can make a kitchen table or a dresser or some other oddball thing.. While I work with wood as in creating scrolled art? The term "art" is loosely used here but I definitely have no idea how to make a table, bench or cabinet and those types of things.. Mostly only use a scroll saw to do my creations and many times don't even know how to use that on some of the oddball request I get. LOL

  13. Here is a clock I did for my Lady's young Grandson. He was actually having difficulty using a clock with hands to tell time because of growing up with all digital clocks. Thought this would help and give him a chance to learn about Chinese numbers at the same time (note the simlilariity to Roman Numerals). He also like dragons.

They look excellent Colin. The first 3 would maybe look even better with some epoxy resin added to them, just a thought. BTW welcome back, hope the health problems are a thing of the past for you. Marg

  22. I would like to add my experience with Denny. I have a Pegas scroll saw. Recently I had to replace the tension lever. The owner's manual showed having to remove the chuck, but the picture showed a different chuck, not the Pegas chuck. Well, not being mechanically inclined I shot a message to Denny. It didn't take long for Denny to respond. Was able to remove the tension lever and install a new one, all without removing the chuck. Seems to me Pegas would want to update their manual. Oh, by the way I did order the tension lever from Denny along with some other stuff. Jerry

  24. Yep we are very fortunate to have some great vendor members here. I have had super service from Denny, and also from Kevskrafts. Ordered some clock inserts in the AM, in the mail same day. He also includes a new battery incase the one that came in the insert is old.

    I'm a scroller

I’d really like to see your work. I’ve made a bunch of canes and walking sticks but have never tried carving or scrolling on them. I have seen pictures. I’ve used Osage orange ( hedge apple ), it’s very hard wood, and contorted hazelnut. I mainly did them to take with us when we go hiking and made a few for a friend that needed one.

  32. How funny. I was just going to make a post about this. I had the same story. I places an order Sunday of 3 different size blades and 3 dozen each and received my package today. I was super impressed with the packaging. All blades attached to a cardboard backer in their own row, all nice and organized. @Denny KnappenFor someone like me, things like that really matter!!!

  33. Denny has great service and great prices. I just ordered a new tension lever and some extra springs for my Pegas blade holders. Should be here soon. Denny is also very good at emailing back if you have questions, even dumb ones like I did. Next time I will wear my glasses and check things out a bit more. Enough said.

    I'm a scroller

I am a scroller mainly but I am also a woodburner. My husband on the other hand is a woodworker. I can show him a picture or describe what I want and he can create it. He amazes me with his self taught ability. This is why I make sure he has all the tools he needs. However when it comes to scrolling he hands it off to me. We make a good team. Plus any repairs needed around the house he does. If he is not sure he will go to You Tube and find a video to show him what he needs to know. I am very blessed.

  37. You have not seen me with glasses Paul but I am supposed to wear them. Actually I have the magnifying Lense right there on the saw. I just didn't look close enough, hence I should wear glasses. I have gotten hearing aids since I last saw you. Can't hardly hear a thing without them. take them off when I go to the shop though. Going to the specialist means more money. got mine at Costco, pretty happy with them.

  39. @scrollingforsanity I don't remember you with glasses. I am at the point of adding hearing aids. but one ear was so bad, they want me to go to an ear specialist before they recommend hearing aids. Not sure what that means.

  40. I had to have an Ablation on my heart, where they cauterize parts of it. I have only been in the shop a little because of some afterwards chest pain and groin discomfort. I decided on one harder project, the bowl (alder and oak) and 2 easy bird houses. They all turned out pretty well. If anyone wants a copy of my bowl pattern, let me know.

  43. That is a triple WOW from me, first to make the pattern and then to go even better is to cut it. This is piece of art.

  44. Just completed this beautiful Russ Beard pattern, it took me longer than it should have done the reason being the whole year so far we have had a maximum of four hours of power during the day so a lot has to be done when you do have power and scroll saw work has to put on the back bench. The power has improved slightly so I managed to finish it. We also had extensive flooding so the moisture content in the wood is high and played silly buggers with me in the finishing especially the Leopard. The tree I purposely textured it to give a bit of an aging effect. All in all I’m happy with the cut, I enjoy these complex cuts. Just as a matter of interest this was cut cut on the cheapest scroll saw like your Wen. I would have to think a bit about the frame thinking about a rustic frame to suit the picture as well as the back round behind the Leopard I think a nice blue representing a nice clear day under the African skies.
